Madman GT season 1 in widescreen?

Post by onlyonelegend » Thu Apr 09, 2009 9:31 pm

This is a question to all the aussie boys but has anyone picked up the GT season 1 yet? I had a look at one at the shops yesterday (i was too stingy to buy it) and on the back the aspect ratio said it was in 16:9. Can anyone confirm this, or is it a shitty typo.

Also, the set is yellow, not green like the funi one. I personally think this was a good change as that ugly green was a fucked colour choice.

From what I know, the menus are 16:9.
For all the flack that FUNimation gets on this forum for their quote about DBZ, there's some modicum of truth to it: a 9-year-old is born every day. Or in some cases, "reborn". DBZ may be a kids' show, but it's been so close to so many hearts all over Japan, America, and quite possibly, even the world.
Madman's New Zealand site says it's 4:3, but it isn't out here until next month.

The product itself should be the same as the Australian version though. I...think.

You know, I find this to be interesting because I also feel like this:

At first people were upset that Dragon Ball Z was in Wide Screen. I mean like really upset. I know I was. I only had like 4 Dragon Ball Z box-sets when the Season Sets came out and pretty quickly I was so angry that it prompted me to get all of Dragon Ball, the rest of DBZ, all of GT, all the movies, and even the Ocean dub stuff within like a half a year time period.

NOW fast forward a couple of years later with GT coming out, people are wondering if it would get a Wide Screen release and I find myself kind of disappointed that it wasn't. Because well... I have GT already in 4:3. The quality of the Season Sets are nice, but nothing some color adjusting and sharpness adjusting on the TV wouldn't help. The openers and closers are nice, but Youtube works miracles if I ever really wanted to see/have them (download them from Youtube).

I don't have it yet. Still waiting for it to be posted. Most places online I looked at were listing some kind of delay up until yesterday.

On the back of several older FUNi DVDs, it claimed there was some form of nudity when no such things occurred in the episodes. My guess is that it was simply an error by using stats from another set of DVDs. :P

I've watched a couple eps (& the Goku Jr. special) of my GT season sets in 16:9 widescreen, thanks to VLC Player... Believe me, it looks just as bad as DBZ for the most part. Don't tempt me to post comparison caps. Be very glad GT wasn't cropped, the last thing consumers need for that series is another valid reason not to try it. If your computer has VLC Player and can play DVDs, see for yourself; awful IMHO.

I remember.

In any case, it'd be interesting to see if Madman went to the trouble of cropping when FUNi wouldn't.

I did the 16:9 cropping the day I got my GT Season 1. For some reason, it seemed like I was missing more than in the Z sets. So overall I'm glad they didn't crop it. I just wish they would've made the sets progressive like the Z ones... :/

The cropped Z ones are taken from a bigger original footage (which is why, like Kai, you gain stuff at the edges which wasn't in the 4:3). So if you crop the 4:3 of GT it would end up cutting out more.

I don't really need to play them on my comp. My HDTV has a built in DVD player and I actually zoomed it in so that it looked 16:9. Looked the same as Z lol Just what's the point of buying it if you already have them is my point. I already have them in 4:3, so really pointless. I just bought it to be a fan I guess.

I bought them for the English dub with Japanese BGM. I adore GT's BGM!

I guess, but it's so unusual. Because there's really no way to integrate the two. A dub fan is used to the dub music, but a purist would not watch the dub anyway. So really it's a weird release. Then again, GT's music was so bad, that even dub fans have to agree that the music was the worst thing since Goku's genius scientist father.

For some people it's the music that really keeps them away from the dub (in both Z and GT). I haven't tried it myself yet, but watching the dub with the original music might make it more tolerable for me. Something to try.

You see, I was watching Z with the original music and I was just sitting there watching, thinking to myself, "Well I might as well be watching the Japanese one." Showing the show for the first time to someone new with the original music might prevent them from becoming a dub hater to the fullest because it would feel like they captured the original (even though many would say they didn't). I actually liked the dub music of Z. But yeah, GT was disgusting. But again, to me it really feels like either I watch the dub, and used to it being a whole different feel, or watching the Japanese version. I think that the dub track with the music is kind of too little too late.

I agree that it matters very little nowadays but I personally enjoy this addition. The Japanese BGM added to the dub works wonders. The original score even helps with the dubbed Freeza saga stuff (for me anyway.)

English w/ Japanese BGM is infinitely better than English w/ Faulconer BGM for me, even though I like most of Faulconer's music by it self. There are only a few instances where I would rather listen to the English dialogue with American BGM.

(Ex. Before Goku transports Semi-Perfect Cell to King Kai's planet, when he gives his last goodbye to Gohan, the American music fits perfectly even though it was meant to be one of Trunks' themes originally. The Japanese music is so stupid in that part. But then the American music goes back to being retarded when Cell starts to blow up, time to switch back to Kikuchi...)

One part that I absolutely love in the dub is when Gohan finally achieves his "Mystic" or "Ultimate" or whatever you want to call it form. You know, when he's powering up and blowing everything away. I think that the American version was great in that moment. Then I switched the audio to Japanese and...it was like circus music with really annoying and obnoxious screaming. What was supposed to be a powerful moment feels childish in the Japanese version. But I think the dub is great for it.

I actually made a Widescreen GT "Season 1" picture. Now granted I made it blurry and changed the color a little bit, but I did that to somewhat make fun of the Z Season Sets.

You're right that hardcore rockin' techno synth music was totally x-treme and hardcore brah. By the way do you have a ladder?

No you're right. A show that has bloody fights, epic stakes, worlds at stake, death, and gore should have light easy-listening music... Oh yeah, and circus music for when one of the main characters achieves a form that will save the universe from certain destruction. You're right. How could I possibly like that dub music?

I know that purists see the hardcore action cartoon aspect of the Dragon Ball anime as being a FUNimation "thing", but would we please wake up and realize that it's what it was? Dragon Ball was a mystical adventurous (no pun intended) comedy, but Z was on a much grander and more epic scale. Geez.
