No, its actually worse. Kaio ALREADY has the word King in it but in Japanese. So its king King King Kai. Ugh. At least Planeta Namekusei had the excuse of Brenda Nava not being able to correct it when an intern messed up.

Holy shit, the animation in these specials was a fucking war crime. Recession era Toei...
Yamcha: Do you remember the spell to release him - do you know all the words?
Bulma: Of course! I'm not gonna pull a Frieza and screw it up!
Master Roshi: Bulma, I think Frieza failed because he wore too many clothes!

Basically the same problem as Muten Roshi translated as Master Roshi.Yellow Flower King wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 6:26 pm No, its actually worse. Kaio ALREADY has the word King in it but in Japanese. Um yeah, Toei was definitely having major budget issues with their anime productions in the early to mid 2010’s, which is why One Piece in that era but especially DB Super’s animation early on looked so ass especially the Battle of Gods/Resurrection F retellings, aside from the rush to get the show to air with the delays and other things for the original non movie based material that came after.jjgp1112 wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 6:46 pm Holy shit, the animation in these specials was a fucking war crime. DB collection related goals as of now:
1.) Find decent priced copy of Dragon Box Z Vol. 4 (Done)
2.) Collect rest of manga
3.) Get rest of Daizenshuu (2-7)

It's not really a budget issue. It's a scheduling issue and a staff availability issue. Toei Animation takes on numerous projects at the same time and it leads to not having animators available to work on projects on short notice.SuperSaiyaManZ94 wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 8:37 pmUm yeah, Toei was definitely having major budget issues with their anime productions in the early to mid 2010’s, which is why One Piece in that era but especially DB Super’s animation early on looked so ass especially the Battle of Gods/Resurrection F retellings.jjgp1112 wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 6:46 pm Holy shit, the animation in these specials was a fucking war crime. Shida Naotoshi was the only good animator available to work on the special, if memory serves, and his cuts weren't very resource-draining, probably so that they wouldn't need to find a ton of in-between animators to tween his cuts for One Piece #590.
Post-moving into the new studio around 2018, scheduling of projects has grown much better at Toei Animation.

Yeah, like they were surely having problems with those things at the time when that era of One Piece was airing and Super was early into it’s run among others, i believe Sailor Moon Crystal was yet another one affected by those things animation wise which is why certain awful off model scenes had to be later corrected for the home releases.JulieYBM wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 8:44 pmIt's not really a budget issue. And do you know that cast lists are a thing? I mean, regardless he was the director of three anime series or not, he should've noticed that Dafnís Fernández already had a MAIN character through that list Toei gave him.
Not to mention that Garza also checks Doblaje Wiki from time to time and one of the admins is a close friend of his who regularly communicates with him and edits on Garza's works. So there's no chance he couldn't have known that Dafnís already had a character in that special.
A little too late but yeah, I've been officially active in Kanzenshuu for ten years

I meant that he didnt direct this, criticize the actual director.Tian wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 9:28 pmAnd do you know that cast lists are a thing? Luis Daniel Morales and Daniel Lacy directed the SECOND part of the special that was recorded in 2022 and premiered on ETC TV in 2023. Garza directed the FIRST part of the special that was recorded and premiered this year.
Not to mention that King Kai only speaks in the first part of the special, which was the one that Garza directed.
EDIT: Oh, there's also these dubbing credits from the special where they confirm Garza as the voice director and Luis Morales as the engineer:

Oh huh, I was under the impression that both parts of the special were dubbed into Spanish at the same time back around 2022, with the first part just being held back (at least, that what the Doblajes wiki had said until now).Tian wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 10:37 pmDid you even read the whole Wikia article?Yellow Flower King wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 10:21 pm I meant that he didnt direct this, criticize the actual director.

Are we thinking the same happened with the English dub here? Because Mike McFarland is credited as Roshi in the first part (and it sounds like him too), and as far as I'm aware he hasn't been in the booth for the past few years since his diagnosis.

The diagnosis was in January 2025, not years ago.wjbraden wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 11:57 pmBecause Mike McFarland is credited as Roshi in the first part (and it sounds like him too), and as far as I'm aware he hasn't been in the booth for the past few years since his diagnosis.
Based on the credits, it looks like the first 5/6 of the One Piece x Toriko episodes were dubbed into English alongside the One Piece dubs released in January and March 2025. They share the same writer (Clint Bickham), ADR Director (Emily Fajardo), and Toei Animation Inc staff. Episode 1102 is the most recent one to credit Mike McFarland as an ADR Director and the first with the new Toei credits, although McFarland is clearly still playing Buggy in episode 1116 (he's not part of the main cast, so is uncredited). Apparently Buggy was recast in the most recent batch, which was released a couple of weeks ago.

Ah ok, seems like it's been longer than that now. That timeline works out, but probably would've been one, if not the very last, things he recorded.LostTimeLord wrote: Sat Apr 04, 2026 12:17 pmThe diagnosis was in January 2025, not years ago.wjbraden wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 11:57 pmBecause Mike McFarland is credited as Roshi in the first part (and it sounds like him too), and as far as I'm aware he hasn't been in the booth for the past few years since his diagnosis.

Imagine getting together the resources to dub half a special, with a cast of a show that's been all but dead for over a decade, calling it a day, but then calling them back up 3 years later to finish things out. I know many Toriko characters share VAs for either OP or DBZ, but still, what a logistical nightmare for probably very little payoff.
Anyway, if they go to all this effort and still don't dub the rest of Toriko, I'm gonna laugh.

Speaking of Roshi, I found out that in Brazil, the second part of this collaboration special got redubbed in order to have consistency with the recently dubbed first part.wjbraden wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 11:57 pm Are we thinking the same happened with the English dub here? Both parts now feature Roshi's new voice actor (Carlos Castelhano) and Toriko's official voice actor (Diagelles Silva).
In the original dub of second part recorded in 2022, it was the last time Gileno Santoro voiced Roshi before he unfortunately passed away in 2023 and Toriko was voiced by Fabricio Vila Verde as a previsional casting since Toriko anime didn't get a Brazilian Portuguese dub until last year.

Yeah, something similar happened in the Brazilian dub of One Piece itself, where they redubbed Bon Clay's lines in earlier episodes for fidelity to later episodes/movies. I took a peak though, if you go to OP ep 590 in Netflix, they still have the old version there, so I guess they have no intention of inserting the rest of the specials into the series proper's page.Tian wrote: Sat Apr 04, 2026 7:10 pmSpeaking of Roshi, I found out that in Brazil, the second part of this collaboration special got redubbed in order to have consistency with the recently dubbed first part.wjbraden wrote: Fri Apr 03, 2026 11:57 pm Are we thinking the same happened with the English dub here? With that, I think I have everything properly documented now...much more time and brain power than I thought I'd ever use on something as mediocre as this!!
