Cynthia Cranz natural accent could've been a nice touch. I know not all southern accents are the same, but it could've been a nice touch to convey that part of her personality.

If it were clear that that's what Toriyama was going for, then sure.

However, as I talked about earlier, it doesn't seem to be clear whether Goku is a hick, or just generally uneducated and stupid. He's clearly not smart or educated, that much is obvious, but it seems that there isn't a universal agreement, even among competent translators, over whether he's generally stupid or hick-stupid (which is not a term, but I think it'd be funny if it was..."Man, he is so hick-stupid").

So personally, I don't believe he necessarily has to come across as a southern hick in the dub. As long as it comes across that he's kind of a dumb-ass, that's enough for me, and I believe he comes across that way nowadays in the dub.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

This is an interesting topic. I can see why including a "hick" dialect would better indicate that Goku is uneducated, but I don't feel it's necessary in other languages. I think there are ways to display that point without using such a dialect.
