These threads make me uncomfortable, because I don't like perpetuating the idea amongst our fanbase that we do things "better" than the original. We just have fun with the series in our own way.

Well the editing is phenomenal. Even actual scenes are redrawn. That's love, and beyond anything else anyone else is doing.
Re: Parts TFS did better than actual anime?
I think it goes without saying, as it IS an "abridged" series - but the pacing is just so much better in the Abridged series at certain points.
For instance, the Namek arc is actually not nearly the gigantic, boring, tedious, painful drag to watch in the Abridged series that it is in the anime. Don't get me wrong, I love the story of the Namek arc, and it's got incredible moments in spades, but it being one of the biggest drags in the franchise isn't exactly a controversial opinion.

Re: Parts TFS did better than actual anime?
The only surefire scene I can think of is Kami and Piccolo, and it I think it circumvents the parody disclaimer because there was nothing in that relationship to send up, so creative liberty was required. Not only that, but the exchange went on about as long as I think Toriyama would have wrote it to, had he had those two spat. Again, that is not TFS "telling the story better", that's TFS finding a small, but very old pothole and smoothing it over as their judgement directs. Not that I can speak for Kaiser or anyone else.

I like how, when Goku and Ginyu switch bodies, they don't just keep their voices. Ginyu in Goku's body is still voiced by Goku's voice actor and vice-versa, just with different inflections. I also think it was cool how Porunga spoke in Namekian (though I heard they just used Klingon), and I think that was a nice detail.

I don't think DBZA is better than DBZ.
But there are some things that could have been applied to dbz.
The relationship between #16, #17 and #18 seems more organic and close than in the anime.
The villain movies are better in my opinion, because the movies mostly featured one dimentional villains, tfs gives them more of a personality.
Cell talks with his ass.

One of the things I think TFS did better is their fleshing out of Tenshinhan's and Piccolo's resentment of the Saiyans. Yes, it is mostly played for comedy, but, especially in Tenshinhan's case, where Toriyama barely gives him a personality at all at this point in the story, TFS's Tenshinhan is much more interesting.

#16 allowing himself to fight Cell because he has Goku's cells. Not that that justification was needed, but it makes complete sense.
Usually goes by "Kevtrev" elsewhere online.
Draws comics that may or may not have been blatantly inspired by Akira Toriyama's manga.

Episode 51 actually made me care about Kuririn and Android 18, so there's that.

Re: Parts TFS did better than actual anime?
Really not a lot. I give them credit because they're funny - I've watched their videos and laughed a lot at certain parts but even so I wouldn't say was done better than in the original, because the original has such a good balance of the humour, the action, the more serious moments which don't come across as well in TFS due to the over the top nature of the comedic stuff. But obviously, it is a parody...that's why it exists. What is sad to me is that there are people out there, and people I know, that seem to appreciate the TFS version more than the original. Each to their own I guess, but no, not for me.

If by "actual series" you mean Z dub, then it's completely understandable, TFS is a better parody of the original series.SSJ Brojeta wrote:Is it bad that I'd rather watch Abridged than the actual series?
Re: Parts TFS did better than actual anime?
Not at all. This is all entertainment and entertainment is entirely subjective. It's entirely possible for a person to be much more entertained watching a parody of a show than the actual show.SSJ Brojeta wrote:Is it bad that I'd rather watch Abridged than the actual series?

I'd rather watch the series but its really freaking long. I love the abridged series though and I do find myself watching it more often since its easier to watch.SSJ Brojeta wrote:Is it bad that I'd rather watch Abridged than the actual series?

There is nothing wrong at all, for example, there is anime called Ghost Stories, where dub actually turned into parody of itself.

Re: Parts TFS did better than actual anime?
Piccolo training Gohan to take over the world is a lot more interesting than the main series. There's nothing wrong with how Toriyama did it, I just think Piccolo improving him to take over the world only to grow to care for him and end up helping to save it adds a nice layer of irony I find appealing.
When someone tells you, "Don't present your opinion as fact," what they're actually saying is, "Don't present your opinion with any conviction. Because I don't like your opinion, and I want to be able to dismiss it as easily as possible." Don't fall for it.

Nothing, everything in it is purposely written out of context or caricatured to exaggerate their roles, not fix or deepen them. They aren't portraying anything in any parallel to the written work at all.

But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

Ghost stories is only hilarious because as far as I've heard the original series was generic and boring. But its still an better independent dub.coola wrote:There is nothing wrong at all, for example, there is anime called Ghost Stories, where dub actually turned into parody of itself.
