The Monkey King.

Post by TriforceCaptre » Sun Apr 22, 2007 2:16 pm

I think this is on topic since it somewhat involves, "Journey to the West" but if not, and if it's already been discussed I apologize.

I was doing some channel surfing a minute ago and on the Sci-Fi channel there's a two part (2 hours each) movie called "The Monkey King". I got curious, so I put it on and checked the info. I wont wright it all out but it's about an American businessman in China who must stop an "epic battle among chinese gods" with the help of a "wisecracking Monkey King". Part two describes him battling "the evil Shu, for the manuscript of Journey to the West". The Monkey King's name seems to be Wachong.
I've only had it on for a few minutes so I can't really say much about it.
It's on until five p.m. (EST) so if you're interested you might want to check it out.
Edit: I forgot to mention that it was apparently released in 2001.

That 2 part movie was maybe the worst Journey to the West TV adaption I've ever seen. And I probably have seen more than most people here ^_~ My favorite series is still the first TVB Journey to the West series with Dickey Cheung.

I believe you're referring to The Lost Empire, starring Thomas Gibson (the dude from Dharma & Greg)? It was a made-for-TV-movie that aired on NBC. It was... uhh... awful. I remember watching it when it premiered thinking it was sooooooooo cool to see a Journey To The West adaptation on American TV :P.

You can get the DVD on Amazon...

If that's what it was originally called then yes. They just called it The Monkey King on Sci-Fi. I have to agree that it was definitly the opposite of good. I suppose to be fair it wasn't exactly an adaptation rather just a story that involved the characters (not that I'd know the difference either way since I've never read JttW)...that of course doesn't excuse the badness though.
Now that I've seen that and that live action Dragonball type movie I can be happy that I never had to waste money on them, the time spent however can never be given back :( .
