Most likely. The image is sharper than I thought it would be. I don't have the rest of the series on DVD. It's dirt cheap. The cropping is a tad bit bothersome, but I think the pros far outweigh the cons. This is the best we'll be getting for a while. I tell you what, though. If they release it in a better format in say, five years, I'm never purchasing anything from camp Funimation again.
Amen to that! I also agree with you on the cropping bit and the image sharpness 100%.

Well, even if the cropping and bonus features weren't an issue, it remains to be seen whether I'll be picking up more than just the first box set. I don't exactly have a ton of money on me or a bi-monthly paycheck I can rely on (I don't have a job right now 'cos of my classes), so even though these sets are a pretty good deal, I still might not have the dough to spare. If I did, then hell, I'd certainly be looking into getting the subsequent releases once I've had my own look at the first one... o_o
Art, etc. links taken down for now. Will be updated at some point. I dunno.

Only this set and the next strictly because of good price and good subtitles AND the eps aren't available in the states otherwise.

but I'll still get Dragon Box

This is what scares the crap out of me, I really want to buy this for the reasons that everyone else has listed, but I've obsessing over whether it's really worth it since FUNi could always come back and screw us over. I don't want to spend $30 every once in a while and then have to re-spend it 2 years later so that I can get it un-cropped.

So, yeah, if the cropping doesn't annoy the crap out of me, I'm probably going to get at least the Namek set, if nothing else.

You know what? I was trying to be optomistic, and humoring the thought of getting this set, but... screw it. I've heard and seen enough. I'm not joining the "ZOMFG FUNimation SuXorzz Club," because they honestly do excellently with just about everything else. But any of my previous intent to buy this set is kaput, dead, gone. Unless they shape up and re-release something better, count me out.

Given the company's dealings in the past it's entirely possible. I thought the Ultimate Uncut Editions were going to be the new standard for years to come. Thank god I didn't invest in those.

The DragonBoxes don't have any changes in terms of color or anything else. They simply repaired the damage to the print after the telecine was completed. They are exactly as they were animated and how they appeared on television.

Only if by some absolute miracle Corey's review somehow ends up proving the widescreen and missing Cha-La insignificant against the good aspects (Video quality and such).

Like I said, I'm not on the "I Hate FUNi Squad," I've just given in and shifted my opinions on this box set. I'm with Tenken on this one; it's crap, FUNi either knew it was crap and tried pushing it anyway, or were stupid and somehow thought we fans would like this. I'm still probably gonna buy other DVDs in the relatively near future (Bardock special and Path to Power, specifically), but count me out on this box set, and others in the line if they're all this bad.

Don't get me wrong, I like Funi, they are my favorite R1 company and in general any show I like I generally hope they get.

But at the end of the day, DBZ keeps getting stabbed in the fucking chest, and a lot of it was because of being consistant with old stuff, which i can understand, and even accept, but this set IS bullshit, people can argue I'm biased, and i LIKE Funi, imagine if I didn't...

You WON'T see an unbiased review of this, because everyone going in to review it is aware of what is going on in way or another (if they are gonna post to daixex and most other anime sites), and have already formed their opinion on it.

I personally think the REAL reason widescreen was chosen was so they could re-release it on HD-DVDs or BluRay in a few years.

Widescreen can be done on hd disks, it would have black boxes on the sides, no difference from a letterboxed dvd (cept for that its on the top and bottom)

How is it crap if you havent even watched it yet....

DBZ isnt holy, they can do what ever they want to do to it, they have the rights to it,not you ... just like Star Wars. If you dont want it, dont buy. Also dont babble on about how much you hate it, because your not going to buy it anyway right?

I'm not going to buy it... but I WANT TO... that's the problem... people really wanted these sets... except for the widescreen shit.

But now instead of ignoring it and not buying it, we should do something to convince FUNi to change it.

Now quit being an asshole and telling us how we should or shouldn't complain, because dammit I want a decent release of my favorite fucking show, that is in many ways next to holy. Live with it.

First off, I guess I don't TOTALLY hate funimation. I'm just pissed that they can get everything right except DBZ. I love their Dragon Ball releases. I love their releases of Spiral, Fullmetal Alchemist, Yu Yu Hakusho, and everything else.

But I stand by my opinion that this box set it shit.

And as far as that DBZ isn't holy comment: It isn't, but you know what?

Lucasfilm almost got their fucking facilites firebombed because they remastered the series and added Hayden Christiansen to the Return of the Jedi. Fans complained, and we got the original trilogy. Imagine if they pulled some shit like this.

Yes, I am. Unlike the 5 or 6 fans here who've bailed on their pre-orders or plans to purchase solely based off GoC's negative comments and some quality-reduced pics, I'm going through with this because above all, I just want this damn series in full translated form from Daimao. Also because the price/episode-count has made this too tempting, and quite frankly I no longer give a shit that we lose 16%; it's not like the previous R1 releases were 100% complete. Remastering it at all with the addition of the dub with the Japanese BGM also gives me the confidence to go for it, like it or not, I'm getting every season set that's released. I don't like the wide-screen anymore than the rest of you, but this deal is just way too good IMO and as stated, the pros outweigh that one annoying con from my point of view. Every one of you guys can bail out on giving season 1 a chance if you want, boycott it like the colonists did British tea, but I'm staying on track and not losing sight.

Peace!

I'm planning on teaching myself how to make AMVs, and obviously most of them once I'm making 'em will be DbZ. But this stuff doesn't make good source footage. Unless you're making trailers.

...Just thought I'd point that out.

Excuse me for having better things to spend it on than a DBZ release that I was settling for before this point.

I never bought those (beyond Movies 1-3 Ocean dub) so that can't be used against me.

Good for you, but if it turns out being good enough that I made a bad decision in cancelling it's not like the release is only on the market for a few days. I can pick it up with my next paycheck.
