Building a bridge is hard; it takes a lot of planning, designing, math, manpower, funding, and documentation. Swimming across the English Channel is hard; it takes a lot of training, endurance, preparation, and self-discipline. Playing an instrument is hard; it takes a lot of practice, study, dedication, and experience.

Voice acting is easy. All it takes is a little natural talent and a little imagination. Sure it may take a while to get a take just right, but in the grand scheme of things, voice acting is an easy career (for those who have that type of career, some just do it for some extra cash and for fun).

EXCUSE me!? As a voice actor myself, I kinda take offense to this. Only "kinda" because anyone who says it isn't hard clearly isn't in the buisness.
Oh, come off it. I do amateur voice acting on my own for fun. People tell me that I'm pretty good at it. Next to pooping it's probably one of the easiest things I do in my day-to-day.

Sarcasm will get you no where. Its not the end all be all...after all this is all opinion based. However it brings up the point that people, even kids, know what they want and have specific tastes. There is a reason Funimation's Dragonball took off faster than Ocean Dubs and that is because the kids had a preference. Regardless of your specific opinion(or mine) the general audience took to liking the FUNimation Cast just like the Japanese took to liking the original cast. If they had truly sucked...then Dragonball probably wouldn't have been as big as it has been(in America) and the fan base would still be a small group of people looking for bootlegged fansubs.
Sarcasm doesn't get me anywhere but it's fun as fuck, anyway back to business. As I said before the Funi dub isn't the only reason for the English version "taking off". See my previous posts where I list multiple other explanations as to why it could have garnered more popularity. Just because one of your friends didn't like Vegeta's voice and wittily called it "gay" isn't something to derail all my previous points. Just because DBZ became more marketable when Funi gained the rights doesn't mean jack. If anything it's a testament to the story getting a lot better during the actual Freeza battles. Not to mention DBZ fans were waiting forever for new episodes so when Funi finally got off their asses and released a season 3 it probably did get huge ratings because of the massive time delay between seasons.

Voice acting is a challenging industry, very competitive. Being able to constantly give the performances required to continue being hired is tasking, and admist the trials of the rest of life, I would dare say it's 'hard'.

I debated how blunt to be about what I'm about to say. Are you seriously going to tell me, as someone who has never even attempted voice acting, that it doesn't take training, endurance, preparation, and self-discipline? I was trained by Susan Berkeley, the voice of AT&T, and even SHE says that she's still working on improving her voice. Voice acting, like acting itself, is a craft in which you never stop learning. It's not like you can learn all the secrets one day and then you're set. I, like many voice actors, have sacrificed much to pursue this art. Money (to buy home recording equipment, make a professionally-produced demo, attend classes), time (all voice actors are ALWAYS looking for work because with a scant few exceptions it doesn't pay well, and I'm always checking my email for new audition notices), and willpower (it can really drain you mentally when you go a long time without getting a gig). Not to mention that you have to sacrifice time with your friends and family in order to keep getting your paychecks. Don't insult us by saying that we are sacrificing so much for something that's "easy."

It's also a very difficult form of acting because its all about the subtle touches, as opposed to the bigger changes you can make when you have your body to assist you in film and theatrical acting. I have yet to act for an anime, but I've tried it informally on my own time...I can tell ya, from INFORMAL training, it ain't easy. It's one thing to match lips, but to match lips AND make it sound convincing? Not easy, no matter how much time or how many takes are allotted to you.

So listen, Innagadadavida, I'm telling you this as politely as I know how: you have no clue what the hell you're talking about. Criticizing a voice actor's performance is perfectly fine. We welcome the feedback. What I and may voice actors would find insulting is people like you, who have no experience in the field, marching forward with the unbelievably insulting assumption that this business which you have not spent so much as a day in is "easy."

Anyway, I'm sorry I went off like that. I don't mean to sound angry or aggressive. I'm usually the one on internet message boards telling people to be calm and not to get so heated up. You did, however, strike a nerve. I'm telling you, as politely as I can, to shut up. Now.

