Dragon Ball: Evolution- Speculation and Discussion
Watching the Roshi vs Goku clip and...well, I was right.
It IS piss poor looking when it comes to the fighting. Goku's leap and Ki blast looked so terribly fake that they may as well have left the harness that was holding Chatwin up. Also the whole Matrix slowdown and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon leap effects? Can you say "overdone?"
The acting is pretty god awful, too. I would be fine with this is this were intended to be a B-movie, but this is trying to be a serious movie. I can't take Chatwin seriously at all. It's definitely like he's trying to be a generic superhero teen, as opposed to Goku. His explanation to Roshi about Gohan's death sounds like he's stumbling around, trying to remember his lines.
I did grin a bit at Roshi's line about Bulma finding his bikini magazine, though.
Since when did the Dragon Balls give Goku the same ability that Bardock had?
And Yamcha...ugh, he's basically a live-action, over the top version of FUNi's first interpretation of Yamcha (the whole surfer attitude).

Yeah, I know it's DBZ, but still...
I don't think this movie was ever meant to be "serious business". I blame fox for advertising it that way. An old interview James Wong says that he was making a fun family movie.
I noticed that some of these clips have swayed the "haters" but just as expected, Mister Flash Dude, gozar, and Tsukento still have negative opinions. I am just waiting for Drabucor or what ever to chime in with a "This looks lame" or something equally short.
Not that I am saying having a negative opinion is bad, it just seems like you guys always stand out to me as the "haters" on this board.
I'm still fairly positive about this movie. I think it will be decent. I am solely worried about the whole, Oozaru being permanent and blah blah stuff. I honestly don't care about the high school stuff anymore, as it appears to be completely unimportant. And I guess we can all breath a sigh of relief over Capsule Corporation, Bulma Briefs, and Roshi being a Pervert(well, enough for a family friendly film)

I'm surprised people had such high expectations. Even after all this time. It's a PG action movie based on Dragon Ball being targeted for children. What did you expect?
I completely respect your opinion, and I respect you. I enjoyed discussing this with you, even if I don't completely agree.

Dude if this movie is as entertaining as the first Mortal Kombat then I'll be happy.

My opinion hasn't changed because the things that initially pissed me off about the movie haven't changed, they've just been brought to life and in a few particular cases, amplified greater still. Character's backstories, personalities, and motivations are way off.omegacwa wrote:I noticed that some of these clips have swayed the "haters" but just as expected, Mister Flash Dude, gozar, and Tsukento still have negative opinions. Behavior is downplayed to accommodate families, meaning you get butchered at both ends- Any sexual behavior is too raunchy for kids and dinosaurs and animal people are too childish for parents, also contributing to the lack of a familiar Dragonball setting and iconic locations- Toriyama's particular architecture for cities, Kame House, the Budokai Arena... these places are sort of accounted for but so altered that they leave me devoid of any nostalgic thrill out of getting to see them.
Add to that the horrible acting, mediocre effects and dismissible music that's been shown off the last few weeks and I don't see what's happened that should sway my opinion.
With time and continued exposure, it seems to me like a lot of people have merely lowered their standards to look forward to a movie they expect to be bad. I'm not that sort of person.
I don't think anyone here has acted in incorrigible enough a manner as to deserve the label 'hater'- that should be reserved for the morons turning up elsewhere all over the internet, Caps Lock readied, 'OMG WTF Werez Krulin?111'...people here seem to be capable of expressing negative opinions succinctly, even if the pro-movie people disagree with what they're saying. No need to demonise those who aren't jumping for joy, is there?

No one else seems to have mentioned it, so I will...

Fully revealed Oozaru face in the new clips?
Also, seems like Dragonball Evolution is nursing a 1.6 out of 5 cumulative review score on Yahoo Japan after the premier event.

I actually sorta liked Master Roshi. The acting ranges from mediocre to almost unbearably corny at times, but I expected as much honestly. And it is Dragon Ball, so it isn't as noticeable. Roshi actually has more character than I thought he did. The trailers and descriptions seemed to imply that he was an all around serious character. The actual clips show that he is a pretty goofy dude, and it's even shown that he is a pervert. Granted, he doesn't ask Bulma for a Pafu Pafu, but that's not really necessary... As for Bulma, there is really nothing about her character that urks me. Her acting is fine and she doesn't do anything that really goes against her character imo.
Though Chatku might occasionally show some Goku-like qualities, he comes off as failure as Goku overall. On another note, I didn't really think the fighting and special effects look too bad.

Ah that's the first thing I thought too. The only positive thing I can say about the clips I've seen so far is I did enjoy most of the humor such as Chatku's hair springing back up or "DBE eh? That's a catchy name."Tsukento wrote:

I don't think Gohan would tell his grandson to eat dirt, but whatever FOX, do what you want to do.
I love the cliché "You rely too heavily on your external senses, True power comes from inside" lecture. OBVIOUS SARCASM
Gohan: At least he doesn't have his sword out anymore.
Kuririn: Yeah, and your dad put his finger away too.
