Dragonball American edited scene

Post by Rainking187 » Mon May 17, 2004 5:08 am

In the Fortuneteller Baba Saga, there's a part where Krillin pulls down Bulma's top exposing her breasts, causing Master Roshi to have a massive nosebleed revealing the Invisible man. (If this wasn't Dragonball, that whole sentence would have sounded awful weird.) In the version on Cartoon Network, they open a can of tomato juice. I was wondering, where did they get the animation of someone opening a can of tomato juice?

A can of tomato juice? How'd they do that?! Did the pay TOEI millions to redraw the scene? :P

"We MUST get both Bulma AND Master Roshi!"
"Why?"
"Just do it!"
**Two arrive**
"Good! You're here! Now I can open a can of tomato juice!"
"Again, why'd you need them here for that?"
"It's a psychological disease. I can't open aluminum cans unless a teenage girl and a balding martial arts master are watching me."

Hehe...

I'm guessing that they just took a bit of animation from another part of the series and cut/pasted it. Or, if the animation was simple enough (I haven't seen their version), they did it themselves.

I remember seeing the cut version, but I've never seen the original so I couldn't tell you the differences exactly.

Question though. Did Goku ever take off on the Nimbus right before that happened? Cause they had Goku go back to Capsule Corp, get the Tomato Juice. (Or was it soup? Can't remember.) I can't remember who opened it, either Goku or Roshi. But yeah, that was the idea. I think they even shook it so it would explode... :?

Yeah, who thought that would work? Since when is tomato juice carbonated?

Since old-men stopped getting nosebleeds at the sight of boobies.

I believe they took it from the second DB movie.

But why redraw it? It's not like you could see anything, unlike in the manga. (was that volume released in a censored version? If so, how did they deal with it there?)

It doesn't matter. You are not suppossed to have any sexual content in cartoon aimed at children (although various shows have tried to push the boundary, with varying degrees of success).

There's no way they could get away with even implication in that scene. Someone lifts up a girls top to expose her breasts in order to give an old man a nosebleed? No...chance...in...hell. Even acknowledging that girls have breasts is still pretty risky in most cartoons.

And no, the manga had stopped being censored long before that. Even then, they'd have probably just covered up Bulma's breasts with something but left everything else unchanged. That's pretty much what they did with her nudie bits in the first graphic novel.

You know, I just remembered X-Men Evolution, specifically the episode "Walk on the Wild Side", which featured most of the X-Girls (Boom-Boom, Magma, Jean Grey, Rogue, and Shadowcat). It had lots of sexual innuendo, especially the music video bit, which had several instances of suggestive dancing (Shake that ass, Tabitha!)

That also reminded me a while back I passed by one religious network and they were showing an episode of an old biblical anime called "Superbook" from the late 70s or early 80s. Anyways in the ep, some kids met Adam and Eve, and one of Eve's breasts was uncovered. Her hair only went over one of them. And this is in the U.S.

Mmmm...religious boobies... 8)

Even ninja turtles tries to hint at swearing. "It's a shell of a town!" or "What the frickin' shell was that?!" for example.

Ahh, but it's okay if it's in the bible.

As to the X-Men: Evo episode, I know the one you're talking about. It doesn't beat several episodes of Justice League for pure out and out innuendo.

Green Lantern Woman: You can accept my training, or you cancontinue to wallow in your impatence.
*Flash wanders by*
Flash: Impatence?
*Both stare at him*
Flash: I'll go now.

Or...

Hawkgirl: Who wants to live in a world without men?
Wonder Woman: They can't possibly be that important to your life.
Hawkgirl: Don't knock it until you've tried it.

And that's not even mention the "Yeah, right there, that's the spot..." bit during one pan up the watchtower.

Nevertheless, there's still a world of difference between those examples and actually having someone flash their breasts.

[off-topic]Speaking of JLA, YTV just aired the "series finale" today (3-part season finale. Next season has a new name and replaces 3 charas). Hawkgirl's hot without her mask. Amazing fight between her and Hawkman. I'm glad he kicked the shit out of GL. Anybody know which heroes are joining the league next season?[/off-topic]

Next season has a new name? Half the people (including you) aren't getting the current one right.

They would never get rid of Bats or Superman. Nor should they get rid of Flash or Hawkgirl. I could live quite happily without Wonder Woman though. GL I don't mind, or J'onn. I dunno. I suppose it depends on how much they want to "shake things up".

What "current one"? The season finale I'm talking about is the one where the Thanagarians arrive on Earth and you find out Hawkgirl was a spy. She betrays her kind when she learns that they were going to destroy Earth as collateral damage in an attack on some other planet. After the third ep (the "series" finale as next season will have new name), Hawkgirl left and GL looked like he'd leave too since he was oh so sad (little bitch. Let's get Kyle Rayner in there! And Parallax!). The buzz I've heard was Flash, her and GL leaving, and Aquaman, Green Arrow and a third person replacing. Supposed to be tons of DC heros doing cameos in the next "series".

I'm quite certain that the can opening clip came from DB Movie 2. I don't have a copy of the edited episode 71, but the last time I watched the movie (some time within the past two years, I'd guess), I recognized it right away.

What a very awkward little piece of footage it is, too. Black background, with a hand pulling the lid off of a can (it turned out to be Kamesennin opening a beer can, I think). Soup cans generally didn't even have those kind of lids, until very recently.

Then they go and place that weird little Movie 2 footage between Kuririn screaming "now!" and red stuff squirting onto Suke-san.

Ingenious.

The current name of "JL", rather than "JLA". I am being picky.

It's possibly my fault, but really, did you have to write out everything that happens in the series finale there? It hasn't aired here yet.

YOU'RE the one that said I had the "old" series. I assumed you meant you had whatever the new series/season was where you were since you laughed at me. Odd, I feel slightly better for having ruined it for you... :P
