Dragonball UK
Well obviously I'm really bummed and aware that England never gets any releases.
The problem I have is I want to watch the Blu-Ray films however my BluRay player is locked to my region and can't play US films.
It sucks and frankly I was wondering if you guys think there is ever a chance of the UK getting it's own release of any kind of Dragonball material other than the Big Green dub and the first three films.

To be honest, I don't ever see there ever being a DB release in England, which is such a huge shame. I heard that Manga Entertainment wanted to release the series over here, but it was too expensive buy...
Just another Dragon Ball fangirl in the world.
DB & Tiger and Bunny are my main fandoms, along with many other animes.

It's true we're neglected as a fan base. But I'm kind of used to it at this point. I own all the manga, and all of the series (though it'll be replaced when the Dragon Boxes arrive), so I've got my Dragonball fix. I'm just glad we get the games really.
To be frank, no, we'll never see a Dragonball release. If it was going to happen, it would've happened a long time again, there's simply not enough money to be made in putting out such a large release (508 episodes including DB,Z,GT) so late.

The reason FUNimation doesn't release their stuff in the UK is that they don't own the distribution rights for the UK. I recall reading that some company owns the rights for the entirety of Europe, so said company would be the reason nothing gets released. I'm curious why FUNimation doesn't make a deal with them to have that company release their DVDs and Blu-Rays in the UK, similar to how Madman Entertainment distributes Dragon Ball/Z/GT in Australia. Unless this happens though the only thing you can expect is the "Big Green" dub to maybe be rereleased on DVD or Blu-Ray.
Being a french company they probably have released stuff in France but none in the UK.JulieYBM wrote:As I understand, the AB Groupe owns the rights through all or most of Europe. This is the very AB Groupe that owns the rights to the Ocean dub of 108-276, GT, and DragonBall...so it makes one wonder why they haven't tried to get those out, but alas...who knows?
Don't see why they wouldn't though, I'm pretty sure Dragonball was popular here.
EDIT: Infact it would appear they are releasing there own season sets : http://www.ab-video.com/product_info.ph ... 643ef7289b

It has a DVD release already, and we can only hope for a Blu Ray version. The UK movies are the pride of my Dragonball collection, I own two copies of each of the three movies released here. It's just too bad the rest of the world misses out.Taku128 wrote:The only thing you can expect is the "Big Green" dub to maybe be rereleased on DVD or Blu-Ray.
But anyways, back on topic; the Funimation sets and releases are available to buy on amazon.co.uk. The format plays on our DVD players and it's the same version that was aired here. Just because DVD releases are not available in stores here, doesn't mean it's ''out of bounds'' to us, there are websites and conventions you can purchase DVD's and other Dragonball products from, and just like the rest of the world, if we want Japanese releases, then we have to go to playasia, or other sites.

However I still have the problem of playing a US region blu-ray disc on my Blu-ray player and I don't want to fork out a few hundred to buy an American one. Looks like I'll just have to wait

I'm just hoping the dragonball dvd's are going to be released to play on different region codes like the legendary orange brick boxsets and Lime GT sets.

That's true, I've bought like 4 or 5 DVD players for around £30, and they're all Region Free. They just don't bother encoding them, plus the box will always say Region 2 only, I checked the back of the Region Free DVD Player I've been using for years and there was a Region 2 logo.chibi_goten wrote:Yeah me too, well here's hoping! A cheap DVD player usually does the job though with the old region problem.saiyanprincess wrote:I'm just hoping the dragonball dvd's are going to be released to play on different region codes like the legendary orange brick boxsets and Lime GT sets.
Also, I was given a really nice DVD player a while ago, it's awesome, other then the tray being sticky from some little kid messing with it and a sticker, but after cleaning it up, it was easy to change the code.
I really don't care if we get Dragon Ball in the UK, it's just over here, and anime is looked down upon quite a bit already, if we got an uncut kids series with lots of blood, boobs and dicks it could only get worse.
Some UK Fans I talk to refuse to buy American DVDs even though it's easy as piss, especially Dragon Ball, they're waiting for it to come out here, though these are mostly "OMG ENGLISH DUBS ARE SHIT, THEY RUIN THE IMAGE OF THE ANIME except for Dragon Ball Z, that dub is perfect" fans, so, I don't want them to have it anyway...

And some people in Czech republic believes that UK is Ukraine and every Asian is Chinese + we don't have Dragon Ball here, but Naruto and other anime dubbed by Hungarians to czech language

It's a real double-edged sword that Americans also speak English. On one hand, we can watch/read/listen to everything they can, but on the other hand it means that companies are far less inclined to release things specifically for the UK. I mean, the only game I can think of that actually got localised in the UK is Dragon Quest VIII. All other games are localised in the US and then just switched to PAL for the UK, with US voice acting, spelling and all. Well, the odd other Square Enix game gets the spelling localised at least. In an odd kind of way, we'd probably benefit in this sense if we were considered part of the USA rather than Europe.
It's kind of a surprise that we have an anime industry at all. Considering that the cheapest DVD players tend to be multi-region and that it's easy (and cheap) to import anime DVDs and the fact that the US gets releases way before we do... When it comes down to it, I'd rather be in the UK and have no specific UK releases than be in, say, Russia and get no specific Russian releases - simply because we can just get the US releases and they tend to get things first anyway (in the west, at least). Plus, the dollar's worth about 60p right now so things are pretty cheap.
P.S. Your PC's DVD-ROM drive can be made multi-region easily. There's a program called DVD Region Free (or something similar).

As for sin's original question : http://bluray.liesinc.net/ this site which lists region coding says Dragonball Z: Broly Double Feature is region free. It's just the deadzone one that's locked.

As Teclo said the dollar is pretty weak against the pound so buying things from America is always cheaper. It would probably cost nearly double the amount in the UK to buy the entire series knowing how much they'd inevitably charge per box set.
The only releases I could ever really see in the near future are the movies done properly by someone like Manga Entertainment.
Until then..."Let that child alone!"
As has been mentioned before, at least we get the games. Might I add with Japanese vocal openings. In most cases!
I don't think the USA had them in their openings.
Regarding Funimation releases in the UK last I heard it was done by a company called Revelation.
Anyway I didn't realize there was so many UK fans on here.

Yeah I thought Revelation did a lot of Funimation's DVD releases over here. They released things like Fullmetal Alchemist, and Fruits Basket. I don't see why they can't just license it and release it, instead of Manga Entertainment.Sunlight & City Night wrote:As Teclo said the dollar is pretty weak against the pound so buying things from America is always cheaper.
