Whis created a new timeline?
I've heard people say that Whis literally CREATED a new pre-apocalypse timeline for Trunks and Mai to travel back to, but what would stop that timeline from existing anyway (just as other past and future timelines do) and what would keep the time machine from being able to go there?

Timelines don't just exist, he had to prevent Zamasu from carrying out his plan to cause a split. I'm not sure what the issue is.

Re: Whis created a new timeline?
In some series, there are an infinite number of timelines, for each possibility where anything could happen differently. However that's not the way it works in DB, there was originally only one timeline, and new timelines are created when a time traveler changes something in the past.
Cool stuff that I upload here because Youtube will copyright claim it: https://vimeo.com/user60967147

Re: Whis created a new timeline?
Trunks can't choose what time of his future he travels to, though? He chose what time of the past he traveled to during the Android saga, so I'm not sure why he can't travel to the future pre-Zamasu.
I don't see why Whis is required in creating anything, unless I'm not sure how the time machine works. Maybe I'm not aware of its limitations regarding what era it can travel back to when returning to the future. ...Which only makes Whis's involvement seem all the more overpowered.

Re: Whis created a new timeline?
He had to create a new timeline because no future close enough to Trunks' original one existed yet. Like I said, they aren't just there, there has to be a splinter that actually creates a timeline.Bulma's Foot Masseur wrote:Trunks can't choose what time of his future he travels to, though? I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but Future Trunks can choose how far he goes back into the alternate past. It's not recommended since it creates additional parallel worlds and he's responsible with the settings once he's aware of this fact. That's correct, he specifically chose where to arrive when first meeting Goku. Afterwords, he strictly utilized that specific road towards the alternate past.Bulma's Foot Masseur wrote:Trunks can't choose what time of his future he travels to, though? Am I reading you correctly? Are you asking why Future Trunks doesn't travel forward in time? I don't know why he would. For the sake of addressing what happened and why, Future Trunks has kept his time machine settings static to avoid creating additional parallel worlds. His only source of outside help derives from traveling to Goku's era and back in real time and nowhere else. That's the only option he'll consider.
Whis' motive was to prepare a world that hasn't been destroyed by Future Zeno for Future Trunks and Future Mai. He intends to avoid those circumstances and since there's no existing method to alter the fate of Future Trunks' original era, he guided instruction to craft another parallel era similar to his obliterated world.

Trunks unconditionally leaving the settings untouched explains a lot. But say Trunks did alter his final destination arrival time to be a few years earlier...what would actually happen in that case? I know there isn't an infinite number of timelines, so would attempting to send the time machine to a "future" date that you didn't arrive from just dump you out in a void?Nejishiki wrote: Am I reading you correctly? I say "future" because it's technically the past from Trunks' perspective. If he could travel to the past during the Android saga then I'm not sure why he couldn't suspend his own ethics to travel to his own timeline's "past" since Whis is going to accomplish that anyway. But I'm guessing I just think the time machine has more options than it really has and I'm confused.

I believe Whis states he won't be creating a new timeline because his method is different. He never states exactly how...but it isnt the same as Trunks doing that at all. I may be wrong.Bulma's Foot Masseur wrote:Trunks unconditionally leaving the settings untouched explains a lot. If Trunks changed the settings there is no guarantee he would even end up in our timeline. He would most likely travel back to the past of his own as you stated but would create yet another new timeline

It's likely a form of the Artificial Humans arc scenario repeats: He creates another alternate past based on his present. Future Trunks arguably suspended his "ethics" before (His motives and intentions were unknown). Well, another Future Trunks did anyway. The scenario I referenced earlier is what led to Future Cell arriving and one Future Trunks being murdered. Based on that nightmare, I'm sure it's reasonable to assume that he'll never alter coordinates again. That's the simple answer based on pre-existing information. I hope that was comprehensive enough.Bulma's Foot Masseur wrote:Trunks unconditionally leaving the settings untouched explains a lot. Whis claims that he'll go to Future Trunks' alternate future before Future Zeno destroys his era, alert Future Beerus of his coming death, and request Future Beerus to take care of Future Zamasu. Furthermore, to prevent Future Zamasu from spreading across the universe and beyond again, he claims that he has something superior to the Mafuba sealing technique. When it's all said and done, Future Trunks and Future Mai travel towards the new pathway that was prepared for them.GodKaio-Ken wrote:I believe Whis states he won't be creating a new timeline because his method is different. Yeah the mafuba is what i was thinking of thank you.Nejishiki wrote:It's likely a form of the Artificial Humans arc scenario repeats: He creates another alternate past based on his present.
