Well, just compare those 2 caps of Goku first going SSJ in Movie 5. The DBOX one looks like there's a light patch of fog.

That's called grain, my friend. :p And it's certainly on the TV series.

Thing is, it's not noticeable on a TV.

Not the grain

The coloring. I don't know quite how to explain it.

I think what he means is slightly washed-out. Like, it looks right i nterms of detail; but the color just seems a little bit low.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
So what was wrong with the original funimation masters that made the picture look that different?

They messed with it when they created digi-betas.

So in the beginning, TOEI gave funimation the same quality prints they had, and both just kind of went their seperate routes?

What I want to know is. Why don't they all look like Movie 5? If they just ran the prints through a machine, what is it that made varying qualities from Movie 5's excellence to Season 2?

Mostly the state of the original film, probably. Just look at the shot of Vegeta and Goku from movie 6. Even the DragonBox was really bright, with the skintones and yellows on Vegeta's face barely distinguishable (not to mention that's a very fast-moving shot). The original material itself has as much to do with the results as the process does.

I'm no film or video expert, however I remember attending some sort of workshop, and upon entering I viewed before and after shots of various films, games, and shorts. In the before shot, taking as an example; a scene from The Matrix, there are no defects remained to be seen (from my point of view anyways) but then they replay the scene several more times afterwards, and with each replay a new layer of effects are applied. If I remember correctly, it pretty much consisted of several layers of color corrections, lighting adjustments, a light transparant fuzzy layer(think: transparent wax paper) a green tint and finally a few more layers of I-have-no-clue-what resulting what we saw in theaters.

So, I doubt the Dbox footage film masters originally had the 'foggy effect' that some prefer, and of which some do not, but instead an extensive(?) procedure of a 'meshing' of different filters and layers.

Hopefully that gave you some sort of minimal explanation as to why that 'foggy effect' is present.

See I just prefer the blue sky more than the green, whether or not that was the original intention or not. I do think Cooler is too blue however, and I would have liked it if they were able to keep the sky blue, but Cooler green.

Nice one Tanooki. I don't like the Blue. It's just not Namek. It's not a matter of intention here for me. Just rather...It doesn't look like Namek to me from that shot in the Double Feature.

Yeah but it's a Blue/Green. If not for the cloud coloring it wouldn't look too much different from a normal Earth Sky.

I see lots more green than blue. I might not even notice the blueness if it weren't contrasted against the Dbox screencap. Actually helps keep Cooler from blending in with the sky somewhat. Maybe that's just me, though.

No, I agree with you as well. But it would have been a little bit better (to me anyway) had Cooler been a tad greener.

o_O I dunno where you're getting it's green. That's a helluva shade of blue, man. Before even comparing it to the Dragon Box, right off the bat I saw that and wondered "Why is the sky blue? Namek is mostly associated with the color green."
