Oolong means Black

Post by dragonpearls » Sat Apr 23, 2005 3:09 pm

I just learn in my Cantonese class that “Oolong” means Black.

I was wondering if Oolong’s name means Black in the show, being that the Chinese that they used was most likely in Mandarin.

I thought it was "Black Dragon".

Because of the "long" at the end?

And isn't it a tea as well?
Where's the beef?

It's a tea alright, written "烏龍". It means "black dragon", supposedly because the leaves look like waking black dragons when poured with hot water.
It's party time, Ginyu style!

Oolong is an actual kind of Chinese tea. Watch enough Chinese movies/shows, you'll hear it mentioned quite a bit.
Jerseymilk: "Can I tell you something?"
B-kun: "What?"
Jerseymilk: "I see Fangirls."

Yes, interestingly, Toriyama got a question involving Oolong tea from a fan.
Q: Just so you know I really like Oolong tea and Pu'ar tea. By the way, on pg. 18 of volume 1, Son Goku says to Bulma, "I never saw another human before!" Wasn't Goku's "grandpa" (the guy who raised him) another human?

A: W-Well...if you put it that way...yes. Oops...I made a mistake. Sorry, I apologize. You're also very smart to realize that I got the name "Pu'ar" from the name of the Chinese tea.
Granted, it doesn't actually say where he got the name "Oolong" but it's kind of implied it was from the tea.

Is that an actual written answer or a spoken answer written down? Because why would someone write stuttering and being al clumsy?

The quote is from "Akira Toriyama's 'ask me anything' corner" in volume 4 of the manga (Viz translation).

Yah, in my class they said that if you want Black Tea, you say "Oolong (black) Cha (tea)".

I always thought that quote was referring to Son Goku's not seeing another human besides his grandpa. But anywho...

Yes, black, dragon, tea. Mmm...
