I'm being 100 percent serious. I find the word "retard" extremely offensive, especially when used in this context. That 'joke' was really in poor taste, though I wonder if such a word was the literal translation, or an interpretation by the translator.

Kunzait said that he saw similar subs back in the days of fansubs, which means it's possible that these are accurate, but AnimeLabs, or who ever, used to make things seem a little extreme...

Also, jokes in Dragon Ball are usually in bad taste anyway, since they're poop, fart, toilet jokes or bad puns.

Gohan calls Boo a "Usunoro" (薄鈍 or うすのろ). It literally translates as fool, halfwit or simpleton I believe, but with a harsher meaning than Baka (馬鹿 or ばか) or Aho (阿呆 or あほ). So, without going all AnimeLabs, "retard" is a good approximation in English.

Honestly, if that offends you, you shouldn't be watching DragonBall. It was always a show that had somewhat childish (and therefore sometimes un-PC) humor.

Edit: If you unwrapped the set, good luck returning it BTW. Most stores will only exchange opened DVD's/CD's for the exact same product as a safeguard against piracy.

Someone should release the AnimeLabs subtitles if they've got them... they just about changed the story!

Its a bit different there.

1. The term retard was not used.

2. It does not have the negative connotations it does in this country. Where it has become a pejorative term and is very hurtful of the mentally disabled. Maybe I'm wrong, does Japan have the problems of the handicap being degraded that exist in this country?

Surely something like fool or idiot could of been used in its place.

It gets under my skin when someone says "PC" anytime someone is offended by something.

Maybe this is coming from a standpoint of how it would seem in English, but someone like Buu is more likely to be offended by being called a retard than a fool.

I could say the same thing for words such as "kusou" and "Shimatta" being translated as "Darn it" or "Oh No" instead of being translated to words like "D*mmit" or "Oh Sh*t". I'm not offended by it being in the subtitles. It was the comment I initially responded to that bugged me.
