Unpopular DB opinions
Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I like "family man" Vegeta, specifically because it's a stark contrast to how he used to be. For Gohan and Krillin, it's much less interesting, since they were never evil villains hellbent on killing everyone and destroying the planet.
Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I think the problem this late in the series is if they aren't "family men" there's no way to take their characters other than regressing them. Gohan and Krillin especially just want to live peaceful Earthling lives, they were already in that direction during the Buu saga until the main villains arrived. Vegeta too for that matter, which is why during the early parts of Super people felt him training all the time to surpass Goku felt like it was a step backwards.
I mean what do you expect? We're late into the series where all the main characters are "old" and now are all married and have children. This isn't the Saiyan/Namek saga where every character was still young and hip.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Agreed. I'm happy with where they're taking Gohan because he's starting to feel like an active character again instead of window dressing. The idea of him and Piccolo coming up with teamwork moves together makes me happy.MozillaVulpix wrote:I agree with 'Family Man Vegeta' being boring, but I also find 'Family Man Everyone' a little boring. Krillin, Gohan. We get it, they have families and they care about them. That's great. But if they don't do anything else, what's the point of even keeping them around? "Wanting to be a good dad" isn't really a compelling character arc for me. Probably because this isn't the kind of series that would use that in any sort of complicated way. They're always going to be Best Dads now they have children, and there's no conflict there.
It was why I wasn't that excited for the last episode of Super, because I thought it was just going to be Gohan yelling about how he needs to protect his family and getting stronger because of that. Luckily, that didn't really happen. Heck, Piccolo kind of deconstructs that whole idea. I hope they keep that up.
It does come down to conflict, a lot of it. I find it interesting because it's the inverse of what's desired in real life. People wish for a home life where everyone gets along and nobody causes waves; but in fiction that sort of thing is incredibly boring for the audience. It bothers me seeing a bland Vegeta who acts in an ideal, vanilla way. That's why I can't get behind domestic Vegeta who repeatedly turns Gokû down even when Bulma tells Gokû it's ok to take Vegeta with him. His gravity room is even free now that Bulma isn't using it for pregnancy exercises anymore and Vegeta's still not bothering to use the room. I can't tell if he's giving up on his own accord, or if he's giving in to peer pressure, or if he's low on confidence from all the cow-towing he had to do to Beerus and Whis earlier in the series? I don't know and I think I'm going to keep wondering about it until it's addressed in-series.

Even if you don't like the manga, I find it hard to believe that you would genuinely want it to be a mere summary. That's a total degradation of any longevity it could have outside of the most collectorer of collectors. It made sense for the retellings, now it would just be an unnecessary spoiler for a sup-par parent anime.Helios518 wrote:The DBS manga should've stayed in the original summary format (How it did the BoG arc)

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Agreed entirely. It's why I was never a fan of especially when the Future Trunks arc happened and people were like "let Gohan be happy". Sure, I like my fictional characters being satisfied with their lives, but I also like having them actually grow and change. If they don't do that, there's basically no point in giving them screentime. And if you like the character and want them to get more screentime, it gets very frustrating. You don't want to justify as to why there's no reason for them to be in the series anymore.Chuquita wrote:It does come down to conflict, a lot of it. I could have gotten into anything...and yet I chose the story aimed at young Japanese boys about martial arts, and later about super-powerful aliens punching each other really hard.

I miss the aspect of lewdness that was so prominent in early Dragon Ball.

Roshi also doesn't appear too often so his perverted gag isn't seen as much, although it's still in several DBZ episodes and parts of Super. In fact I wonder if Roshi will go after Vados or any of the female Kai's or Gods at the upcoming tournament.

Same. I hope Cauliflowa does something similar to what Ran-Fan did in the 21st Tenka'ichi Budoukai to beat an opponent in ToP. That's asking too much from DBS though.Gog wrote:I miss the aspect of lewdness that was so prominent in early Dragon Ball.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
I think there are ways to create conflict and still have the characters be happy, but yeah, I think if some had their way, it would be Vegeta and Bulma are happy and never have any arguments and make love and have babies, etc. That's not a story.
I think it could, especially for Vegeta. He's a Saiyan who never had a great and stable upbringing. There are story possibilities there. For instance, what if his expectations for his children come into conflict with what his kids want. Vegeta is still Vegeta so affection doesn't come easy for him. I don't see how them having children makes them good dads, much less best dads."Wanting to be a good dad" isn't really a compelling character arc for me. Probably because this isn't the kind of series that would use that in any sort of complicated way. They're always going to be Best Dads now they have children, and there's no conflict there.

