Goku-sa!
Alright.
So Chichi calls Goku "Goku-sa" constantly. Is it just a dialect difference in the pronunciation of the "-san" honorific, or is it a completely different and obscure honorific for backwards hicks?
This question feels stupid, for some reason.

Is it for sure? I thought that was Chichi's term of affection unique to herself. In other words, she intentionally doesn't pronounce the N.Bussani wrote:Yep.B wrote:I'm fairly certain she's mispronouncing "san" due to a hick accent.
Edit: Sorry that this was a short reply, but there's no much else to say other than B is right, as far as I know.

Nope, she is just a hick. Not to seem like blind follower of the podcast, but they concluded with the same notion.Dayspring wrote:Is it for sure? I thought that was Chichi's term of affection unique to herself. In other words, she intentionally doesn't pronounce the N.

Just a little something I noticed but, with maybe one exception, Chichi only omits the "n" for Gokuh as it's written in the manga. With everyone else she clearly says the full "san." The two different terms are used too closely together and too often for me to think that they're simply typos or that Toriyama forgot how Chichi speaks, so I think of it as a term of endearment specifically for Gokuh. It could also be because she tries to be more polite and speak in a more standard way to individuals outside her family.

This is just me, but I always saw it as her equivalent of "darling" or "snookums". Her own little "pet name", as it were, for Goku.

I could see that. Chi-Chi treats Goku differently from everyone else in terms of politeness or agitation.Saiyavenger2941 wrote:This is just me, but I always saw it as her equivalent of "darling" or "snookums". Her own little "pet name", as it were, for Goku.

Well, it's been a few years but when I took a course in college on women in various cultures, one of my professors mentioned that using "-sa" was used only between a woman to her husband but was NOT used vice versa*shrugs* I don't know how much truth is in that because I haven't really listened to how other DBZ characters refer to their husband/wives in a while. But I suppose it is one theory.

No surprise coming from you.Rocketman wrote:It's adorable, is what it is.
I've noticed Chi-Chi also calls her son Gohan-Chan. Though Gohan is her son, he is the only one she adds chan to. Interesting I think; Goku gets the hick honorific and Gohan gets the proper honorific.

Well, she IS trying to properly educate Gohan to be a scholar, after all.Forgotten Hero wrote:No surprise coming from you.Rocketman wrote:It's adorable, is what it is.

Well, you notice her relationship with Goten is different than with Gohan. She trains with Goten, encourages him to fight and train. It's less "hyper-protective mother". Perhaps the change in honorific is part of that change in relationship?Dr. Casey wrote:I always did find it weird that she refers to Goten as Goten-san.

True that! Does she ever call her last son Goten-Chan? I don't recall the Buu arc too well.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:Well, she IS trying to properly educate Gohan to be a scholar, after all.Forgotten Hero wrote:No surprise coming from you.Rocketman wrote:It's adorable, is what it is.

I never pictured ChiChi as a hick, she is the daughter of a King, she's kind of like a princess then. She is a bit of a hick as she's always lived in the country not the city, I doubt her saying Goku sa is a reason for that though. I always found it nice when she says 'Gohan-yo' in the first episode, I can't think of her using 'yo' after anyone's name after that.
