Question about the subtitling on the "old" funi dv
Okay, so I just watched the episode where Piccolo and Kami fuse on the Imperfect Cell - Encounter disc, and it left me sort of confused. The part when Yamcha is speaking to Trunks at Kame House the subtitle reads "right" but Yamcha is definitely saying more than that (seeing as I clearly heard him say jinzoningen). Also, the shopkeeper who calls the police when #18 walks out with her new outfit comes up to the van window and says something, but there is no subtitle for it. My question is, is this a defect, or what?

Do you have the correct subtitle track on? There are two subtitle tracks... one goes with the English dub (acting as the "Closed Captioning" track), and the other is the literal translation that goes with the Japanese audio track.SonEric84 wrote:Okay, so I just watched the episode where Piccolo and Kami fuse on the Imperfect Cell - Encounter disc, and it left me sort of confused. Yeah, I turned it on from the main menu, so I don't think that could be the problem. Anything else you think it could be?

It may have been a mistake on Daimao's part, I mean when you're translating and typing out the scripts for dozens and dozens of episodes with a deadline, you're bound to make mishaps. Guy's only human. Of course, it may have been a mistake on the part of the DVD authorer, or just Daimao's personal interpretation of Yamcha's dialogue. Only Mr. Simmons can answer this with a valid statement, lucky for us, he's a regular on this board.

Also it might be due to the time this DVD was released. I have the Androids 'Invasion' DVD and there are a few occurances when some of the dialogue is altered slightly in the Japanese captions, 'Damn' becomes 'Darn' for example. I doubt it like but it might be that Funi was still tampering with some of Daimao's scripts.

Well, Daimao could have been paraphrasing instead of taking what was said and translating it word for word. For example, "jinzoningen" could be replaced with something like "monster" or "creature."
As for the guy clearly saying something that wasn't put in the subtitle, I've had the same thing happen with my Kid Buu disc right. When Babidi's in hell and Buu has just died, he says something (that's clearly not a laugh, or sigh, or anything). Or maybe it is a laugh and I just can't tell

It's probably on me.
I went and looked, and yes, the second sentence in Yamucha's line went untranslated. It should have been something about Trunks being an important force against the Artificial Humans. I don't have the original script anymore to check against (hard drive failures will do that), but it looks like a mistake that I would have made, rather than anyone else down the production line.
The shopkeeper's "Oi, kora!" was just more of the same "hey, you!" as he was demanding payment.
We didn't have the same QC tools in place then that we do now (I might even have been working from VHS still at that point, not sure), so I can see how that would have gotten through.
So, what Conan said.

Oh okay, thanks. Even though I don't have any interest in buying them...is this going to be corrected on the new season sets?
