Faulconer's Buu Theme/S.O.A.D.'s "Marmalade"
Hey guys. Firstly, I apologize for the acronym... For those not in the know, S.O.A.D. is System of a Down, an American nu-metal band that's been around since the '90s. I don't know if this has been brought up in the past... do delete if it has been... but I wanted to know... why do these two songs sound almost identical? I first discovered this when one of my closest friends told me about it back in '04. I believe that most of you might have heard of this somewhere, as well. Also of note is that "Marmalade" by System of a Down was recorded in the late '90s... (1997, I believe)
Here's a video demonstrating the resemblance between the two musical compositions:

My theories are that:
1. Bruce Faulconer asked permission from S.O.A.D. to create a variant of "Marmalade" for use in the FUNimation dub of Dragon Ball Z.
2. Bruce Faulconer "stole" bits of the melody from "Marmalade"...
3. Just a coincidence.
I thought it would be interesting to bring up. It would be cool if Scott Morgan would be kind enough to resolve this, since he used to work for Bruce Faulconer. (If Scott Morgan quit composing before the series ended its airing in America, then I deeply apologize for the confusion.)

Just thought I'd show you that.

I had already left the studio at that point so I don't really know the story behind the tune. Anyway I don't think Faulconer or Mike had ever listened to System of a Down at that point. Maybe Mike had, which would mean more than Bruce having heard it.
One thing I would believe is if Evan Jones from FUnimation had sent that track as an example and the music was composed based on that. Evan is the one behind all those bands in the movies.

Wow! Finally, one of these from the dub!
More than likely, it's a coincedence though, since the resemblence isn't exact, unlike some of the others.
Oh, and just a quick correction. This is actually Super Buu's Theme, not Kid Buu's. Chibi Buu has his own theme in the dub.

I've heard some pretty strikingly similar tracks that I know were by chance....some of them I wrote myself and later heard stuff that sounded exactly the same to my dismay... Sometimes its just a matter of who gets published\known first rather than who invented what.omegacwa wrote:Personally I believe they are far to similar to be "just a coincidence". But it is a cool find for sure.

This just further proves my theory that all music has already been written.cRookie_Monster wrote:I've heard some pretty strikingly similar tracks that I know were by chance....some of them I wrote myself and later heard stuff that sounded exactly the same to my dismay... If you only take into account equal tempered pitch and rhythm you might not be too far off.omegacwa wrote:This just further proves my theory that all music has already been written.cRookie_Monster wrote:I've heard some pretty strikingly similar tracks that I know were by chance....some of them I wrote myself and later heard stuff that sounded exactly the same to my dismay... But the areas of microtonal music, orchestration, timbre, sound design, etc are going to give you trouble with that one. There's a lot left to explore.
Then there's the whole idea of variable\interactive music. So much innovation we can do there as well.
