Japanese text support?

Post by SonEric84 » Sat Feb 10, 2007 10:48 am

Okay, I have a stupid question. I remember awhile back when I would go to a site in japanese a little window would pop-up and ask if I wanted to install japanese font support and I always clicked no in fear of ruining my computer. Where can I get this safely? I'm sick of having little boxes all over japanese websites.

Just do it on any website. It doesn't matter which one. The package always comes from the same source, your Windows CD, or HD if it's already installed.

Also, if you go to microsoft.com and fish around a bit, you can find whatever language packs you need.

Does it work differently for Windows XP though? I haven't seen the pop-up for it in a long time.

Edit: Would this be it? And would I need to download that "global IME" thing it mentions? Thanks.

I'm pretty sure all of those suggestions apply to XP. And the IME just lets you type in other languages.

And all this is completely foreign to me. Macs come with the necessary software preinstalled to support pretty much any language you'll run across. :?

Damn, that download works only if I have microsoft office..which I don't. As for downloading it off of any site, the little pop-up window never comes up to give me the option anymore.

XP requires direct installation from the CD. You'll have to go to the control panel, regional and language options, go to the languages tab and check the 'Install files for East Asian languages' box. Hit okay, it'll prompt you for the Windows XP CD, etc.

That's odd...mine doesn't need a CD at all.

Depending on how XP was installed on your computer, the files may have already been saved to the System32 folder if memory serives.

Don't they have language packs on Windows Update?

Not for XP, last I checked (which admittedly was a long time ago).

Alright, I know this is sort of a necro-post....but I didn't want to start a new topic for something that already has one. I just noticed that I can now copy and paste japanese text and view it on my internet explorer. Now, I never installed anything. However, last night I just installed firefox....could that have installed the text support? I can't type it, only see it and copy and paste. Anyone know?
