All of Namek was still not available. o_oHero 004 wrote:I've once again flip-flopped on these things. What do you like/dislike about the Season box sets?

This is my biggest gripe about this set. The "remastering" is a joke and is the cheapest looking attempt at video restoration I've ever seen. The widescreen cropping is a nitpick in comparison.theoriginalbilis wrote: Dislikes:[/b][/u]
1) The remastering: What I mean is, the blurring & over-brightening of the footage that makes animation lines disappear & Gohan's face look ghost-white. The widescreen is the least of my worries compared to this; I would've been perfectly happy w/ FUNi's older 4:3 masters (from the original DVD releases.)

Just like me. I don't own the rest of the Namek Saga, so buying these cheap is a good thing.Raki wrote:I bought the first 2 sets for the single reason that i don't own DBZ on dvd. Aren't other people disappointed with the dub as much as I am? I mean it's more bearable than before, and it has the original music, but it still sucks. I'm referring mostly to Season's 1&2, since everything after is more or less the same.
The only reason why I'm upset is because Funimation is a better dubbing company than they were in 1999-2003 and they've proven that they can make good anime dubs. But the DBZ re-dub is on the same caliber as a mid-budget, 90's dub, still. For a re-dub made in late 2006-early 2007, I expect way better.

Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

FUNimation still views DBZ the same way they viewed DBZ in 1996. I wouldn't expect their present-day dub to be any better than it was back then, and it shows.Vekurotto wrote:Aren't other people disappointed with the dub as much as I am? That said, it should be obvious I'm not exactly watching the new dub

And at the same time, selling a buttload of sets. Go figure.

I'm just so excited to finally see this show in its entirety both new English dubbed and more so Japanese subtitled.
The Dragon Box will probably never be available in America, and unless you have the patience and dedication to hunt down a bunch of those out of print 4:3 DVDs, then these sets really are the most reasonable means of collecting the series.

I'm in the generation of fans that started with Toonami, so I totally empathize with the feeling of having "missed the party", experiencing disappointment, and wanting to experience it myself. But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

Well, personally, I used to be a purist, and something like these sets would have been blasphemy even a couple years ago. But seeing as I kind of left DBZ behind, and am suddenly coming back to it (thanks in part by these sets) I don't really have anything negative to say.
I not an audiophile or videophile, so a little cropping and and some video problems don't bother me in the least. Most of the time, it's something I won't notice unless I am looking for it.
My small issues with it are:
-I wish there were 5.1 mixes for both the English dub and Japanese original, instead of just the main track.
-Having to switch to the Japanese audio for Head Cha-La is a pain.
-Other minor sound problems that I have heard about, like missing music or voice actors not re-dubbing scenes that could have really used it? (Freezas Countdown or Dump Kamehameha, anyone?)
But I mean otherwise I can't complain at all. Maybe I don't take it as seriously as others on the board. Maybe I should feel a little jipped since other countries have gotten better transfers on the audio and video. But I mean for $20-$30, it's not bad at ALL.
And for all the huffing and puffing and bluster that I have heard in the last 11 years (I watched Dragonball when it first aired in the US.) not a whole lot is lost in translation. Heck the English dub has gotten worlds better over the years. And in the end it's what it is, it's Dragonball, and bad dubs or whatever, the point was never lost on me. I love Dragonball in any form.
and uh... first post.

I'm going to be very simple about it since this has been done a lot of times.
I like the fact that it's affordable to the point that if you look in the right places you could sell it back to FYE for more than you bought it for and use the profit to get a cheeseburger and a Coke. I also like that it's uncensored and that there are a lot of different dialouge/soundtrack combinations. I also like that the Japanese dialouge can't be played with the American soundtrack as it should be illegal in most countries.
I hate the fact that FUNi felt it would be okay to butcher the visuals then lie to us just to make it that affordable instead of just getting ahold of something resembling the DragonBox master (even if it's a generation or two down the line from the original master) and charging us a bit more money for them.
