Dragon Ball Z - Unfortunate name

Post by coola » Thu Apr 07, 2022 10:57 am

Quite few anime titles have Z at end of their titles: Dragon Ball Z, Mazinger Z, One Piece Film Z etc. Not to mention Z as symbol of Zorro. Unfortunately, since Russian invasion on Ukraine, Z will also be symbol under with Russians commited horrible crimes people like my grandparents witnessed, when Red Army "liberated" them :( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z_(military_symbol)

As good an excuse as any to finally drop the "Z" and simply treat those 444 episodes as one and the same series! (Which I've been doing privately for years already anyway)
Usually goes by "Kevtrev" elsewhere online.
Draws comics that may or may not have been inspired by Akira Toriyama's amazing manga-making skills.

That would be revisionist history, no? The fact of the matter is that the "Z" portion of the sanime was always marketed as such. I don't think that there's anything wrong with the letter "Z." I won't let terrible things that people did destroy a letter. If it were a symbol, sure--but not a letter or a color or something like that.

Yeah, I don't think Z's in products will be banned. It's not like people associate DBZ with the Russian army or anything.

It reminds me of the similar situation with the use of the swastika in Asia, for them it does not have the same meaning as it was given in the West.

Millions of people in Asia--including Japan--still use the swastika. I doubt TOEI (or anyone else) are worried about people thinking of Russia when they see the Latin alphabetical letter of "Z".

ftfy ;)

(I agree with your original post though; I'm just one of those crazy people who likes GT, and also the TV specials were really good imo...)
The point of Dragon Ball is to enjoy it. Never lose sight of that.

"Z" is a cool letter to use. They also could have done "Dragon Ball 2", or "New Dragon Ball", and I would have liked it.

Z is literally just a letter. Do you expect the rest of the world to just no longer use the letter Z?

The OP has a point. Letters are symbols, and like all symbols they can carry multiple meanings and represent multiple things. Someone mentioned the Swastika earlier, which is just one example.

Although, I doubt that it would be much of a problem in this particular case.

A symbol is a lot more specific than a letter.

Nobody is gonna associate the letter Z with anything but the letter Z

There are all types of symbols. Letters are one type.

And clearly the letter Z is associated with more than just the letter itself. Toriyama chose the letter because it represents finality. The Russian military probably had their own reasons, and the letter would go on to represent their actions as well.

On second thought, TC is right. I hope Mike takes notice and changes the name of this website to Kanenshuu.

To be honest, I'm half joking, the only thing that is talked about getting banned, at least in Poland, is that particular way Z is drawn. Not other Z in culture/media.
