Things that made more sense in Funi's dub than Japanese
Things that made more sense in Funi's dub than Japanese
I know you guys hate Funi's dub but let's say some good things about it
Well one thing I noticed is during Gohan vs Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga. When Gohan first does the Maskenko, in the Japanese version, he says Kamehameha. In the English version he says Masenko correctly. Anything else??

I don't hate their dub.

We don't "hate" it per say. It's also important to clarify which dub we're talking about. The general consensus is as follows. Kai dub and onward? Great. Ocean dub of the first three movies? Great. Dubs of the three TV series? Mixed bag, leaning towards bad. Dubs of the other DBZ movies? Again, mixed bag, leaning towards bad.s841 wrote:I know you guys hate Funi's dub but let's say some good things about itWell one thing I noticed is during Gohan vs Vegeta during the Saiyan Saga. In any event, I do agree, that correction you noted was appreciated. If we're talking about the DBZ dub though, I can't think of any moment that was better in the dub. A few here and there that were on par with with the original Japanese version, but none that surpassed it.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

The only thing I can remember is the explanation for Cell's regeneration. Funi made an effort to explain how his head could be blown off, yet he could still regenerate. Neither the manga or the original anime did this.

If anything, this one. The original script makes this one the biggest plothole.Kamiccolo9 wrote:The only thing I can remember is the explanation for Cell's regeneration. A world without Dragon Ball is just boring.

And then the dub's line goes on to make another plot hole. Why couldn't they just change the line to "Inside of me, a small nucleus exists. As long as it survives I can keep regenerating."?

Only the rewriting of how Cell revived after blowing himself up was the only thing that made more sense in the FUNi dub than in the original JPN version, as far as I know.

The musical score of Faulconer. It fits infinitely better than Kikuchi's music ever did for Z.
Re: Things that made more sense in Funi's dub than Japanese
Did FUNI change the dub line where Dr. Brief says Goku's spaceship was destroyed? (since Piccolo blew it up in filler when Gohan was transformed?)
In the dub Dr. Brief says it was mostly destroyed and Goku said he was surprised and wondered if he smashed it as a kid. I remember people saying TOEI created this plothole when they had Piccolo destroy Goku's ship, so did the FUNI dub add the line that Dr. Brief salvaged what he could?

How can a replacement fit better than the original? I never understood the "it fits better" claim. Like what about that ost makes it seem more Dragon Ball than Kikuchi? The techno synths?SpiritBombTriumphant wrote:The musical score of Faulconer. It fits infinitely better than Kikuchi's music ever did for Z.

Re: Things that made more sense in Funi's dub than Japanese
Especially when you consider the fact that the material comprising DBZ episode 1 picks up directly after the end of Dragon Ball. It literally started the week after in Japan. Everyone still has their 23rd Budokai/semi-rounded style going on. The music, animation, and voices all remained the same. You're just continuing a new chapter of the same story. The only thing that really changed was the intro to HEAD-CHA-LA. If it wasn't for the "Z", you wouldn't even notice the break.
At least GT has a pretty good excuse of it's tonal/musical change in direction: Toriyama was not significantly involved and Toei wanted a drastic change in the presentation.

Nothing matters (in a cosmic sense.) Have a good time.

Re: Things that made more sense in Funi's dub than Japanese
OK, you know what, a thought just occured to me....
First off, let me preface this by saying that FUNimation should not have done this. They should have created a loyal dub, which is not what they did in this case. Having said that, I kind of like what they did with this scene. In the original, Freeza just laughs, but in the dub, Freeza talks in his "native language."
Part of me can't believe I just typed that, but on the other hand, what the utter f-word was up with that animation? That's the weirdest-looking laugh I've ever seen, like he had a seizure while he was laughing. I wouldn't be surprised if this was the exact reason the line was changed, because Freeza speaking in his native language strikes me as a more logical explanation for his body motion in that scene. So, that's appreciated......I guess....kinda....vaguely...not really.
