Audio Quality on Japanese releases vs. Funimation

Post by DrBriefsCat » Wed Jun 17, 2020 5:51 pm

Does the audio quality on the Japanese VHS tapes of the movies have better fidelity than the Japanese-language tracks on Funimation's Bluray/DVD releases?
I happen to have a few original Toei-released tapes from the late-80's/90's and was wondering if they were mastered from something higher-grade than optical film, similar to the original TV broadcasts.

Optical Soundtrack (low quality):

Japanese VHS release ... DB 1-3, DBZ 1-3
Japanese VHS re-release ... DB 1-3
Funimation's DVD/Blu-ray releases ... DB 1-3, DBZ 1-13, The Path to Power

Magnetic Tape (high quality):

Japanese VHS release ... DBZ 4-13
Japanese VHS re-release ... DBZ 1-3
Japanese Laser Disc release ... DBZ 1-13
Japanese Blu-ray release ... DB 1-3, DBZ 1-13, The Path to Power

You forgot that the original Funimation DVD single release of DBZ movie 13, and Path To Power, used the high-quality magnetic tape audio.
Similarly, all Funi releases of the GT TV special use magnetic tape audio too.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

I think it's optical Dolby Stereo audio mistakenly mixed to mono. These movies sound better than the others, but it's still optical soundtrack.

Oh, I see. Interesting.

Thanks. I guess I should hang on to my Z tapes.
