Other Anime/Manga that Dragonball inspired.

Post by Ben Plante » Thu Aug 05, 2004 2:25 am

Reading various mangaka interviews, a lot of artists like Toriyama and DB in particular. So, what current manga do you feel was inspired by Dragonball?

I'll start with the obvious: One Piece. A very different concept, but the likeness between Goku and Luffy can't be ignored. OP also has the various villains similar to DB. Morgan. Buggy. Kuro. Creek/Krieg (Depending on the translation used). Arlong. Crocodile. Ener.

I also briefly thought Naruto... but I changed my mind. It's too different.

Others thoughts?

To increase the fascination within the drama, should the search for a new partner begin? If so, then head to the east. You will definitely meet the one who is waiting for you."

I'd definitely say Naruto (since Kishimoto-sensei said so himself!). Especially now that the Naruto manga just had a bunch of meaningless battles, everyone just keeps getting stronger and stronger, and the Sharingan has turned somewhat into a Super Saiyan-esque transformation, there's a very distinct likeness to Dragonball Z.

I'd also say Shaman King, because, like in Dragonball/Z/GT, the good guys always win, even when you didn't think they would. I should also point out how much I hate Shaman King, because every battle concerns the exact same layout of events.

YuGiOh... but moreso because of how important friendship is portrayed.

YuYu Hakuso is another exa-

Wait, you do know almost every Shonen manga relates to Dragonball in one way or another...

Some Naruto Manga spoilers ahead...

I meant like as a whole. Naruto and DB are both fighting mangas... and I know the fight between Naruto, Lee, Shikamaru, Kiba, Choji, and Neji, and the three Sand Nins versus the Sound Five was very much DB like, perhaps an homage, but taking both animes/mangas as a whole, Naruto seems to have a very different feel than DB/Z.

While I'm on the topic, based on that "Sakura, thank you" comment Sasuke made, I predict that he is still on the good side after all, and has a plan to take out Orochimaru.

Well, thing is, one of the bare basics of shounen manga is friendship, rivalry, etc. It's not exactly something that DB just inspired.

I'm pretty sure VegEX said something along the lines of "Anyone who doesn't realize that Dragon Ball and Naruto are the same story is blind" or something like that. After reading the chapters containing the preliminary battles in the Chuunin Selection Exam, I know exactly what he was talking about. I can only imagine how long those episodes dragged on.

I dunno. I guess I'm blind then, I get a totally different feeling out of the two.

I've already read that actually, Julian. I just not sure how it relates since I read it a while ago, and I'm too damn busy/lazy to read it again.

K, I read it again.

...

How cool must that have been the next day at school or whatever the day after Kuririn died for the first time, or how about Daimao killing Shen Long? People must've been going nuts! I wish I coulda been there. They need to like, kill Zoro or something in One Piece so I can experience the utter shock.

...

KILL ZORO!? What am I on!?!? :-P

Oh good, a reason to explain why I'm never on AIM or IRC anymore. SHITTY COMPUTER. You remember B-Kun, we discussed it.

Luckily in a few days My Dad's friends, who is inside the computer business as it were, is getting me a new comp very cheap. He claims it's the top of the line at the moment. Yay.

I'll be on then.

I'd never want Zoro dead. Robin... I could deal without Robin.

Nico Robin blows, man. She has no real personality, other than brooding and pessimism, and she had zero development.

My prediction is that she isn't a permanent crew member, like Coby.

Side Note: Bring back some older villains Oda! I know you don't favor death, but people like Kuro, Morgan, and Ener need to bite it!

I agree. They should have Arlong, or Jango, or somebody reappear or something.

Preferably before Luffy and Usopp kill each other at Water Seven.

Well, Jango did technically come back in the Manga (Anime too? Not familiar with it). He is a marine now though, so... not a very good villain choice. That's just my opinion though. Him and Fullbody seem like comic relief rather than villains.

I want Kuro. Maybe Creek too. Or Krieg, my Manga translation couldn't decide whether his name was Creek or Krieg. Creek seems to make more snese though.

Okay, I found the post. I didn't agree with him at first, since I had only read the American Jump releases, but I've been reading fan scanslations and I can totally see it now.

Krieg makes more sense to me, considering the emphasis he put on military might. It would be pronounced the same as the English "Creek" when said in German, too. What gets me, though, is those who confuse the German "i" and "e" vowel rules and start calling him "Don Kreig." "Crikey," indeed. :?
