Fact Checking: Why did Saban end relations with Funimation (Or viceversa)

Post by Cure Dragon 255 » Thu Apr 06, 2023 8:52 pm

What exactly made Saban end their venture with Funimation? The rumor that it was because the show flopped in syndication is a lie many still believe but we never actually got confirmation what made them end things with each other. It could be as simple as Syndication being a medium without future for the time being or it could be just Funimation ending things because they got cable now and didnt need Saban anymore. I know Kanzenshuu is THE place for fact checking and discussion so I came her to settle this once and for all.

Saban simply pulled out of the syndication business to focus on its acquisition of Fox Kids and the Fox Family Channel

Funimation also didn't need Saban anymore by that point, as their job was simply to get Dragon Ball Z it's timeslots. The show was already becoming a massive success by this point, getting better timeslots across all affiliates, being upgraded to one-hour, which was unheard of for anime pre-Pokemon boom. No doubt the reason Cartoon Network was eyeing up Dragon Ball Z was because they knew how well it was performing, Toonami undeniably brought it to an even wider audience, when they aired it 8 months later, but they didn't get the ball rolling, so to speak.

The Toonami guys sought out Dragon Ball because one or both were fans.
