Ocean Studios' "Dragon Ball Kai" Dub Turns 16; Still Unreleased

I know all of this, but we have to take some risks and jump in the pool if we want something to happen.

Then you'd be better off making a petition. By asking people for money you're already alienating people who might be interested in your cause. Naturally more people can agree to "I want X show on TV" versus "I want to pay to have X show on TV". I just think you're basically shooting yourself in the foot by rushing into this without any sort of plan and without a platform to promote the issue to a wider audience. Posting this on a few forums and getting maybe 100 people (if that) won't cut it in the eyes of the broadcasters. You'd need to promote the hell out of this thing in order to get anywhere with it. Also, just getting it seen by people won't be enough either, you then need a compelling argument in order for get people to commit. Judging by your posts here so far, as well as your page, you don't seem to have either at the moment.

If you have to do something like this then at least be smart about it. I'm one of the biggest supporters of this dub out there but even I'm finding it tough to side with you on this crowdfunding idea. That's really not a good sign.

I also support this dub 100% and I would do whatever I can to help it see a release, but we should probably get Kirbopher's input since he has connections and to be sure we can be safe from any legal repercussions that only hurt our cause even more.

We could also inform Lee Tockar, because if he was cleared to say he is playing Freeza he may have some leeway in terms of what he can say about the dub despite it never being officially announced. He seemed to still be under an NDA last time I asked, but if he is at least we will know for sure if there's any way he can support by perhaps getting his agent at Ocean involved too.

Yup. I want to hear this dub but I am not gonna pay for it unless it's an official release plus there is currently too much Dragon Ball right now for people to drop money on this crowdfunding. FUNi are gonna drop Buu Kai and Super probably soon after. Honestly I think the Ocean dub has passed the point of interest now as unfortunate as that is the franchise has moved on.

Arian, I don't understand why you'd open crowdfunding for this. While the Corus channels do run paid programming slots, it's not like you have the rights to the show and know their fees. If it's some attempt to show there's interest in Dragon Ball up here, the continued success of the franchise theatrically and on home video are proof enough.

It's not like the money was supposed to pay for their fees. It was just a crazy idea for everyone to get proactive about the situation.

Then you're telling people "Hey, give your money to this guy and he'll promise to count it up, and send it back to you so he can convince an unknown company to release an obscure dub of some Japanese cartoon." I know you have the best intentions, but it doesn't look that great from the outside.

I've E-Mailed Cartoon Network UK about perhaps airing Kai, with a particular focus on the fact they could get the original voices everyone in the UK grew up with back, since this dub exists, but I haven't had a reply yet.

No chance in hell that's happening they rejected Super because it was "too violent" and Super is significantly toned down in violence compared to Kai. The Cartoon Network we knew back then is dead, they can't even get the new freaking JL show to air at a reasonable time!!
Also Kai has already aired in the UK with the FUNi dub and MangaUK have released the FUNi dub of Kai so even if they did air Kai Toei Europe would give them the FUNi dub too.

Ocean Kai is already edited, and the DVDs/BDs being different from what's airing on TV is what happened back in 2002. We had the Funimation single DVDs, with Westwood airing on TV.

Plus, in the E-Mail I mentioned that if they don't pick up Kai, having a re-airing of the old Westwood Z, and Blue Water DB and GT would be nice. So, as unlikely as that is, once again, at least I'd have a definitive answer. I know that if Blue Water DB, and Ocean Z or Kai, and Blue Water GT aired on TV here, I'd sure as hell want to watch it, and I doubt I'm alone on that.

I sent a similar email to Cartoon Network UK around... 2 years ago now? I personally never got any kind of response so I wouldn't get your hopes up.
Call me a cynic but, at this point I doubt they even bother paying attention to these kinds of email requests. Either that or they just don't care. Though to be fair they're probably more concerned with the business side of things like attracting advertisers.

I do agree that it'd be nice to have reruns of the old series again. Although without Toonami it'd be kind of an awkward fit on modern day CN. Maybe they could air it on Boomerang instead? Who knows.

As far as the old series being re-aired the way it was back in the day is concerned I just don't see it happening, even when we just look at Z alone. For one thing they'd have to re-license it all, and considering Z is much longer than Kai it would be a much riskier investment. They'd have to re-license the Saban Ocean/Inhouse Funi dubs from Funimation for the earlier arcs, and then license the Westwood dub from AB Groupe for the Android saga onwards, which would obviously be a lot of trouble to go to just for the sake of being consistent with old broadcasts.

And as others have mentioned CN UK won't even air the much newer Super, so I'd say that pretty much rules out them airing anything else DB related again.

Well, with the US getting a revived Toonami, maybe CN UK should consider doing the same. Anime is pretty big in pop culture right now, so it would make a lot of sense for CN UK to try to get on that before some other channel grabs that niche up.

Perhaps a more general Toonami UK return petition might do some good, if spread to the right places.

At the very least, it could drum up some support, and show CN there is interest.

That's less likely than Cartoon Network Canada getting shutdown. Toonami has no brand history in Canada anyway.

Are there any points you'd like me to make in support of Teletoon and Corus airing Kai? I have the following:

-Dragon Ball has always appealed to both kids and adults
-There is fan demand in Canada
-The records that Battle of Gods made (as posted by Super Saiyan Prime)

I'm not sure there's much point.

The only way I see this working is if you do a more general petition to get Toonami in Canada and the UK, and mention the Canadian versions of Dragon Ball, aswell as a few other anime as shows that are already popular in America and Japan.
And even then, it seems doubtful to me.

Still though, do what you believe you must. Who knows, it might even work.

As much as I'd love to see this dub, I think they're being realistic... But I'll sign the petition regardless.

I feel the same, it's been so long and A LOT of bridges have been burned in terms of opportunities for this dub (most prominently Kix not being allowed to air it) but I will sign as I am in the minority who still care to see it. It will take a miracle for this petition to work, but I'm doing it because it won't hurt as it only takes a few seconds to sign.
