Is Cell a more popular character in the West than in Japan?

I’m not sure if it’s like this for anyone else, but I remember the Cell Saga as being the pinnacle of DBZ’s popularity in the U.S.

It seemed like that was when I started to overhear people in school talking about DBZ all the time. It definitely continued through the Buu saga, but it just seemed like Cell was when it really started to pick up.
You shouldn’t have to (Cell.) your soul!

It's hard to tell without some kind of a poll but Vegeta, Freeza and Majin Boo seem to be fan-favorite villains in the West (Europe/Americas/Ocean Pacific). Cell isn't really popular in Japan and possibly why it never got his own DBZ movie.

Although, it's the Cell arc that has easily one of the best scenes in all of Z/Kai – Super Saiyan 2 Son Gohan's Awakening.

Eh I think that is one of the most overrated scenes in the franchise tried to copy Goku's and failed to have any of the weight, #16 dies and all of a sudden we are supposed to believe he had a deep bond with Gohan. At least with Goku's his best friend died and at that moment there was no way of him getting back alive.

Cell is the only major DB character with a bigger fanbase in the West than in Japan. That should say something.

You know, the contrarians who think DB should be a Slice-of-Life series, the folks who worship Pre-Raditz Dragonball uncritically, the folks who downplay and often flat-out deny that Dragonball is an action series, the folks who try to push that false argument that none of the serious moments in the series were mean't to be taken seriously, etc.

Dragonball doesn't have a single tone. It has both silly and serious moments, both humor and drama, just like real life. The idea that a work of fiction should be only all-comedy or all-serious is unnatural and frankly, retarded.

It's not about them having a "deep bond". Cell was going to kill his friends and family, and he was holding back because he didn't want to kill Cell. After seeing someone die right in front of him, along with 16's speech about fighting and protecting the animals for him, that was just too much and he snapped.
