I just wanted to see if everybody was going to say Funimation makes crappy sets, but apparently it didn't work
What? That makes no sence. Everyone already knows they do.

Edit: Actually, to be fair I should just say they make horrible choices when it comes to how they release DragonBall in general. Every other anime they have is done pretty well. :?

AIGHT, fuck it. After the third season, I'm just going to continue with my singles collection, and finish where I left off.

Because it is damn expensive in stores. Also, I don't have any methods of ordering online. Since I've been collecting the singles from the Garlic Jr. Saga up until the Babidi saga, so I might as well just finish it off by purchasing the three remaining box sets.

Wow. I just realized how long I've been purchasing dvds from FUNi, and I still don't own the entire series.

That shot of Vegeta is less then a fourth of a second long.... You kids have to much time on your hands, but so do I, because I just checked it.

I actually have never seen the Freeza saga on DVD in any stores. Even at Anime North, there were box sets from the Garlic Jr. saga all the way up to the end of GT. And the new season sets. And the movies. :?

What's the deal with the Freeza saga?

It alternates between Gohan and Vegeta very quickly, but the effect still allows you to see Vegeta quite clearly. Just because the effect is fast, it doesn't mean it's unimportant. If they just scanned the film properly and didn't add all the extra "remastering", these issues wouldn't exist. When colours from two separate frames of film are bleeding into eachother, you know you've got a serious problem.

In fact, I'm not even sure how this happens. Obviously whatever program they used can't differentiate one frame from another, let alone specific details. However, this kind of sheds some light on the "disappearing lines" issue. It would seem that this program somehow bleeds one frame into the next, and when the screen shakes violently or alternates quickly on a frame-by-frame basis, it stamps a sort of "after-image" into every frame. That's why Nappa's teeth end up in his mustache, or the why the Namek sky is suddenly on Vegeta's face, or why Vegeta's face is on Gohan's scarf, etc.

This obviously has/will lead to more complications beyond the Gohan/Vegeta scene. Frame-by-frame restoration indeed!

Here's the source images, if anybody's interested in comparison:

Didn't FUNimation say they paid like a million dollars or somthing for this whole process to be done?

Well, I made a little split screen image...

Where the Hell is that green comming from? Is it because the line is so bright it just freaks out and dont know what color to put out? This reminds me of when you take a picture of the sun with a dijital camera... its so bright it dont know what the Hell is going on.

With a million dollars, they could have easily bought the dragonbox masters. :x

The green lines are from the Namek sky from Gohan's frame, the white lines are from Gohan's face. It's pretty much bleeding the colors from each frame together.

I'm pretty sure he just wanted to catch us with our pants down. He probably thought we'd all bitch about how awful it looks, and then he'd come out and say "haha, it was a Pioneer release noob!" Unfortunately, that screencap is a dead giveaway:
- Wrong horizontal range
- Horrible encoding
- Pale colors/off palette
- Vertical edge-matting
- Wrong ratio/non-animorphic

They just...never made a box set for it. Sadly. Also, it's important to note that they don't have box sets for the Great Saiyaman saga, as well as the Cell Games saga. You have to buy the box, that comes with the first two DVDs of that particular saga, and then you have to purchase the rest to fill up the box.

So I don't think it's been mentioned, but wasn't Brice Armstrong the original narrator for Funimation? Even if he wasn't, I was kind of hoping that his narration would be left intact and wouldn't be redubbed with Kyle Herbert. Does this mean that all the narration is going to be redubbed by Kyle Herbert now? I deifntiely hope not, I loved the original narrator's over the top voice

Yeah, he mentioned in his blog or whatever it was AGES ago that he was redubbing the narrator's stuff for the entire series.

Brice Armstrong was never the narrator for Dragon Ball Z; He only narrated Dragon Ball. Dale Kelly was the original narrator for Z, as well as the voice of Captain Ginyu, but now that Hebert has redubbed the narrator and Armstrong has redubbed Ginyu, it's like he was never in the show at all. Personally, I'm glad Kelly's gone. I couldn't stand his over-the-top acting as the narrator. Not that Hebert's much better, but still.

Oh I see, thanks for clearing that up guys. But like I said, I liked Kelly for his being over the top, that and the nostalgia. Kyle Herbert is just meh for me.

I recently finished watching the dub version of Season 2. First, I was pleased that they added some light swearing like "damn" and "hell" into the dialogue. I missed it when they aired the uncut version of season 2 on Cartoon Network a couple years back , so I had no idea they'd made an attempt to make the level of dialogue a bit more accurate until now (cuz, ya know, in the Japanese version, Vegeta gets fucking pissed when those fucking fuckers blow up his fucking house  ).

There were things that annoyed me about some of the redubbing, namely things regarding the early season 3 stuff (which, uh, I guess we should now refer to as season 2? Confusing....) So characters like Vegeta and Krillin were redubbed, and some of the lines are rewritten, yet a bunch of the really dumb ones were still left in? Example: Vegeta and Krillin still both say "mondo cool", yet they changed Vegeta's "Mr. hotpants" line (personally, I thought the latter was much funnier!) And worse, they didn't bother with fixing some of their previous mistakes. Vegeta has a line that goes something like "Ginyu's in Gokuu's body, and he still has Gokuu's power!" Come on, Chris Sabat! You've voiced Vegeta for eight years now, you should know the word "Gokuu" NEVER leaves his mouth unless it's in the context of something like "the one you guys call Gokuu." It would have been so easy to fix something like that, but they chose to just make the same mistake again when they redubbed it. Lame.

I wonder how long they're going to keep up the redubbing? I would figure they'll at least do it through the Freeza saga, but probably stop after that. Is Chris Sabat going to redub other characters of his as well? I'm particularly thinking of Yamcha ("That's whack!") and Piccolo ("Yes! Yes! I feel great! I'm wide awake!" Pleeeeese let them get rid of that fiasco!). I think Dende's voice changed too, didn't it? Or was Laura Bailey only doing that voice for the episodes prior where season 3 originally started? In any case, I was wondering if Dende does get redubbed, will they keep in the line about pissing off the God of Love? I mean, it's hilarious, but completely inaccurate, so maybe they would see it as a mistake that needed to be fixed.
