Is Naruto at DBZ's level of popularity in the past?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Deeper plot? It's not deep at all. A lot, if not all, of Naruto is predictable.

Naruto is a crappier version of DBZ except with highschool teen angst thrown in.

The first time i saw Naruto, it was its debut in Shonen Jump. I loved the first episode, but lately it semms a little boring. A demon, a swat team, a pedifile, a town, it all just dosnt really phase people. Especially the ninja part. Noone cares.( Hahahaha...)

Due to a) my incompatible schedule and b) my inability to read subtitles, I've only seen two episodes of Naruto, and became casually interested... though mainly because of the first scene I saw rather than anything else.

This makes me think of the VAA, actually... where undoubtedly the biggest Shounen anime being dubbed to death is Naruto, or at least the last time I checked it was...

And all the talk suggests that in America Naruto gives hyperactive action fans something to worship... which scares me... *remembers sparring with 7YO cousin sometime between New Years Eve and Newyears morning... thinks it was before midnight since went to bed after playing the SSJ3 theme...* *remembers all of the Naruto references he made... mostly to himself...*.

My father... turns 40 next month. Into both Dragonball and Naruto, having seen only the dubs and the japanese version of dbz movie13... and dislikes Onepiece greatly, once again based on the dub. He points out that Naruto involves a lot of similarities to DBZ... and has said that it is "the new DBZ". But at the same time, I think he notices the difference in pace and ... umm... stuff. The hyperactivity, I guess, Vs the ... umm... ok, I don't know enough about Naruto to say much else on the topic. ^^. But I recall once when the same cousin mentioned before does crazy gymnastic moves during non-action scenes, father saying something about Naruto and flipping around all over the place and story development...

... So basically I made a pointless post. ^^. I think Naruto isn't likely to outdo DB in total, because it seems to be a cult thing ... a social thing, if you will. People see it and think it's cool--what do you know, so do their friends. Not only that, but there is an anime community in America that isn't in the closet any more... wow! So they assert themselves by obsessing and doing all sorts of ninja dub stuff... even though Ninjas are about not being noticed... *thinks of a character design for an idea from ... I don't remember when, and how it probably resembles Naruto way too much... is sad by this...*.

You know what? I think that entire series just got screwed. Ok, just now I've decided... just for that... I can't like Naruto. It makes me look less original than I already wasn't...

The thing is that Naruto isn't really original... at all. I can't find really anything that I would praise it for. The guy who used bones as weapons was the only thing that I found slightly interested. I really gave it a chance to see what everyone was pissing their pants over. The characters are too cliche, dull and even rip-offs. The plot literally made me stab myself when I tried thinking about it. Development.... I don't even want to go there... I need to be liquored up for that bullshit. I might find it interesting if I didn't see every fricking little thing before in other series.

Seriously when I heard the word development in anything about Naruto in a few posts ago. I cracked up. Nothing has been achieved. This ultimate secret move Naruto learned in chapter 1 is fucking useless (except for chapter 1). Things are repetitive. Naruto's main move is even a fricking rip-off another ninja series where the guy controlled wind. I can't grasp what is original or what the hell has been developed. I could never give two shits about the characters in it either. What is to be liked about em? Seriously, what the fuck am I not seeing?

Oh, and I heard of Black Cat. Again, I find that series very dull.

I tend to agree. I may be some kind of horrible unfeeling robot, but this whole "development" (50 flashbacks and closeups per episode) is just not for me. I prefer plot driven anime and in Naruto, not much has happened and very little of it has been original. I liked the start of Naruto and how there was a much larger focus on what it meant to be a ninja and the character's individual thoughts on that, but after a while it just became everyone and their tragic past (or how none of the other kids liked them when they were little, ohhhh!) and I just couldn't put up with it. It did have potential though.

I definitely agree with that. That is why I gave it such a big try. I WANTED it to be good. The missions and everything, the Zabuza arc, etc... I miss those.

So for all those who read my posts in this thread... It isn't like I always hated it. Not like I was always negative and never gave it a chance.

For those who read my posts and try to get a laugh or two, I try.... I really do try.

Not here at least, it seemed to suddenly grow after DBZ was off the air. Before roughly 98 or so, Anime was still in the "cult" status. Now the general population seems to have some idea of what it is.

EvilGamerX, I dont understand you, or One Piece fans in general. OP fans seem to even hate that Naruto exists. While the fact of the matter is, OP is more childish than Naruto.

The "bone guy" is Kimimaro. He reminds me of Marrow from the X-Men quite a bit...

I think One Piece has a more childish appearance than Naruto, but bears more than what meets the eye. Other than that, I pretty much like all the series' like Kaboom.

