It could be someone actually working inside the store.

Think... If they work there and make some really juicy bootleg copies, they could probably just trade them in with their collaegues and make a nice big profit whilst selling them to the unsuspecting customers.

I know what you mean about scanning the barcodes, Over here in the UK the game stores and movie rental places are all like that. I suppose they could blag it and say it is an import, but if they work in store who knows how many shortcuts they take.
They will just get their buddies to sign them in or whatever, and then make with the cash!

Could be wrong, Probably am... But its certainly worth reporting, if one store gets away with it, your damn guaranteed the others will all follow suit.

Yeah, I suppose that's a possibility, but I was speaking from a customer point of view. :P

This is seriously why we should just walk away from the situation. It's not like Funimation, Toei, and Akira Toriyama, don't make enough money on Dragonball merchandise as it already is.
The Anime industry in North America needs all the cash it can get. I wouldn't stand for bootlegs being sold in professional retail chains that are supposed to know better.
I am pretty sure that Funimation makes enough money on DBZ alone to pay for all the other crappy anime (besides Shin-Chan) to stay in the business. I hoenstly wouldn't care if they lost all the rights to all other anime, just as long as DBZ stayed. Let's face it, anime sucks.

The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

How do stores even sell bootlegs? Don't legitimate items all have some kind of barcode that needs to be scanned? I know a lot of bootlegs have some kind of barcodes, but how would they even register?

Some of them have proof of purchase bar codes. I hate admitting this, a couple years back I bought those blue boxes without knowing they were fake.

I just checked my local FYE and it was bootleg free! They had a good selection of old and new Dragonball DVD's and manga though, that was nice to see that they are still made available. To all who have store's with bootlegs, i wish you good luck on reporting them and getting the bootlegs out of this country!

Yeah, seems my FYE is bootleg free (and as overpriced as ever) when it comes to Dragonball. All they had were used DBGT releases and new copies of the season sets going for $50 (on sale from $80).

At my FYE over here on the West, DBZ season 5 is 40$ and the other seasons are 35$ or 30$. I guess we're pretty lucky.

...at my local Wal-Mart the season sets range from about $40 to $30...

My local FYE actually has DragonBall stuff cheaper than normal. They've got the GT boxes for like $37 each. I grabbed the Pioneer Tree of Might last time I was there for about $10.

Well, we now all know that the reason America's economy is slowly going down the tubes is because our FYE's can't be consistent in their prices. :P

Funny thing is that at my Wal-Mart Season 5 is going for like $28 and Season 4 is going for around $34.

I figure that I'll just stick to my master plan of staying a season or two behind the current release and getting them at a discount on Amazon, then turn around and buy the Dragonbox singles that contain my favorite episodes from each American "Season" over at amazon.jp or PlayAsia.

And, well, for optimal enjoyment of the Dragonball story, I'll just read a random manga volume because the anime's boring and drawn-out most of the time and I only get the DVDs to play something in the background while I train or sit on the computer.

My FYE sucks, everything is overpriced. When I was 13 I bought the original Pioneer Dead Zone in it's card board/DVD case for I think 30 or 40 dollars.
I wouldn't go that far. Funimation has some other good titles.

Everything I've seen or took glances at, were mental retardation. Even the Lupin "movies" they have, horrible, and besides DBZ I like Lupin a lot. So I dunno where you get this Anime rocks theory.

Like I said, from my point of view, they have a lot of good titles out. I don't know where that strawman at the end of your post comes from. I'm glad Funi does something other than DBZ, it's allowed them the chance to grow as a company.

I hope it also allows them a chance to practice releasing quality anime dubs, but they are getting better so I think it is.

Sun_Wukong wrote:FYE is a HUGE rip off, not once have I seen a DVD that isnt sold for retail price. I mean at least Suncoast is reasonable with their prices.
1. It isn't a rip-off to sell for the SRP.
2. When a DVD first comes out, it usually is at a discount. At least at my FYE, I can usually get a new DVD for $15 or so, and the DBZ sets go for $30-40 (dependent upon what factors, I do not know) instead of the $50 SRP. I know these aren't quite Walmart prices or anything, but a deal's a deal. I don't buy videogames there, because my mall has 3 Gamestops and I can usually do better by taking a stroll.

Though, I wonder if it could be because my FYE IS an FYE? Another local mall has a far shittier FYE with jacked up prices, poor sales, and a selection that isn't terrible but isn't great either. But that FYE used to be part of the same chain as Suncoast I think, and they bought it out.

It's kind of like going into a bright GameStop and knowing it was a Funco Land, or one of those kid-friendly looking mini ones and knowing it was an EBX (or EB Kids). And sometimes you go into a store and know it was always a GameStop, and it seems to be the most "true" expression of what they try to do, simply because it was designed as such and not shoehorned into another company's space. Maybe the same happens with FYE for some reason, and the "converted" stores just don't see as much attention? I dunno.

PS- The bootleg thing could easily happen if someone ignored the rules. I sold a bootleg one time, a long time ago, to a GameStop. Don't shoot me. Basically what should happen is they scan it, it doesn't come off, they hand it back to you. But some workers, either trying to be customer friendly or maybe cuz they know the seller, may manually enter it (i.e, see DBZ box 1, look up the S1 set and enter it as such).
To show my appreciation, I'll only beat them half to death.
