Wow, the re-re-dubs are complicated...
Thank god I watch the Japanese version

EDIT : One "re" removed. :)

Are we really up to 3 "RE"s now?

Agreed. One of the many reasons I don't like these sets. It just screams that everything was done half-assed.

I understand Sean Schemmel is with 4Kids, yet they can get him to do Goku for video games and not the series? What?

Chris Sabat voiced a dozen characters (nearly the entire Ginyu Special Corps., in fact), yet can't redo them all? What?

FUNimation says they dished out a lot of money for these sets. I'm not seeing where that money's going to. I guess it's true. People wanted cheaper sets with more episodes and that's what they got. Paying a cheap price for a cheaply made series of boxsets.

So, le'see. From what I'm able to determine, I've figured out a few more things concerning just what has and hasn't been redubbed.

Schemmel/Goku

Oh, come on. We ALL called this one, didn't we?

(Oh, and ignore any posts I made in Page 10 of this thread. )

Lemmy's Season Three Redub Prediction (Goku): Correct

Sabat/Vegeta

Vegeta is completely redubbed from start to finish on this set. Mild cursing has been added and a few of the more stupid lines taken out to balance out an otherwise mostly unchanged script, and with this admittedly huge effort there's no telling how far Sabat will continue to press his revision of the character.

Lemmy's Season Three Redub Prediction: Correct

Young/Freeza

Freeza is redubbed up until Episode 85, at which point the 1999 audio is recycled in its entirety for the episodes that follow. Freeza's first line in Episode 85 is noticably deeper than the improved version we were fed for the first disc, and I haven't run across any dialogue beyond said episode that has been revised in either wording or sound.

This is very unusual, since up until now Young's presence on the sets was suggestive of a complete overhaul.

Lemmy's Season Three Redub Predition (Freeza): Wrong

Sabat/Piccolo

Piccolo is exactly the same as he was in 1999, with (seemingly) no dialogue changes to be found anywhere on the six discs. This in particular is thoroughly disappointing but not entirely unexpected, and at last answers the question of how far Piccolo's redub will be taken beyond the initial 67 episodes-- it won't.

Lemmy's Season Three Redub Prediction (Piccolo): Correct

More to come as I examine the other characters more closely.

Well I got it myself and so far yes there are still animation mistakes for example I checked when frieza throws the island sized rock the screen shakes for a while and the lines on frieza start moving outplace also when the camera moves behind him and his hand flashs on and off it really annoyed me. I wish I had a dvd drive to prove it but I dont though I will ask anyone who has it to check it.

Even worse it's now not just violent shaking which causes mistakes in the animation because I've just noticed in this boxset that fast frame rate fighting scenes also have this error. For example in that scene where Tien was fighting against Jeice and Burter at King Kais place and most of the time his hands kept vanishing and a part of his shoulder did aswell.

I don't remember this error with fast fighting scenes happen in previous boxsets but if they did, prove me wrong.

From what I recall of the first set (don't own the second or third), just about any time the screen had vibrations going on, lines would start disappearing.

Just got it in the mail. Watching a few episodes, and I've noticed that the "remastering" in this set looks a lot better then the last two. Weird. Also, my disc three is scratched to shit.

Thanks a lot...you fuckers.

Make that disc 3, 4 and 5. I'm not fucking sending this back, because I'd have to pay the fucking customs fees again. The discs work on my PC, just not the DVD players...

I hate these sets

That's why I go to pick up mine directly from a source. I have to give the box a few motions to make sure that nothing inside is loose and therefore potentially screwed up before I'll con someone into gifting it to me.

If you bought it from an online store, just inform them about it.

He's got a point. Most online merchants have a disclaimer in place saying that discs that become damaged during shipment can be replaced at little to no cost ("little" translating to a shipping fee).

Listening to this set, it's amazing.

One episode you have Vegeta's death, and quite frankly I'm willing to admit Sabat did one hell of a job with that, one HELL of a job.

Then in that episode and the next we have Schemmel as Goku with the usual ridiculous dialogue they originally had ("I don't even have shoelaces"; and I just can't ever see Goku using the phrase "disposable commodity").

Other anti-favorites: Piccolo shouting "Holy smoke," Yamcha saying "that's wack." *facepalm*

FUNimation's handling of this series is just like Vegeta himself often is: manic-depressive.

I wasn't paying attention, but did anyone mention if Vegeta still babbles on about how Freeza took him away from his daddy, or does he actually try to encourage Goku to fight Freeza like a proud Saiyan and do it for all the Saiyans he killed?

Has anyone noticed that the sound quality for the Japanese audio is worse than the previous sets? In Season 1 and 2, it sounded close to stereo, while in this set, is sounds so...old. Is it because it was the only Japanese audio master that they had for the Frieza saga?

They didn't really change anything because they couldn't redub Goku and fix the dub errors. Although Vegeta does try to convince Goku to get more violent and defeat Frieza.
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

So when does everyone think Vegeta will stop being re dubbed? My guess is probably after he leaves the Room of Spirit and Time after training with Trunks. By that Point I think Sabat pretty much "got it". And if they go that far maybe we will finally hear BIG BANG ATTACK! In english, on the show, as I always thought Sabat nailed it in the games.

Nope. Just watch old Cell saga episodes. He's still high-pitched. Hell, his voice doesn't even get deep until he comes back from the dead in the Buu saga.

I kind of noticed something while watching these episodes. Each episode has a different level of brightness. I don't think it's really (much) to do with the way FUNimation remasterd it, but just how the film it was taken from was.

Image

The only image that pops up in each episode is the eye catchers, so this was a good example. This image shows the difference in color\brightness\darkness levels in some episodes in the season 3 set. The picture on the bottom right shows the different colors in better detail. The first row is the color of Goku's shirt in each picture, the second row is the background color and the third is the color of Goku's boot

How on Earth is blue becoming yellow? And I thought the green sky becoming blue in the Goku/Vegeta battle was something. ._.;

I think that has something to do with the way Funi saturated the original colors before the remastering and then it was further amplified by the remastering itself. I don't really know for sure.

Don't know if it's been asked but any word on season 4 yet, or is it still too early?
Be grateful the filler in Dragon Ball doesn't suck like the 3rd arc of Rurouni Kenshin.

FUNi saturated their digi-beta masters for the previous single releases and CN airings, but their film masters acquired for the season sets are evidently untouched prior to the "remastering" process VP&T gives.
