Buu = Kirby?!
I apologize if a topic was already created like this...
I was watching through the Buu saga - and the scene where Mr. Satan gives Buu the Game Poy, an idea rushed through my head... who's based off of who???
The similarities are WAY too close to be coincidental. Don't you think? Big, fat, blobby, seemingly "cute" pink guys, who fly around and suck up candy.
Kirby's Dreamland was released in 1992. Which possibly means it was in development in 1991. When was the DB manga featuring Buu released? Does anyone know? All I could find was that the Buu saga was aired in Japan in 94... so the time frame is really similar. Also - Masahiro Sakurai, the creator of Kirby, was 19 when the game was developed - so, I find it really hard for him not to have NOT been a reader/watcher of DBZ at the time... But yeah that's just another theory that I don't have an answer to.
I'm probably just grasping at straws, (I tend to do that sometimes) but I just thought I'd mention it, see what you kindly DBZ fans thought of my theory...am I crazy or what?

I've noticed the similarities, but neither is probably based on the other.

I believe Super Sonic is referring to the manga, since in the Viz volumes, at the beginning of the title page gallery, there is always "These title pages appeared when Dragon Ball was serialized from 1984 to 1995 in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. At the beginning of the Buu arc, it states that it was from '93. The anime version was first aired in 1994, I think... Yeah... mabye...Infinity's End wrote:Super Sonic, are you referring to the manga or the anime?

Well, the general Buu arc started in late '93, and even then you'd have to consider how long Toriyama had been thinking of Buu. No-one gets to prove the Tori-bot wrong, biznitches!GokuSoul wrote:From Daizenshuu Manga Reference Volume 39:

Well that can be true but seeing as how Toriyama stated in Dr. Slump Volume 3 that I will scan later if you don't belive me he says that he comes up with the story as he draws...so you don't really know.The Tori-bot wrote:Well, the general Buu arc started in late '93, and even then you'd have to consider how long Toriyama had been thinking of Buu. You're not on a first-name basis on Dragon Ball's mangaka, dude.Steven Perry wrote:Ahhh.... I see. Akira could've had Buu in his scrap book for quite some time.
In any case, as much as I don't believe in coincedences, I don't see enough evidence connecting Kirby and Boo.

I always just assumed Mr. Satan gave Buu a Game Poy because Toriyama played video games with his children a lot while they were growing up. I think he still loves video games, and isn't he still working on some, such as the Dragon Quest series?
What's scarier than a DBZ H-game?

Yeah, I would say that the 'Game Poy' was just a funny little throwback to Toriyama-sensei's video gaming career.
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.