Re: Unpopular DB opinions
Yeah, there is no personal motivation in him anymore. If the relationships in DB were never established beyond just stating characters lived to together as Z did, I think that might have been enough. I never really understood why the fandom cared that much about that aspect of the show. Despite it literally having no relevance outside of filler. But if this was a show about fighting to be the strongest, then hell they should be training their kids to fight then. I used to think it was realistically logical that they didn't but after seeing how the characters literally don't go anywhere when they're not fighting. Now, I used to be one of those people who thought it made sense for the sake of realism, until I saw how too much realism made the show boring. Then I realized that these characters aren't real, and don't need to be peaceful or care for babies in real-time, if its controlled by the writer who can just tell and not show (in this coincidence) considering that it takes up episodes and time away from needed character development, while considering that Super is doing a painful opposite. Dedicating episodes and plot-points to their family life, and then just presenting characters getting these insane boosts in like 2 hours of normal exercise and in narrative statements, (further forcing headcanon rationalization videos) instead of showing them working for new directions of power, as Z emphasized much more. Super to me has wasted a lot of its episode space prior to this arc, in reflection.Chuquita wrote:Exactly! They should be capable of being both; and in a better handled series they could. Vegeta was still a layered character when it was just him, Bulma, and Trunks. Now that they have Bra he's just turning into this bland house-husband who reminds me a lot of poorly-written paper-thin male love interests in shoujo manga.
Cabbe always presented himself to me as an even wussier Tarble, and that didn't sit well with me. Not for a Saiyan. His timing wasn't any better either with him coming out after Gine, who is no different, and her coming after Tarble. Not only do they all feel like the same character overall (akin to the "Justice" characters now) but they also water down the Saiyan culture to me. Cabbe just sucks to me, based on the hype people give him just because hes just a new Super Saiyan that looks and acts like Gohan. He also seemed to make SS look more like a Superpower than a transformation, which I also disliked. I mean their commander looking unrecognizable as a Saiyan himself and more like a human, was what nearly broke that Camel's back for me. I didn't even know he was supposed to even be a Saiyan and I have to question what Toei is doing to them. Caulifla reminding me of the more interesting U7 Saiyans show the difference in interest that divides the two parallels, definitely.Chuquita wrote:Cabbe never interested me beyond his possibilities as a free ticket to visit Planet Salad and that hasn't happened yet. Caulifla really reminds me of the Uni 7 style saiyans and I'm excited about her now. I want to know more about her gang and her backstory if her personality is what they eluded to in #88.
Peace in this series is the equivalent of doing nothing as far as I see it now. Its no different to just a presumed time extended to them being off screen, where inactivity off screen and out of mention is inherently peace. The only reason we would see them doing normal things on screen is to just set up a joke or filler, which the series has been reduced to. You can look at Chi-Chi who stopped fighting for at least a decade or two and lives in peace with her personality no different than it was when Z started. Peace in this series is literally a character limbo, and when the writers don't know what to do with them they end up being straw-versions of what they do when the are on screen. If she were fighting, then the activity from the tension on screen would cause her to change herself to adjust and thus characterization that could lead to development. Gohan has proven to be just as stagnant, and because we know he doesn't train when off screen, he becomes incompetent on screen and that in itself is solely controlled on the writers who only see this being Gohan's character. Then then we demand his relevance, he just gets an instant power up due to crunch time. It again shows the coin-flip of a life the writers give these characters. The only thing repetitive with Vegeta is his focus for motivation, he can still be exactly the same if he just expanded his resolve. Which he did in the Kid-Buu fight. A smart way to write his character is to say his family gives him that pride he has, as they are apart of him. Not solely fighting for the aimless need to surpass Goku.precita wrote:I think the problem this late in the series is if they aren't "family men" there's no way to take their characters other than regressing them. If that's all you want, then all you want is fanservice, rather than an actual coherent story. And of course those aren't mutually exclusive; you could have a coherent story with "shine" moments! But if a story is perfectly coherent (and I'm really not seeing any compelling arguments that this one is anything but, despite constantly recurring, really poorly reasoned, attempts to argue otherwise), and you're bemoaning the lack of "shine" moments as a reason for the story's poor quality, then you're letting your thirst for "shine" moments obfuscate your ability to detect basic storytelling when it's right in front of you.

1) I like the DBS manga. 2) TBH that's flattering that that even in this thread, you found an opinion that still surprises you. 3) Considering how Toei cares about spoilers, I don't see that being a problem and I found the manga to be far more interesting than it is now when it was a summary of events.

I know it seems like I wouldn't be paying attention, but I don't like that option either. I prefer to have my laptop with me and pause if I have to look something up. I still think Dragon Ball Z Resurrection "F" is the best the franchise has looked (well after Super #66), I dunno I think I have guilty pleasure for some Yamamuro polish.

If you like that Yamamuro aesthetic, it definitely delivers that consistently, and with several good cuts of animation. I just think it's a horribly boring look, and "polish" is definitely not a word I'd use, unless you're referring to the plastic dollish look of his designs.Baggie_Saiyan wrote:I still think Dragon Ball Z Resurrection "F" is the best the franchise has looked (well after Super #66), I dunno I think I have guilty pleasure for some Yamamuro polish.

With Vegeta , it's like you said.
With Gohan, it's more interesting than Krillin because we're so used to seeing him as a kid but now we're seeing him become an adult. He's also got a child to protect instead of being the child that needs protecting.

I made a bet with Alee9977 that Vegeta won't be beaten quickly by an opponent. If I lose, I switch my avatar to Vegeta getting beat by hit. If I win, he switches it to Vegeta holding Black by his hair. This will last a month.
