Goku's relationship with his former friends

I'm pretty sure it was 5 years in the manga, too. And I think it was just Goku not keeping in touch; Chi-Chi, Gohan and Goten all seem more the staying in touch type.

I just don't understand why Goku's friends don't make the effort as well. Yeah it's kind of a pain to go find Kame House in the middle of the ocean, but hey, they've all done it a bunch of times! (Although I do agree that Tenshinhan would fall out of the loop the easiest since he doesn't have a regular home as far as we know) Besides, how hard is it to pick up a phone!? Bulma could have called Goku/ChiChi.

I remember on the Funi dub I believe.... Videl pulling out a cellphone telling the others they all really need to invest in phones.

We know Roshi has a phone, - and I'm sure his bill for adult lines is huge! Also Capsule Corp certainly has a phone; and Chichi has such a blagger mouth that it is hard to believe she wouldn't stay in touch with her best friend Bulma!

Also if you think about it, Kami lives on an island in the middle of the ocean, but the Son family do not fair much better by living in a forest in the middle of nowhere.
Piccolo unless he is at Goku's place being forced to learn to drive, does not really have a permanent home... He is a nature loving guy, and lives in mountains. Tien also does not have a permanent home and moves from place to place with his little friend Chauztou.

All these people CAN fly, and so have no excuse from not meeting up. Surely they must want to spar with different people every now and then?

The only true excuses they could have for not meeting up is if they were in space somewhere, or all deep in training to kill one another.

As this is not the case, with the exemption of Vegeta. I have no idea!
"Ok, use your instincts Kakarott. Right or Left? (Hmmm... I'd have to say... left.) Good. Then I'm going right!" (Vegeta to Goku as they try to find their way to free the others inside Buu - Episode: The Innards of Buu)

So true. I mean, in Dragonball when they were apart for long periods of time, it made sense because the guys were always doing some serious training during this time. But in Dragonball Z it's just "Oh, did I forget to call you for the past five years? My bad!"

But I feel like during the seven years Goku is dead (between Cell and Buu) they all do a better job keeping in contact. Why is that? Is the Son family just so wrapped up in having Goku around (when he is around) that they just forget about everything else? Yeah Goku's excuse is that he's laid back and doesn't put much thought into these things, what's everyone elses? Goten and Trunks are best friends. Bulma and Chichi seem to become tight once Bulma joined the motherhood club. How can they just not talk?

I highly doubt they all stopped talking. At the very least Goten and Trunks kept in touch.

Well "Who is this, I seem to remember this face and boy from when I was a little teenage boy, but I don't know where I saw the face of heard the voice" look on Yamcha, Tenshinhan and Chiaotzu's faces in GT don't help the fact that the only time they see a long lost friend happily is on Dragonball but in Z and GT they either get pissed off or forget the person.

People scattered across the whole planet lose touch with each other.

Why is this surprising?

That shouldn't be a problem in this day and age; this forum is composed of people from all over the world. And if my friends could fly around the world in seconds, I'd be pretty pissed off if they didn't get off their butts and stop by every once and a while, even if I lived on the north pole or something :P
It's all GOOD

Hold it there. Dragonball isn't in this day and age. There doesn't seem to be an Internet at all, actually.

But at the same time their technology is ahead of ours when it comes to travel. Afterall, they have hover cars and planes that can come from little capsules. And since everyone is fairly tight with Bulma, shouldn't they be able to get them for cheap if not free?

They live on opposite sides of the planet...... even being able to fly to each others houses, it's normal the lose contact with each other with time.

I don't get why people think goku didn't care about them.

I don't see some of my friends for years and that doesn't mean I don't care about them. It just means we took different paths and we don't see each other that often.

Yeah, I didn't like that either, but I guess this (and the five years between DB and DBZ) set the presidence for that 100 years of no contact.

I always got the impression that while Goku cares for his family and friends and doesn't want any harm to come of them, it just seemed like they were only a marginal step up from any regular person he wanted to protect.

And in the dub of the final episode of Z, after Goku leaves with Uub, Piccolo says "He looked happy to me. More so than in a long time". That seems to say a lot about how Goku feels about his friends or family. He loves fighting more than them. Does he say anything like that in the original?

On page 228 Kanzenban, and 242 of the original volumes:

Piccolo says:

Bubble One:
Hisashiburi ni Mitana

Bubble Two:
Anna Ureshisou na Goku wa

Which basically translates to "It's been along time since Goku has been so happy". As far as the anime goes I'm not sure, but I imagine the line was kept in there. I really like this line because Piccolo calls him Goku, which happens very rarely. So to answer your question Kid Trunks, yes he does.
