How did you start your collection?

I got into DB through the oldschool original FUNi dub of the Pilaf saga. When Z started later, I noticed the manga was up to book 24 (in French), so I picked it up. For the longest time, my collection was manga only. Then came VHS fansubs of the movies, and later DVDs to replace them when Pioneer and FUNimation came out with them. Along the way, I picked up a VHS of the French dub's first few episodes, thinking it was USSJ Vegeta vs Semi-Perfect Cell because of the VERY misleading box art. Only after 2000 did I pick up video games (GBA, later PS2 and PS1 re-releases) and action figures.

I bought figures from super battle collection long long time ago in Germany..... It was Son Goku, SSj Goku and SSj4 Goku. I was watching GT that time))))

Well, if you want to get technical, the very first Dragon Ball related thing I got was Krillin from the Burger King toys released back in 2000, when I was just getting into the series.

After that, my first video game was Budokai 2 which I got back in 2003. That was when I really started to collect merchandise for the series. The first DVD I got was A Hero's Legacy which was a present for my birthday back in 2005.

I'm a little lazy when it comes to collecting the series...well...actually....I'm more of a saver than a spender you might say. I only spend money when I know exactly what I want.

Crap load of action figures, Dragon Ball Z Budokai 1 and 3, Super Sonic Warriors 1 (2 was awful), Dragon Ball Z movies 7, 12, and 13, and then a couple of years later (around their release) the Dragon Ball Z (and GT) season sets.

Another "way" I started my collection that I didn't put in my first post of this thread was my subscription to Beckett DBZ Collector from 2002-2004. I was really into them, and it was the only way (Except for the Internet, and I didn't go to Daiizenshuu EX at the time) that I got my DBZ fix. I still have almost every one that I ever had in my possession. They were cool when I got them in the mail each month, but I keep them solely for reminiscence and nostalgia reasons.

Wow! Same here!!! Except I wasn't really able to find any more of those after a while, sadly.

I think I started my collection with a few number of various action figures, like a Goku & Vegeta Walkie Talkie set released by Irwin and those promotion toys that Burger King had back then. Ah, the nostalgia. And then I started trying to get every US-released Dragon Ball/Z/GT game... never really worked out. haha

Afterwards, I finally got to the point where I found out about Shonen Jump issues through my closest friends, and that's when my collection really started to skyrocket; and when I started collecting the DBZ CCG cards, that shit REALLY hit the roof!

It was funny, because at the time I got my first SJ issue (July 2003), I actually ordered a subscription online from their site back when I was 9.

I thought it was somewhat free and all (I chose Bill Me Later, because it looked like "Bill Me Never" to me. lmao), so I thought I would. Then, I got it in the mail one day, and showed it off to my mom. She was happy and all, and then asked how I got it. I showed her how, and she turned into an offspring-killing machine. My mom sent them a letter saying that it was an accident and they nicely gave us another free issue before cancelling our "subscription".

And then I remember that infamous (oh, and DO WANT THAT GAME) time when I "traded" my closest friends my July 2003 issue of Shonen Jump for a huge lot of kick-ass DBZ CCG cards. Again, the same story repeated, with me showing it off to my happy-for-a-while mom, her asking how I got them, and then the offspring-killing machine returning with a vengeance. My closest friends' mom was also pretty pissed. It was kinda stupid of my aunt to be pissed, because I was only 9 at the time, not to mention... are aunts even SUPPOSED to be pissed at their nephews? She's still a pretty big jerk to this day, though.

Whatever, I guess.

Anyway, I tried buying a Shonen Jump issue every month, but I found myself not being able to keep up with them because I started buying a crapload of other Dragon Ball merchandise. Everywhere from shirts to games to toys to books. And recently, I've been collecting the Dragon Ball Z FUNimation 4:3 Uncut "Saga" Box Sets released from like, 2001-2005. (Yeah, I've been mixing up the years that they were released a lot. It's kinda confusing, though, since a lot of them were released in '03, with a few like the Cell Games Saga and the Great Saiyaman Saga being released in 2004 and 2005. What the fudge?

) But yeah, that's my whole story. Good times, indeed.

With the first volume of the manga.

Then my first anime DVD were the three UK DVD releases, and my first American DVD was Dragon Ball Z Season One...

And the reason I got into DB again was because of Daizenshuu EX, the podcast sort of opened my eyes to how great it was being a fan, and how great Dragon Ball was. I was only a few volumes into DB at the time, and the Season Sets were coming out in the US, and I thought I should get them.

But for some reason my card wasn't hooked up to PayPal the right way and I ended up owing $130 for the sets, along with the Magic Knight Rayearth boxset.

What got me started was the original card board box Dead Zone DVD back in 99. After that I would occasionally get a few DVDs for christmas. Years later I sold my collection except for the Dead Zone, thinking I was done with DBZ. Two years later I got back into it, started buying a bunch of boo-3g sets(honestly I thought they were lidgit), then Funi slapped me in the face when they said they were releasing season sets, slapped us all again with widescreen none of the less. Since then I've been buying the bricks and blu-ray.

I collected a few of the Ultimate Battle action figures, I have #1 Son Goku, and Goku in his blu gi. I have a PVC collection of the Shenron, and the DB gang sit on top of it except Goku who's on Nimbus.

DBZ Season 1 and 2 together, 2 had come out that day, and then Rayearth.

I think I bought something else too, I can't remember, maybe Penn & Teller: Bullshit Season 1, South Park Season 1, I dunno.

The 2nd volume of DB. I was looking at it at one of the bookstores at the local mall, and originally left the store without it, but ended up changing my mind because 'I really really DID want it' so I turned around and went back to buy it. (This was back sometime in 2000; there were barely any volumes out yet and I thought volume 2 would have Kuririn and Launch in it, and while I was wrong, I didn't care because I'd never seen anything like it (manga) and it was awesome.

Eventually I ended up just buying the books as Viz put them out. Near the end of Viz's first publications of it, I discovered the kanzenban at the NY Kinokuniya and flipped out in total surprise at the 'brand new ending' in the last kanzenban volume--one of the only recent new db-related things for me in recent memory that I found out about in person rather than over the internet.

This past Christmas I finished my kanzenban collection.

So, now I have one floor of one of my bookcases filled with kanzenban, and the other with Viz's translations. ^^;;

And yet my collection of the anime is really a random smattering of singles and a few movie boxsets. o_o

I know I'm picky, but I'm still waiting for a non-dabbled-with 4:3 release of the series. I can't purchase the bricks in good conscience when I have a sinking feeling that--given enough time--Funi will re-release the series in 4:3.

My collection started in 1998 (or 99, but I can't remember) when Santa brought the Saga of Goku tapes, the first Dragon Ball film, and the first Dragon Ball Z volume, Arrival. I remember being so excited and happy to get them. I haven't watched them in years, but they do, however, sit on a shelf in my closet collecting dust.

Hmm I think the first thing I ever bought were those old Dragon Ball figures. They had like the 2-inch miniature ones and then 3 larger ones of Goku (with a tale and power pole), Yamcha (with his sword), and Krillin (who had a button on his back that made him kick). Man, that was so long ago...I was like 12.
