I view Kai as a bridge between the classic and modern eras. It uses the same material from the classic era, but it's paced differently to get people into the modern era.
I also view it as experiment, can they get away with "recut and badly reanimate some scenes" and call it a day? (And some recuts in Saiyan Saga were terrible, Blooma mouth moving while not talking in episode 1, Chi Chi lying down out of nowhere in Kame House during fight with Saiyans) With Sailor Moon Crystal they couldn't do it, since original anime was so different from manga, but even then they threw some "fanservice" like keeping same VA for Usagi and intro for Eternal Movie had same lyrics as Classic - SuperS

I think they could've had they planned it out better and provided the team with time and an actual budget to get it done.

"Modern DB" is just a colloquial way of referring to the revival period that started in 2008 or 2013, depending on who you ask. I'm not sure that getting caught up in the linguistics/semantics of it all is very interesting analysis.
But if we're categorizing these periods, it's pretty clear to me that outside of maybe Toyotaro's manga, 2025 is the end of "modern". Whatever comes next will almost certainly mark a different era entirely and feel very different from the one we were just in.

What's really funny is that the last decade alone has seen 4 different "canon continuities" that all pick up from Buu's defeat.
First there were the Battle of God's and Resurrection F movies (which retconned both EoZ and GT's events away). They are no longer considered canon.
Then there was the Super anime which retold said movies, but now seems to have been retconned by Daima.
There's also Super's Manga that differs greatly from the anime in places. Obviously Daima makes this impossible too.
Then there's Daima itself which is canon until we're told otherwise.

Actual 20+ year game
This right here is insane. I remember the anticipation for Budokai 3 like it was yesterday.

Well I can categorically say that for me at least, a world in which Akira Toriyama is alive and one where he is not represent two distinct eras. Toyotaro is doing a good job of carrying the torch, but one of my favorite things about the past decade or so was the anticipation that out of no where a new project with Toriyama at the helm would be announced. This is now impossible. That’s going to sting for a while. It’s the end of an era and the start of a new one, no doubt. Knowing the forthcoming Super manga continuation will lack the magic touch certainly dampens my interest. Everything sort of reeks of glorified GT at this point.

I agree with what others said that "modern" is just to differentiate it from the original series run. Since it's not as modern anymore maybe calling it revival/renaissance period would work better. I've also heard it called the Twilight Years which could be fitting for the revival moving forward that won't have Toriyama's involvement. I'm excited to see the manga continue but it's not going to feel the same without Toriyama

. I still hope they had some discussions where Toriyama wanted the series to go next or at least a general idea how he wanted it to transition to EoZ.

Damn, 2015 was 10 years ago... That's hard to stomach.
Anyway, I agree, the term "modern Dragon Ball" doesn't make sense. It's like using "Modern Sonic" to refer to the design Sonic has had since 2008.
Just sit here and waste your precious time. When you want to do something, don't do it right away. Don't do it when you can. Read my posts instead. It's the only way to live a life without regrets.

It's true that modern does not fit Super anymore, now that Toriyama is gone, Rest in Peace, we can literally just call the Super and Daima era the Revival era, and whatever comes next is the Post-Toriyama era,

I agree the big hinge, even greater than the 20 years without new material, is Akira's passing. What's to come now is part of a whole new thing. I guess we can say we are still within the last rattles of that era because we are still waiting for the conclusion of one of the last stories Aki-chan took part in.

Toyotaro is firmly in the "maybe" zone for me.
I've fairly enjoyed most of the Super manga except for the Granolah arc, which I guess is a big deal as someone who has not remotely enjoyed any of the other non-Toriyama material. Perhaps that's because Toriyama was indeed a little more involved with the manga. If there's another story arc on the way and it's announced to be the final arc, I might as well check it out.
Outside of that one possibility, I have zero interest in the forthcoming era. Dragon Ball died for me when its creator did, and his absence will be felt regardless of whether he left any scraps or vague concepts behind for more initiatives.

It doesn't matter that it's no longer "modern"; what matter is its quality; which is low.

I am not sure I understand the point of the thread, maybe because English is not my first language but I guess the point is:
Dragon Ball GT ended in 1998 (it actually ended in november 1997 but Julie said 1998 because it was an aproximation). That old DB era (1984-1998) was very differnt from current world. Japan was in Showa-Heisei eras and japanese society has changed since then, and western society too.
Dragon Ball Super started in 2015. Then, the world was totally different than 1984-1998 world, so DBS was the new DB of (then) new world and pre-Super DB was old DB of old world. However, 2015 wordl is already old with 2025 perspective, so DBS is old.
If do you mind that. I agree about 1984-1998 was a different society with different moral values and this influenced old DB. Old DBZ anime has more blood than DB Kai/DBS (they censored blood in Raditz death or Vegeta's death by Freezer, and there were much more blood in DBZ than in DBS), 20th century DB hadn't female warriors in general terms (A-18 being exceptional, and Serippa and Zangya has brief apparitions), while Caulifla and Kale had a role in DBS. About sexual jokes, I only read DBS manga and I haven't watched the anime but I guess sexual jokes are less than 20th century DB, because they are perceived as more offensive now. I know there are a joke of Puar turning on a sexy girl to train Mutenroshi to control his urges, but I don't know more about sexual jokes in Super.
So yes, pre-Super looks like a different product than Super because some cultural values that have changed.
However, I don't think the world has notably changed since 2015 to 2025, so 2015 DBS could be released now by first without not being very different. I think DBs still reflects current society in the ways I explained.

Why are all you new people so confrontational about everything? Where are you coming from? How are you finding this place?
There's a clear trend happening, and I just don't get it. Is it the zoomer-exodus from social media, and they simply never had an online experience and home that wasn't entirely founded on hostility? It's not cool, it's not interesting, and it's not even really obnoxious -- it's just sad.

I apologize if my post was not clear enough, let me try to explain better: I started my original post with 1998 because that was the year that I (myself, an indivual fan) became a fan. I then subtracted ten years to see what the series was like in 1988 from where it was in 1998. Like the difference between Dragon Ball in 2025 and Dragon Ball in 2015, I felt like there was a very sizable difference between the two periods. So, that made me think: if the 'modern Dragon Ball' of 1998 could be so different from the 'modern Dragon Ball' of 1988, the idea that the 'modern Dragon Ball' of 2015 was the same as what it is in 2025 seems improper.
The point I ultimately wanted to make was that
things change and what was once 'new' will ultimately become as relatively 'old' as anything before it. I don't think staunchly cutting off what counts as 'old Dragon Ball' at 1997 (or 1998-1999, where Gokuu was appearing in Dr. Slump's second animated series) is feasible. In ither words, it's inevitable that 'old Dragon Ball' will not always only refer to series and films from the 1980s and 1990s.
I hope that makes more sense? I'm in the middle of a morning walk, so I'm hoping that my brain is working better lol

Oh, please, there wasn't need to apologize!! In any case thank you for explaining me. I understand now and it has all sense.
Dragon Ball's first manga chapters was published 41 years ago, they are old. In 2066, DBS would be 41 years old, so it will be strange to call it new DB then. It makes all sense. So there's no way to create a line to separate old from new DB.
I became a DB in 1997, so we have similar stories.
