We don't really know if Buu actually knows everything that tiny part of him knows in real time or if it had to return to him for him to be aware of what happened. It doesn't really matter if Buu knows or not. The piece didn't see much other than thick smoke and an arm and it not returning to Buu would be enough to inform him that XXI must have destroyed it. Same difference, really.
