Well, Toei were the ones responsible for the Bardock special.

Kakkarott passed through space without a suit or anything, while taking the Boss Rabbit gang to the moon. Then again,, I guess Saiyans can hold their breath for a long time like someone mentioned above.
Kak became short of breath when beginning strenuous activity at Kami's lookout, cause of the air being so thin - implying that Saiyans need oxygen to breath.
I've read some mention before that maybe Bardock used his ki to form like a bubble around himself that traps oxygen. Brolli was shown doing something like that.
Just Saiyan...

Yet, he could both breathe, and scream, while being blasted away in space!
No more time for Daizex. Goodbye folks!

As Rocketman said, you wouldn't explode or boil upon being exposed to a vacuum. So a combination of ki manipulation and being able to hold your breath for a long time (both Vegeta and Goku have been shown to be able to hold their breath underwater longer than normal people, under normal conditions) could account for it, I guess.
I mean, let's say they can hold their breath longer than a normal person. Then let's say they keep a bubble of air with them using their ki. That might be able to double how long they could last up there.
There are other out there possibilities. We breath oxygen as part of a complex process for our cells to produce energy to perform their basic functions, right? If you could use your ki to give your cells power directly, theoretically would you need to breath? Maybe this is how Freeza's race survives in space.
I'm sure if I've got something wrong Rocketman can correct me.

Yes. The laws of thermodynamics come into play here - you can't get more or equal power out of something as you put in.

Ah thermodynamics and ki. How I've thought about that before.
But your cells don't need a great deal of energy. Theoretically these characters must have enough ki to power them, at least for a while? Oh, this is assuming ki doesn't come directly from your cells itself, by the way, otherwise that would very much be breaking thermodynamics.

Your cells need a
lot of energy (especially brain cells), that's why you breathe every second.

But only a small amount for each cell with each breath. But I suppose you're right, you'd be using up a lot of ki every second...seems impractical.
Edit: I mean, let's say you take a breath every second. How much potential energy can we create from a single breath? If a character like Freeza has the ki to blow up a planet and still have plenty to spare, they probably have enough ki to survive without air for a good while?

Freeza stated that Goku would not be able to survive in space, so Saiyans cannot breathe in space. The Bardock special is Toei's mistake, they screwed up on that one. Even though the manga was influenced from the special, we see in one of the ,anga panels that Bardock isn't that far from Planet Vegeta, so he could've still been able to breathe. Saiyans are made of tougher stuff than humans.

Bardock and Vegita, and Nappa weren't in space, they were in the atmosphere. It was high enough up that you could see the blackness of space all around them, but there was still enough air to breathe.
In vegita's case, alternately, perhaps the space pods gave them air to breathe, even when they weren't inside of them.
Goku held his breath on the way to the moon, which seems to have an atmosphere in Dragonworld. Notice all the bunnies that live there.

I say Saiyans can breathe space because they look like humans, but aren't human. So, they look like they can't breathe space, like a human, but they actually can.

It`s a valid in-universe explanation since its impossible to really know for sure how atmosferes are like and how that kind of thing works in Dragon World.
As far as we know in Dragon world perhaps its possible for sayans (and maybe even humans) to survive in space as long as they can hold their breath. It is completely ludacris in our world, but there is nothing to suggest that it wouldn`t be possible in Dragon world since the laws of the universe and physics are different, as we can conclude just because of the fact that in Dragon world its possible to explode the moon with very few consequences for Earth.
So its valid to assume that Bardock could still breathe because he was close to the planet.

What'chu talkin' bout B?
What would they breath in space? Space dust?
