Spoilers in the games.

Post by Anonymous Friend » Fri Dec 07, 2007 2:30 pm

I'm considering getting a Naruto video game. With the dub only up to about episode 120, I don't really want to get something that's going to characters and storylines that I don't know yet.

This got me thinking about my experience with Final Bout on the PS1. Went i bought the game off of a friend I think I was still in the Freeza saga and had no idea who a lot of people were. It wasn't too bad I suppose cuz there was no real story there.

Has anyone had that experience of playing a Draganball game and not knowing half of the cast or running into plot and twists that you had watched or read yet?

Hyper Dimension for me. I'd seen the anime up to the Freeza saga, knew quite a bit about the Cell Saga... and a few sparse details about Buu and GT... but I actually had no clue who Gohan was. I'd never seen him with his father's gi, and I vividly remember calling my friend and asking "Why is Yamcha in this game?" :?

Budokai 2 was my first experience into the Buu saga outside of watching a few episodes on Toonami.

I was lucky in that I already knew about the later arcs by the time I played the games. Mind you, not in such great detail, but the games aren't exactly all that detailed, so nothing was ruined for me.

If anything thing they gave me something to look forward to. :D

This happened when I played DragonBall Z Legends. I also was watching the Freeza saga at the time, and that's when I got confused. I didn't know who the Androids were. I had seen Cell in images but didn't really know who he was. I saw Dabura, along with Buu, and wondered who they were.

Also; in that game, Goku turns Super Saiyan 3. I had no idea what that was. Ultimate Gohan also confused me, because I thought he was Goku.

I played the first Legacy of Goku game, where you only play as Goku, quite some time before I actually finished reading the Saiyan saga. For the longest time I thought for some reason that Piccolo, Kuririn, and Gohan managed to actually kill Nappa on their own, with Piccolo still dieing in the process. So I thought that having you fight Nappa was one of the things that they changed in the game, the same as how you fight all of Freeza's forms, even though Goku only fought his final one. So I guess that it would have been a spoiler if I wasn't so stupid.

Also, I noticed you brought this up in concern to getting a Naruto game - I wouldn't worry in that case, they never show spoilers in the games, rather they edit them out to avoid them. In Uzumaki Chronicles 1, Tsunade is turned into a chair so you won't know there's a new Hokage, and the Rasengan is renamed the Power Orb or whatever.

So in that regard, don't worry and pick up a game. As long as you are up to date on the english anime, you'll know enough to buy the game and not be spoiled.

Which game are we talking about anyway?

My friend and I got copies of DBZ Ultimate Battle 22 and Final Bout back when the saiyan and namek sagas played over and over...so we didn't know a lot of the characters, but we also looked on the internet and saw pictures and I even remember wondering who all those guys with blonde hair were on the posters in the ads in the back of the old EGM issues. lol Oh yeah, and I also bought Dragonball Z 18 & 1/2 special from my friend who thought it was the English music when he ordered it....man I thought that CD was so awesome. Of course, it turned out to be the Sonmay version...but I didn't even know bootlegs existed back then. This topic brings back so many memories.

My very first exposure to anything DragonBall was playing the first Gameboy game, adapting the Saiyan saga, on a multicart back in 1994. Of course, I had no idea what was going on, and beyond understanding that the game was some sort of text-based fighting game (the battle system is really weird), I never really had any clue how to play at all. It being completely in Japanese certainly didn't help.

My first REAL exposure to Dragonball, however, was in '98 or so, when I played Dragon Ball Z Super Butouden 2 for the SNES. I had no idea what was really going on, and who these characters were (I think I was still under the impression that Dragonball was solely a video game series at the time), but I had picked up some incredibly minor information about the series at the point, so I somehow made the connection that the big green evil guy (Cell) was called "Mr. Satan", since anyone named that had to be a villain. It technicalled spoiled some things for me, but I was so utterly clueless as to what the hell was going on that it didn't make much of a difference.

Don't worry about the fighting games. Ultimate Ninja 1 ends with the Konoha Invasion arc, and doesn't give away major spoils. In fact, some moves are hidden in shadow. Though due to some characters not being in the dubb yet at the time, some like Jiraiya, Gamabunta, and Itachi are voiced by different people than who are in the dub as their voices.

Ultimate Ninja 2 ends at the Tsunade arc right before the Tea Country arc, but then goes into an original storyline you might say of its own.

The spoiler for me was the irwin Super Battle Collection releases. Fuckin' bought Goten before we got to Freeza. And they had Broly when I bought him. I looked at the back of the box, and I was like:

"Hey, maybe this S.S. Goku is like some sort of nether-Goku, and he's evil."

Are you caught up to the dub? Are you going to import a game, or buy one in America? Because all of the Naruto games out now in American don't spoil anything. Ultimate Ninja 3 comes out in March, but by then, the dub should be well into the fillers, and past the current arc that the game is about.

*Spits cola on computer screen again*

GOD, I love that line even though I've heard it a million times. If I ever have a boat, even a little fishing one, I am painting S.S. Goku on the side of it. :D

Screw a whole boat, I'd settle with carving it onto a bar of soap. :D

Too bad merchandise laws are more strict here then in Japan - we could make a killing selling S.S. Goku merchandise.

I'd buy one of those bars of soap! XD

Thanks to those who put my Naruto spoiler fears to rest. I'll probably pick up a game in two weeks when I get some money. I just gotta figure out the good ones from the bad. I have a Wii and a PS2 so I guess I have a selection to chose from, but if I get a GC game I'll have to rebuy a GC controller and memory card. I would import but I would need something to allow me to play those games.

Anyone wish we had all these awesome games being released now, back when the you were still watching the series new?

Absolutly not, if they took the Naruto approach of editing out characters and special attacks. Imagine if Budokai 3 got rid of Gogeta and Jenemba just because they weren’t dubbed yet.
Oh and get the Gamecube titles, much more awesome then the PS2 games.

I have to politely disagree, I'd put out a vote for the Ultimate Ninja series over the Clash of Ninja one any day.

Course, if you have a 360 (I don't T_T) then I'd definitely recommend Rise of a Ninja.

I think that's why Budokai 1 didn't have Yamcha's So-ki-Dan. Wasn't fresh in people's minds and its introduction didn't come until a year later in DB when it was airing, so Budokai 2 got it.
