DragonballZ Rewatch, Week 420 - Dragonball Evolution (April Fool)

Yo! Welcome to week 420 of the first DBZ rewatch of the decade.
We're doing five episodes a week, and we'll be watching every single episode of DragonballZ and DragonballSuper. All 284 episodes. Plus the movies. We also decided to add the spinoffs (except the first Dragonball ) due to popular demand.
I encourage you all to watch the Crunchyroll dub so you don't have to hear Grandma Goku or Wolverine Piccolo or that fucking boring Japanese music.

Alright, now that we've finished prooving how shit GT was and how much Super is superior to it, let's take a dive into the best piece of DragonballZ media, Evolution. When will we finally end this rewatch? Who knows. More importantly, who the fuck cares?

Previous thread: Week 419 (GT 62-64 + A Hero's Legacy)
Next thread: Week 421 (AF 1-5)

Anyway, without further ado...

Movie 14 - Dragonball Evolution
Originally released 10th of April 2009
Written by: Ben Ramsey and James Wong
Director: James Wong

Dragonball Evolution is a 2009 American live-action film adaptation of the Dragon Ball franchise produced by 20th Century Fox. The story centers around the adventures of the lead character, Goku, on his 18th birthday. The film began development in 2002, and was directed by James Wong and produced by Stephen Chow. It was released in Japan on March 13, 2009, in the United Kingdom on April 8, 2009 and in North America on April 10, 2009. Actor Justin Chatwin was cast as Goku, and James Marsters portrays Lord Piccolo, the antagonist of the film. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray July 24, 2009 for the Asian market, and on July 28, 2009 for North America and Europe.[2] It had a budget of $30 million and made just under $55m globally, meaning it made about $25m (not counting marketing expenses or the cut the cinemas / China take, so it probably didn't earn very much at all).

The events depicted in the movie take place in a dimension separate from the main timeline.[3] Obviously.

Let's not forget the Evolution sequel, which we all know is going to be the best movie in the history of ever, because not only is it a sequel to James Wong's masterpiece, but Steven Spielberg has been brought in to direct some reshoots, what could possibly go wrong?

Happy April 1st everyone.

I've never been able to sit through this dumpfire more than once. Not even as an ironic consumption, with substances and all, it is just that sad. And I've enjoyed Manos: The Hands of Fate, and Touch of Satan...

Goku going to high school, the complete mess of the ohzaru, Piccolo looking like a Joss Whedon villain-of-the-week, the awful production, the final fight taking place on a 2002 videogame stage, there's another fighting scene that looks like it belongs to Mortal Kombat. The gi looks like something Scorpion would wear, it can't be that hard to get Goku's gi right.
Also, casting asians only for the secondary roles... nice.

And the budget was only 30 millions dollars.

Agreed, I don't feel the need to ever watch this movie ever again. That said, there were a few ideas I rather liked about it:
  • Having some time with Goku and Gohan before the latter dies was really nice. As far as I can recall we've never actually gotten scenes like this outside of brief flashbacks, and even then they're usually slides. The opening training (while shot by a madman) does a lot to establish their connection.
  • Goku beating the bullies without throwing a single punch is probably the most Dragon Ball thing in the entire movie. It's a fantastic idea to show that Goku is so far above these guys (although I could have done without the Peter Parker smack talk), and it's probably the best fight in the movie.
  • Gohan using Nyoi-bo was also really cool. It's super-brief, but him using the staff to deflect Mai's shurikens was a great way at showing his martial arts prowess. It also makes it more meaningful that Goku takes it with him, moreso than in the manga because this connection is only stated verbally in a single panel.
  • The secret training area being taken over by amateur high-school kung-fu practitioners (and Chi-Chi) was a great gag.
  • I felt the movie did a much better job at establishing Chi-Chi as a martial artist than the manga and anime have. The locker scene is a good bit of foreshadowing her interest in it, she gets a cool fight scene against Mai, and the lighting the torches scene is actually my favourite in the movie. They both know they like each other, she aids Goku's training with her own knowledge, and she has much better agency in the scene and their relationship compared to the manga. The movie ending on Goku and Chi-Chi sparring was also really cool: rather than ending on them making out, it's them starting a sparring match, which means far more to both of them. It's not handled perfectly of course, but I can see a differently-shot and performed version of that making a lovely ending to an episode or movie.

The draft script (which I also plan to never read again) also featured a few interesting things; primarily, the way Roshi is written is honestly good throughout, and his first scene as a whole is rather good, with him basically reading like some combination of various incarnations of the Doctor, and Dumbledore.

I also liked that they combined the Mt. Frypan and Oolong stories (albeit really badly and clunkily in this instance); it's a pretty neat way of shortening the Pilaf story.

