Having something called Dragon Ball Kai coming out.

Something with a new name that isn't a video game or fanfic.

I want SSJ5.

Hahaha
I was often called Kai when I was in Australia because of their accent.
And yeah, of cource I'm going to tell you guys the datails just after the airing of the first episode.

BTW, I've got the larger image of the page.
I read the texts and it tells only the name of the show and no more in it.

Just for following the basics of how the cutting works for the flow, don't most of us know the series well enough that we'll get a pretty good idea how it turned out even without subs?

Betting on this being 90% of the forum's reaction.
If Toei did a cheap crop job like FUNi, they'll get none of my business personally. It was dumb when FUNimation did it, and it'd be absolutely idiotic and unforgivable if Toei does it.

Same opinion here, and if Toei did crop the series it is utter cheap and unforgivable. Calling it Dragonball Kai is kinda lame too, because it's nothing really "new"...

Of course, but with new dialogue, I'd want to know what the characters are saying just in case any new tidbits are added into the series. Maybe we'll find out that Vegeta wears pink boxers on the weekends.
Gohan: At least he doesn't have his sword out anymore.
Kuririn: Yeah, and your dad put his finger away too.

EDIT: Just to be clear, the screenshots below are from Orange Brick #1, not DBK.

In terms of what's captured on the frame, what's the difference between

Image

and

Image

What's the difference? It was stated before that Toei was drawing more frame onto the sides to make it true 16:9, but I'm seeing cropping here. I don't want to believe that Toei just cropped the frame. Is Goku closer in one frame than he is in the other? I don't know the anime well enough to tell the difference.

This right here tells me that they're flying toward the "camera" and that means I shouldn't be worried about copping:

So, can someone confirm it for me?

Thanks!

To quote Wasted Wisher:
Anyway, on to the topic at hand....it seems that TOEI is going to be re-drawing some scenes from Dragonball for broadcast on high-def tv. The touch-ups will include some re-done background art (most likely to broaden certain scenes for widescreen)
I thinks that Toei is going to draw more frame only for scenes that would lose something significant when cropped in 16:9, like a character face being cut, but scenes where all you lose is, for example, a small part of the top of a character hairs or a small part of theirs shoes, will simply be cropped.

Sounds indeed like the least costy and thus most logical way to do things seen from a business perspective...

When the movie of "Kyojin No Hoshi" was re-aired, it was done exactly the same way.

Well they really needed to give it its own name, to avoid any more confusion. And personally, I would prefer Dragon Ball Kai over Dragon Ball Z: Maximum or something like that.

So I've read 2 different things in regards to the opening song:

1. They are re-recording "Cha-la Head Cha-la" (unclear if it is Kageyama)
2. They are giving it a new opening song altogether.

If they are replacing "Cha-la Head cha-la", somehow it just won't be the same...

So basically, it looks even better than DBOX footage, has extended frames to restore anything significant lost by cropping, and is sanctioned by the people who produced the original film prints?

Even if it's cropped it's a heck out a lot better than FUNimation's release.

Wait. I'm not sure, but is that picture that someone posted under the article actually from the new "re-edited" series, or just from the Season 1 set? Because it looks exactly like the Season set. I don't know if it would be given the same colors as Dragon Box because it would be Blu-Ray which means more brightness (typically). All the dirt and whatnot would be removed but...it was also done on the Season Sets. If it turns out looking just like the Season sets, I will laugh my ass off and not feel so bad that I got cropped heads and feet.

But on a serious note, did they even finish releasing the Japanese singles? I don't think so. What would they do? Release old versions while a new version comes out at the same time? Seems weird. Hopefully they won't discontinue the singles.

Goes to show you. In Japan, they still care about Dragon Ball Z. They go through so much trouble, making a new TV Special, re-editing the series, re-recording stuff, etc. In here, it's this cartoon from the mid 90's that nobody seems to care about anymore (except obviously for the fans online). Then again, I mean it is a really old show. Part of me just wants them to stop trying to do things to bring it back into the mainstream. Part of me is envious that Japan gets the Special release and the new refreshed "Dragon Ball Kai" (I think the logo looks bad, but whatever), and then part of me is glad that I just have the old grainy 4:3 series (because that's how it originally was, remember Dragon Box is also Remastered) and I'm happy with that. In my mind the show will always exist the way I was exposed to it, not in Widescreen and not with all this great audio and all that. May sound like I'm ignorant or something, but I just don't see why they are trying to push DBZ onto people. What about Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball GT? Will they get the same treatment? Why is Z the one that is Widescreen (in both US and Japan might I add)?

Ohs well, questions and questions that I'll never know the answer to.

The very last things to come out are DB movies 1-3, and those come out March 13th. Every single other bit of the series has already come out as singles (minus the TV specials).

Then that's pretty cool I guess. Onward to new things. But I swear, if FUNimation just suddenly wakes up one day and decides to bring Dragon Ball "Kai" (sounds so weird) to the United States, which would mean paying even more money for the same show I've already got 3 versions of, I will hurt someone! lol I mean I have the Ocean dub of the first 2 seasons, I've got all the FUNimation Singles, and I got the Season stuff. If I have to spend even more money on this show, I'm going to lose my mind.

Anyone who has like all the DVDs ever wonder how much they could get for them if they put the entire thing up for auction on Ebay (not the Season Sets)? That's a fun thought.

I will blindly spend any price for a legit copy of this with subtitles(Yeah, I know how every episode goes, but I can say the same for Seinfeld, but how much fun would watching Seinfeld be essentially w no understandable dialogue?)

Until then, it's pretty much guaranteed something like an almost new Dragonball series will be fansubbed each week and we'll all be able to get our filthy paws on the episodes that way.

and of course FUNi will put this out, but probably not for a year or two when Blu-Ray becomes even more mainstream and when enough time has passed to warrant another release of the series.

"Of course FUNimation will put this out"?

It's not always the case where they actually have a choice.

This isn't like Dragon Box footage. It's a new product, and Toei will want to milk it for as much as they can get.

They'll probably somehow screw over the US consumers to combat "reverse importation". The usual stuff, like taking out the next episode previews and the new theme, or something. But I think that Toei's gonna want to get that revenue from the US and European markets.
