Goku needs to learn new techniques
Goku needs to learn new techniques
I felt like posting this here because it kind of spun out of another post I just made, but unlike that one - This pertains to new concepts and techniques. Honestly, unlike many other Shonen protagonists - Goku doesn't learn too much new stuff (I guess because he doesn't always need to). Only recently did he learn the Mafuba and as cool as that was - I still think he should learn ORIGINAL techniques. Like Piccolo and Krillin with their signature moves, Goku needs to create his OWN technique in my opinion.
I'm trying to lean away from ki-based attacks (although I've always liked the idea of a Kamehameha Sword). But DB Super likes referencing the past a lot. Well, in the past - Goku demonstrated that he might be a telepath and possess telekinesis. Like, when he read Krillin's mind randomly on Planet Namek. Well, maybe Goku can train this ability to create some awesome new techniques. Only problem is that for Goku, a lot of the techniques I'm thinking about seem like something Goku wouldn't resort to. But still, I guess that's what makes it interesting? Maybe, one technique revolves around reading a villains' attacks before he even makes them OR bringing enemies towards him and punching them in the face (only enemies because Goku would never use this in a fair fight). Or even manipulating ki using telekinesis, I don't know.
And then there's an idea a friend brought up about Goku creating new techniques revolving around the different elements (like Avatar), something I believe Sun Wukong (who inspired Goku) has at his disposal. Perhaps, Goku creating fire-based and water-based techniques to use against his opponents? Or even summoning lightning to manipulate and bend to his will?
But yeah, I know the ideas aren't that great - But that's not the point of the post. I just desire to see Goku learning new techniques in the future (even Vegeta). Maybe, they'll demonstrate them at the next tournament? I know many fans wouldn't want this because they don't want Dragon Ball to become gimmicky but I'd argue to say that it would only help expand Dragon Ball and add more character development to Goku.

Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
I don't want most major characters to learn completely brand new techniques; this show is already overloaded with destructive beams and abilities. There's a point where it gets really redundant. I really don't want to see Goku yelling "BOKU GA WARU HAAA" or some shit over and over like the kamahameha, just cause writers feel the need to showcase his brand spanking new elemental wave or telekinetic pulls.
What I want is for characters to use the techniques they already have in new and unique ways, instead of spamming them. I'm sure we all remember the feet kamehameha and the instant transmission kamehameha. Or Piccolo purposely aiming away from Android 17 to cover him in projectiles. I love stuff like that. How about Krillin having the ability to disperse his kienzan into mini, rapid ones? Or Vegeta making more use of those ki chains he used on SSJ2 Goku? This all comes down to the directors, artists, and animators though.
The only major character that is in dire need of new abilities is Future Trunks. He has a sword. Time to learn how to produce ki through it.

"Dragon Ball once became a thing of the past to me, but after that, I got angry about the live action movie, re-wrote an entire movie script, and now I'm complaining about the quality of the new TV anime. It seems Dragon Ball has grown on me so much that I can't leave it alone." - Akira Toriyama on Dragon Ball Super

Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
I would rather not have him any new techniques like the ones you suggested at all.. He is already so ridiculously powerful it's broken..
Let him stay as a martial artist who knows how to channel energy as ancient martial artists..
I don't want him to turn into a magician and go alakazam like buu..
He has a fighting style let him keep it..
That being said he recently learned the Mafuba, which suits his style more..
He predicted hits movements before you could say he made this new technique on the spot too..
He is more of a guy who uses his already available ones creatively

Disclaimer: I might get into a disagreement with you. Sometimes I might even get feisty about it. I'll never harbor negative feelings because of it though. I hope you feel the same way!Jinzoningen MULE wrote: Maybe I should start making it a point not to comment when I'm not sure of something. Too many people know what they're talking about around here.
I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.
Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
I feel that Goku should first reincorporate some of his classic boyhood techniques like the Hasshuken, Kaiten Kogeki, Janken Fist, and various improvised uses of the Kamehameha -- maybe with a seasoned adult-like quality to accommodate the current thematical tone of the series (think Goku punching Golden Freeza in the breast region of his chest except with more deception and concentration on sensitive regions of the body like the eyes).
Some other original techniques from the Dragon Ball era that I wish could make a return are the Thunder Shock Surprise and Dodonpa. The former has a greater likelihood of reappearing in the repertoire of a current viable character than the latter -- the question is who would it be that learns it? Thunder Shock Surprise is chiefly an anguish inducing suppressant made for paralysing and forcing a surrender out of the victim. It sends intense amounts of electricity into the victim and has the potential to kill them. Given the brutal nature of the technique, I feel it would be more appropriate in Vegeta's hands. Goku acquired the Mafuba from Roshi so why can't Vegeta follow suit by inheriting his own technique?

Well if Goku Black is any indication there might be a lot more to god ki then just increasing their power, if he's going to get anything new I hope its from that.

Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
I wouldn't mind if Goku learned new existing techniques from martial arts masters across the universe or even in the other universes. I think what makes Goku great is that he isn't the type who creates his own techniques...rather he's always taken the teaching of others and incorporated it into his fighting style in a unique way. I'd like to see that learning aspect come back to the series. I think they have tried with Whis but the problem is we don't really see what he learns or how he improves enough. Same with Vegeta in that respect.

I wanna know why Trunks keeps using the Galick Gun and Masenko, and his own moves that he had in Z.

Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
What new techniques can Goku learn though? I mean, nearly every has been done. Unless you want Goku to start dabbling heavily in magic and become Doctor Strange. I mean, when it gets to the point to that Gotenks is a creating technique that spit out explosive ghosts, I think it's safe to say that they were clearly running out of ideas for new techniques for the cast. Even if it was meant to be a gag, it was still a deadly technique.

We just had Black pull a scythe out of his freaking hand and cut dimensions with it. Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
What if he learned the Hakai method used by Beerus to destroy Zamasu. That would be aswesome if Goku could do that to enemies like Frieza.

Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
Goku is ok as he is now, he just needs use more frequently the techniques he already has.
Dragon Ball was always a kid series and fans should stop being in denial.
Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
If I can say one good thing about Super is that I love that thier bringing old techniques back. Sure they've been completely useless most of the time, but I appreciate the idea. I don't think Goku needs to learn more techniques, rather, I think he should use his old ones more often. Zanzoken, Janken Fist, Taiyoken. Sure they may not have AS much utility now, but they could be made useful with some creative writing.
How do you get into the Ginyu Force? With a letter of RECOOMEndation!
Re: Goku needs to learn new techniques
Goku creating his own technique? Sure. Make the Super Dragon Fist canon. Movie 13 and GT used it, so it's not an all new attack, but it is a Goku original.
If you want something that's never been seen before, it can be a little difficult, sure, but if people are still able to come up with attacks in fan fiction that aren't complete ripoffs, then so are Toriyama and Toei, and signs point to yes.

Creative use of KI will suffice. I mean, after a beam that could destroy a planet, what use you can find for elemental attacks?
It's an animation, they could do any kind of stunts.
