Goku's Japanese voice, anyone else not like it at all?

I don't get the big deal with Goku being voiced by a woman. Speaking as a dubbie here, Nozawa's an excellent Goku. Her portrayal doesn't seem "feminine" in the least.

I don't have a real problem with Schemmel either, aside from his poor acting in season 3. I don't think I could fault him for the cliche superhero "Ally to good" stuff, his superiors probably directed him in that regard.

What the hell were you listening to? The US dub pronounces those as "go (as in the word 'go')-ku", "kakar-rot (the word rot)" and "pickle-oh".
No, the pronounciation is clearly wrong. The o in all these names should be pronounced like the "aw" in "law".

No, it shouldn't.

Sure it should. Turn on the Japanese track on your DVDs and listen to Goku's name being pronounced. There's no w-sound between the o and k there. There's a very very clear one in the dub.

So what you're saying is that "Goku" should be pronounced "Gaw-kew"...?

I always pronounced it, GO Koo. As in the word GO, like I am going somewhere, and coo, like poo but with a K instead of P.

As for Ms. Nozawa, she is great, and really is Goku, I like the voice a lot, to me it doesn't sound like a woman or a kid, it sounds completely unique, and I think that makes the voice special.

As for English dub, my favorite is Peter Kelamis, especially for The World's Strongest Ocean Dub. He really was the epitome of what an English Goku should sound like in that movie.

Somewhat like that, yeah.

And really, if there supposedly isn't any difference, how are so many people capable of hearing it then?:P

... O's in Japanese are pronounced like O. Not unlike owe, but without the slight drawl at the end... If it was to be pronounced "Gaw-kew" it would be more like Gaku. Their a's sound is like "Aw" without the drawl. Their U sound likes "u" (no Ya sound at the beginning), but with no drawl at the end...

Kakkarot should be pronounced more along the lines of "Cock A rote".

What a splendid reply. :P

Anyway, Nozawa...never really grabbed me with her adult Goku. To me, when I hear his voice, I hear an old women. Not a child that hasn't grown up.

However, I LOVE her child Goku/Gohan/Goten.

Yes, that's what I was trying to say. This "Phonetical English" system makes so little sense it's impossible to make a point using it.

It should be pronounced the way it's pronounced in japanese. It should not be pronounced the way it's pronounced in the English dub. There's a very noticable difference between the two, and I can't for the life of me understand how some people here can't hear it.

The difference is slight at best. The pronunciations are close enough, but should they really take the extra effort to try to pronounce names without the slight drawl that American English has?

Absolutely. Mispronounciated names makes your dub come off as pretty unprofessional (and I wouldn't say it's a "slight" drawl either - it's extremely noticable they're pronouncing the name wrong).

I mean, we got threads over in the video game forum making fun of the "Bootie-kye" mispronounciation. "Gowku" isn't any better.

Here's my opinion on Masako Nozawa as Son Goku:

Her approach to Goku is well...different. She screams great and all, but to me she's not Goku. I know I might get flamed, but I actually think that Sean Schemmel is a better Goku. Now I'm not saying she's the worst Goku ever as that is not the case that "honor" goes to whoever voiced him in the "Big Green" dub. Bottom line is Nozawa isn't bad as Goku just different.

In polite disagreement, considering her status as being the first Son Gokû should not it be the others considered 'different' or even the use of the phraseology of 'Nozawa being different from what we are use to'? In all fairness, of course...

Speaking of the Big Green Dub, he's pretty much the only Dub Goku I've ever gotten the superhero vibe from. I've never understood why people say that Goku's dub VA's sound like superheroes. I never ONCE got that kind of vibe from Sean Schemmel, Peter Kelamis, or Ian Corlett. Hell, not even Kirby Morrow.