In basically every other respect though, the draft script is worse than the finished film, and the finished film is already pretty bad... But I kinda wish they'd filmed that script, because then the movie would be even more batshit insane, and may be worthy of "so bad it's good"
We're talking about a script in which Emperor Pilaf has an army of robot ninjas who brutally and bloodily murder a village full of people and then a priest in a church tells Goku to press a button under a Buddha's head next to a crucifix to open a secret compartment where he finds a Dragon Ball and a map to Roshi's island, and then later the gang encounter a version of Oolong that feels like the monster from an unlicensed, legally distinct movie version of Stephen King's IT.
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

Oh yeah, it's nice to see Goku and Gohan together, we've only gotten the beautiful encounter at Uranai Baba's, but nothing from when he was alive. I wish there was some short manga like Jaco's about those two doing stuff in Mt. Paozu. Funny that non-dead Son Gohan got more screentime from Hollywood than from Toriyama or Toei.

Something that my memory stored as cool is Yamcha. Maybe I'm being fooled by my brain, but I recall him being quite enjoyable.

HAH! Hard no on that one. It's a celebrity singer doing a REALLY bad version of Funimation's Yamcha? Y'know how people call him Surfer Yamcha? Evolution's version cranks that up to 11 and never, EVER lets go.

Things I liked about the movie

Combining the first arc with the most Z esque arc of the original series was actually a smart choice.

Emmy Rossum may have tricked the world into thinking she can't act until Shameless came out 2 years later but making Bulma want fame was an improvement over a rich hot girl who throws herself at every attractive guy wanting to wish for a boyfriend

Having Roshi wear an anime girl tshirt and own a bikini mag is a good way to keep his libido and not have him be a sex offender.

I could be misremembering but I'm pretty sure the movie did reference chi. Something Funimation seemed physically incapable of doing, even in Dragon Ball Kai.

Yes, they frequently talk about Ki, and even explain what it is. Funimation has never even mentioned it. Ocean got there first with the Blue Water dub of GT in 2003, though. I think their dub of DB also talks about Ki, and I imagine Ocean Kai mentions it.

We noted this in triva. :)

Please people, READ OUR TRIVIA! We're joking about in the opening of our post but we legitimately spent four hours making sure our Trivia was right for both the movie and the leaked script! It's actually our third-longest set of Trivia, after End of Z and End of GT!

And to be clear, the leaked draft script is 100% real. You can find it yourself on Derek Padula's website.

I suffered the mental anguish of reading that entire monstrosity for this dumb idea. I hope you're all happy. :P

Surely that should be 2003. In the UK at least I remember watching it during the summer of 04 and it was well into its run by then. Not sure about YTV though.

As far as I remember OG Dragon Ball ran on Toonami UK from around September 2003 to November 2004.

It would be great if we could get some plot acknowledging this movie (just as Ben 10 acknowledges its live-action movie, in-universe). Even with the "alternate dimension" concept established, it's still dubious the existence of this movie. But I would very much like to see the characters from the series interacting with their counterparts from this movie.

This movie also makes Oozaru transformation a lot better, conceptually. An eclipse triggering the transformation was a clever idea and it eclipses the "simply looking at the Moon" basic one. I'm still on the belief that eclipse should do something to Saiyans in the series.

I was one of the only people who bothered to watch this movie in theaters, and at the time, I thought it was mostly just forgettable. Looking back though, yeah, it’s pretty awful.

To be absolutely fair, it’s not as bad as something like The Last Airbender, but that movie was at least somewhat ambitious, and tried to maintain the spirit of the source material. This is just a generic teen fantasy action movie from the 2000s. You can tell that Fox didn’t even see any potential in this, because they only spent $30 million on the production budget, and the marketing was almost non-existent.

I will say this though, I like Chow Yun-fat as Roshi, even if he looks nothing like the character, and was arguably a little too young at the time.
Yamcha's name isn't given in the movie until Goku says that Oozaru will kill him and the rest of the world.
Doesn’t he introduce himself as Yamcha when they first meet him?

Yeeeaaah.....this could've been so much better if they'd cared more and actually had put in the time and effort to market it correctly. As i've said before it's more or less a bland mid 00's action film to the point that if it didn't have the Dragon Ball name and characters would just be a forgotten obscurity (which for the most part it already is) and obviously had a bigger budget and push.
DB collection related goals as of now:

1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)

2.) Collect rest of manga

3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

The cast is made up of great actors, and manage to elevate a really bad film into something at least watchable.

Yamcha is probably my favorite character in the movie. I thought he was a lot of fun, and the actor was enjoying himself.

I was pleasantly surprised that they included as much of Roshi's lechery as they did. He was definitely watered down, but it was something at least. Maybe they would have gone further in a potential sequel.

I thought that the score was well done.

Overall, I don't think that the changes to the source material hurt the film. It could have been a hit regardless. The problem was laziness and a poor script.

...at least we sorta got Shameless out of it
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!