I say it as somebody who has done voice acting. I've been doing small projects on my own for years. I love voice acting and I'm confident in my ability. But just because something takes practice doesn't mean it's hard. Sure there's a competitive field but that doesn't mean the act itself is hard. Basketball isn't hard but you'd have a difficult time playing against a team of NBA players. I'm not saying that it isn't tough to get into the NBA. I'm saying it isn't tough to play basketball.

So sorry I didn't take into account the industry of voice acting. You're right, I haven't spent a day in that career field. I was speaking strictly of the act itself. Which I stand by my statement. It isn't hard.

Now that that is out of the way, your outrage was a little embarrassing. Voice acting is just like any other competitive career field. Yeah, of course it's going to take dedication and perseverance. You can practice anything and get better, I never once doubted that fact. That doesn't make voice acting hard. It makes securing a position in that career field hard. That's two different things. And the latter of which is irrelevant in the topic at hand.

Actually they are quite average, from what I've heard. The money they earned from voice acting barely managed to pay the bills, so voice actors most of the time get part time jobs as a means to an end.

Chris Sabat at least must be rich though, since he was the voice director as well as voicing at least one third of the cast. He was one of the people running the show, that must count for something.
'Rich'? No, but somewhat well off. I don't know how much Okratron pulls in for him, either.

But I can't, that's how life is. Time is a bitch. The party is over. Kageyama, Kikuchi, and Maeda are off the sauce now; Yanami almost OD'd; Yamamoto got arrested; Toriyama's not going to light trash cans on fire and hang from the chandelier anymore. We can't get the band back together, and even if we could, everyone's either old, in poor health, or calmed way the fuck down. Best we're going to get, and are getting, is a party that's almost entirely devoid of the magic that made the original one so awesome that we even want more.

I actually think that the angry and aggressive scenes are his best stuff. SSJ3 and SSJ4 and especially the screaming, are all awesome.

Ok, So FUNimation sold Dragonball to the general public. That is established. They provided the voices the toys the games etc etc. Now weather you want to blame the success on the change in sagas or the fact that it was on Toonami then by all means go ahead but it takes all of the small things(including the Voice acting) to sell the whole picture. I can tell you right now, If I saw Ocean Dub's Cell saga I probably wouldn't have been the fan I am today.

That is only based off my own personal experience and mine aren't the same as everyone's. However, there is a reason FUNi's dub is the standard english Dub now a days. There is a reason(as far as I know...please correct me if I'm wrong) their dub is the standard for the video games. They have more passion for the series and they listen to their fans.

I mean listen, Do you honestly believe any other Dubbing company would have brought over the Dragonbox from Japan? Do you really think Ocean Group could pull that off and go out of their way to make the Subs the standard?

Funimation is probably the best dubbing group to bring Dragonball to America. I have yet to see any other company do better then they have when it comes to handling the series(aside from the original of course). Trust me if Ocean Group could do it then Funimation's in house dub wouldn't exist, would it?

Why are you catching feelings at the fact that he loves the dub?

Honestly I don't care, its all just personal taste. I just don't think FUNi gets from some people who call it a suck fest. When in reality they helped to make Dragonball Big in America. They are the reason so many kids from that time period have become not only fans of the series but of anime in general. They have grown so much since the being and they really work hard to please their fans(while making the most money of course lol).

There is also no denying that they have grown so much. I mean everyone uses season 3 as an attack on the DUB but if you look at everything as a whole they did a great job on the series.

just my 2 cents

Dude, as much as I like the FUNimation dub, I have to say that you are delusional.

FUNimation isn't the only anime dubbing company who releases "Special Edition" DVD releases of animes. In fact, it has become a norm among the industry.

Hell, if any other company like ADV or Bandai had Dragon Ball, then the Dragon Boxes would likely have been released years ago in the US... without the Season Set BS.

I'm not I just find it funny how he thinks Funimation made DBZ popular in America when any other company without their heads up their asses could have done it much better.

Just a typical unreasonable Funi knob bobber.