I like the characters of One Piece and developement. Also the way the story is told and how clever the chapter titles "The ___ person" are presented. "The First person" when Zoro joined, then we saw "The Fourth person when Sanji joined", the "The Second person" once Nami joined after Arlong Park, etc. You know who he has things planned for. Definately the way the story is told. Hell, I know people who actually learned lessons in life through the manga, and or how to deal with life. Sure they both are kid stories. Though to be honest, if you look deeply... past the jokes, past the sillyness, the story can be deep... even to a heartless bastard like me. I know during my depression, reading the manga just made me feel something.. like relaxed or something.. but that is ANOTHER story. Even Kishimoto said he told Oda that chapter 430 (only what chapter to prevent spoilers) made him cry at Jump Festa.

Maybe you just read Viz's crappy translation, or the anime... in general even. I don't know if the OP anime even qualifies for my top 5 anime.... but the original manga sure has hell tops everything with the way it is told.
Stupid in general when a series is judged on something other than it's original form due to things being cut or dragged on.

One Piece is truly a romance.

Sorry the jokes didn't come in this post. Once Naruto gets talked about as something serious... they will come again.

And dammit Payne! I thought Kishimoto was being original for once and it was cool! Damn you for proving me wrong!

If you want to see One Piece's storytelling greatness at its best, then hit Oo-yay-Ube-tay and watch the original japanese of the "Drum Island" arc (Episodes 78 - 91). Watch it through; you won't be dissapointed. If I was tearing up at the end, then you know it's a touchy ending.

Hahaha, you'll never catch me up here!
Anyways, yeah, I thought Kimimaro was cool until I realized, "Woah, hold on a second. He has an uncanny resemblance to Marrow in my Marvel VS Capcom 2 game..." and thus, I put 2 and 2 together. I think Kishimoto-Sensei has become more original starting the manga's 2ed arc.

Chi, Chicago is too far... Oh and Payne, the whole dummy battle with Sakura in part two made me punch the wall in disgust of all the crappy plot twists that were predictable and stupid as hell.

Kaboom: I still loved the manga more for that, and it was beautifully done. Though that is an example in the anime of one of the times where anime did it right.

I always hated the idiots with the headbands. This is kinda a reply to Last Son of Krypton.

Anyways, to prove you wrong about merchandise meaning shit. I am a HUGE fan of One Piece. Do I wear a straw-hat? No. Do I wear anything from the show? No. Why? Because I can acknowledge... key word.... the fact that I would look like a total dumbass... which is what I would look like. I can only gather that the Naruto series sends a signal too their brainwaves and makes a fan boy go "OOH! ANIME!" and pisses themself, thus ending up conforming to dressing up as a wannabe fake ninja. They all look gaytarded. If looking gaytarded means popular... then I will give Naruto applause in that area.
I hope you don't mean Dragonball Merchandice. Rumor has it there is a certain Admin. walking around in a DBZ scouter...
And whoever put that Shippuu-den trailer up, thank you!

SSj Kaboom, I'm right there with ya' a fan of all 3 series and bleach.(I haven't really gotten into Bleach and OP because I need to find the time...and watching through 300 eps. of OP will take awhile...a long while... )

I understand that people hate the anime and/or manga, but you don't have to insult the fans.(Unless they only know dub  ) I love the japanses Naruto manga/anime(I hate the fillers!), but I'm not a total loser(not a TOTAL loser! 8) )

Naruto is the same as any other series. Some like it, some don't. No matter if you've seen it or not. I have friends who like anime and absolutely hate the Dragonball series. Same with OP and Bleach. It just happens to be that more people seem to like it than hate it, and those who hate it don't get it.(Not that they are stupid, they just don't see what the fans see.)

But I really don't advice bashing it until you at least watch the anime(Not filler! Eps.1-100, and Eps. 107-135)

I'll probably think of more to say soon. :D

I'm greatly enjoying the episodes as they come out, although I've heard the series declines a bit as things go down the road (disregarding the fillers, talking about source material here). I dunno, like with many things, I enjoy it for what it is. In my opinion the dub is well handled (even on Cartoon Network actually o_O;) I relate to many of the characters, and really get a kick out of the fight scenes.

I think I like One Piece a LITTLE more than I like Naruto, but I very much enjoy both. With One Piece, I don't always see as much develoupment with the characters as I do with other series, including Naruto (again, just in MY opinion), but that doesn't necassarily mean I think the Strawhats aren't incredibly 3 dimensional.

Haha, hey, I said more original. Not completely original. I know, but Kishimoto-Sensei is trying his best.
