Why Watch In English/Japanese...?
Other than the Freeza Saga, I thought Funimation did a pretty good job. Also, why do people prefer the Japanese version. Other than the fact that I don't speak Japanese, I don't like Goku being voiced by an actor with a feminine voice.

The script is ridiculously inaccurate, names and terminology are changed, the original music is replaced(unless you purchase those faulty season sets) and the voices and acting are terrible in my opinion. It's just a matter of preference, the English dub and original Japanese adaption are almost like two completely different shows. I like the Japanese version better, as it is what I think Dragon Ball is.

Things like that should be expected when changing the language, although some stuff is pretty bad, but I think the voice actors are good and I can't imagine somebody other than Sean Schemmel voicing Goku. Plus if some names and terminology had stayed the same it would be harder for US fans to get into something most of them can't understand.Death-T wrote:The script is ridiculously inaccurate, names and terminology are changed, the original music is replaced(unless you purchase those faulty season sets) and the voices and acting are terrible in my opinion. ... This, is a very deep ugly pit you're opening, just to let you know.
If I have to sum my argument down to one thing that I don't like in how they handled the series it would be respect. Changes to the script and visuals can be done to make the show appropriate for daytime American tv without making it childish. The choices that were made for adapting the characters did not show this kind of respect, in my mind. Little things, like shifting the dialouge from an actual discussion to "hey, did you see that nurse checking me out?" just build up endlessly and they drag the guys down.
And as a writer, I prefer the Japanese version and voices because that is what the creator of these characters saw when he made them. The English version is two different adaptations by two different voice casts and one company. Adaptations can be nice. But I prefer to see the one that is close to the original vision as possible.

Well, stuff I don't like about the dub...let me see...
-The fake widescreen
-"Krillin's in da house."
-"Great galaxies!"
-That it spawned the 9000 meme. TT_TT
-Freeza's dub voice making me think he was a woman when I first started
-"Your father was a brilliant scientist!"
-The pro-wrestler announcer voice. (Seriously, why?!)
-The dub opening theme
-Having stuff cut.
Most of the other stuff I can kinda laugh off cuz its been SO long.
Ironically, I like Mr. Schemmel's newer non-dbz work better. (Although he did do a really, really good job in Movie 12. )
I like Goku's Ocean VA's too, but I came into the show too late to have them be very memorable for me.

The music can be overwhelming at times, but when I watched the "uncut" episodes with the original music sometimes it just felt so out of place and didn't really fit the mood of the scene.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:The music is horrible, too.
I mean, they blast this techno beat, the same set of like four or five "songs" constantly. Not only do they replace the DBZ music, they replace SILENCE with it.

Ian Corlett, of Ocean, will always have a place in my heart as the first voice of Goku that I heard and thought was great. Also, Fusion Reborn (movie 12) is my favorite and I thought the acting was great especially when Vegeta disappears at the end.Chuquita wrote:Well, stuff I don't like about the dub...let me see...

Re: Why so much FUNimation hate?
1) I speak Japanese.SSJ2bardock wrote:Also, why do people prefer the Japanese version. Other than the fact that I don't speak Japanese, I don't like Goku being voiced by an actor with a feminine voice.
2) I like Goku's voice. I like almost everyone else's voices as well.
3) I like the music.
4) I like the script and terminology better.
5) The combination of the above four create an atmosphere that feels like a lighthearted martial arts adventure with a touch of toilet humor and magic. The FUNimation version creates an atmosphere of a hardcore "I-take-myself-too-seriously" martial arts brawl-fest with a touch of frog-throat and corny humor. I prefer the former.
However, if you like the FUNimation version, that's cool by me. I mean, despite all the censorship, I have a soft spot in my heart for FUNimation's first attempts at seasons 1 and 2 that used the Ocean cast. So, go ahead and enjoy your version. It's cool.
Just let me enjoy my version without interrogation.

They actually have a huge volume of songs. It was Ocean that only seemed to have 4 or 5. Though I liked their music as well as Funi's.Super Ghost Kamikaze wrote:The music is horrible, too.

No, no I'm not saying I hate the Japanese version, I just don't like Goku's voice. I liked the YYH dub, although Kuwabara can get annoying. I just can't see why people literally hate Funimation for changing the show to appeal more to the somewhat younger american audience.Super Sonic wrote:Some people just still hold grudges. Yeah. I think it had to be changed for the western audience, particularly for the people who aren't fanatical about it, but are instead just casual about it. The fact that its popular shows Funi must have done something right.SSJ2bardock wrote:I liked the YYH dub, although Kuwabara can get annoying. Exactly, try selling a Makankosappo to an American audience that it most likely between the ages of 9 and 12 and probably doesn't speak Japanese. Some of these changes were necessary for the show to thrive in the US.Kid Trunks wrote:Yeah. Because there were so many ways you could have done that and stayed true to the characters, and their choice wasn't one of those.SSJ2bardock wrote: I just can't see why people literally hate Funimation for changing the show to appeal more to the somewhat younger american audience.

It was expected in the 1990's, but now anymore. A good dub is one that has an accurate script, maitains accuracy to the original plot and characters, uses the original music and has good voices/acting. There are plenty of those kind of dubs today, in fact, most dubs are of this quality now. And no, it would not be difficult for American fans to follow. Translating the attack names is fine, but rewriting them is unecessisary and there's nothing complicated about a character name that an American fan can't follow. Whether or not the voices are good is a matter of opinion. It's just a matter of preference.SSJ2bardock wrote:Things like that should be expected when changing the language, although some stuff is pretty bad, but I think the voice actors are good and I can't imagine somebody other than Sean Schemmel voicing Goku. I see what your saying and there were definetly things they could have done better, but they were essentialy changing the core audience from adults in Japan to children in the US so necessary changes had to be made.Velasa wrote:Because there were so many ways you could have done that and stayed true to the characters, and their choice wasn't one of those.SSJ2bardock wrote: I just can't see why people literally hate Funimation for changing the show to appeal more to the somewhat younger american audience.
