Goku vs Vegeta.... SSJ 2 thing

Discussion, generally of an in-universe nature, regarding any aspect of the franchise (including movies, spin-offs, etc.) such as: techniques, character relationships, internal back-history, its universe, and more.

Goku vs Vegeta.... SSJ 2 thing

Post by MCDaveG » Mon Sep 14, 2009 7:56 am

I watched Buu saga with my little brother and I noiced, that at start of the fight when Goku and vegeta are powering up, Goku's hair turned into SSJ2 state..... in next 2 episodes of fight Goku was normal SSJ and then after different scene, Vegeta was talking about, that Goku is much stronger and surpassed Gohan's level at Cell games and is clearly seen that Goku is SSJ2 and there is sparking over Goku and Vegeta's body....

I'm talking about anime and I don't have these volumes of manga so I wanna ask...... It's somewhere shown that Goku and Vegeta are going beyond SSJ state? It's some mistake in anime series? Or they are starting as Super Saiyans and in middle of the fight transforming below but we didn't see it?
because in anime (and I'm watching japanese dub with subs) it's never mentioned about SSJ2 thing, only you see them as SSJ2 right after cut and if you don't know how Goku look like SSJ2 (because I can't state it in Vegeta's example, only because of sparking) you will never notice they are now fighting beyond SSJ level.

:) Yes! They are both SSJ2 for the full lenght of the fight because they transform just before the start of the fight! And that's how they surpassed even Gohan at Cell Game!
They are not mentioned as SSJ2 but only to SSJ that has gone beyond the limit because the SSJ 1-2-3 definition is made by Goku later on...
That is how the things are in the manga but I assume the anime should be the same...

From what I know, it's never easy to figure out the differences between SSJ1 and 2 in the anime because there are very confusing moments...

But I assume that in the anime they fight for a little time as SSJ1 to turn SSJ2 afterwards...

Anyway they have surpassed Cell Game Gohan no matter what, as normal state until SSJ2... But Vegeta did it only by Babidi's magic, because he was stronger than Gohan of Buu's arc but stil under Cell Game Gohan in power...

The fight is a lot shorter in the manga. The anime fleshes it out a lot. However, they do seem to forget to draw them as SSJ2 a lot of the time. In the manga they were SSJ2 for the whole thing.

There are also different teams of animators that work on the episodes, and while they maintain consistency as far as their own work is concerned, they do lack consistency between the teams to quite a degree. That's why their hair in the first picture you posted makes them appear to be Ssj when they were Ssj2 (they are shown with that same style of hair alongside the tell-tale Ssj2 lightning), whereas the second picture more definitively shows them as Ssj2.

This here. The anime screws up SSJ2 all the time.

So it bothered me that long, that I must have downloaded scans of the particular manga volume (this week I'm going to buy all 42 japanese tankoubons anyway) and they are SSJ2 all the time, from begining till he end!

So this is one of the biggest anime screw and indication, that the fight where they were SSJ must be filler, because I never saw that someone will draw different cell for anime of scene directly from manga (If you don't count Saint Seiya and other anime transformed/adapted series).

They do it in the Kid Buu fight too. When Vegeta powers up to fight Buu, he's SSJ2 in the manga, but only SSJ1 in the anime.

You can't necessarily tell the difference between SSJ and SSJ2 (although it's not even called that at this point...) by their hair. The best indication is if their aura has a bunch of electrical arcing in it. But, in the anime even this is neglected sometimes.

I was thinking about this same piece of crap animation and how they will handle it in Kai. Come on! It is freaking stupid they are at SSJ while they should be SSJ2.

Yeah, I wonder if Kai's animators will get to add some lightning bolts where they should be.

The anime are just inconsistent sometimes when it comes to the drawing of Super Saiyan 2s. Goku and Vegeta are Super Saiyan 2 for the whole of the fight in both manga and anime, just that TOEI were too lazy to include lightning and hair altering for some of it. They make the same mistake when Vegeta is fighting Kid Boo in Super Saiyan 2. If Kai doesn't fix it...

I knew they were at SSJ2 the whole time. And I never read the manga at that point. You know why? Because they announced it at the beginning of the fight that they were above or as much as Gohan when he was SSJ2 fighting Cell. Why would you ever think they would power down to Super Saiyan 1 level in the middle of a fight?

I do get confused sometimes though myself. Like in movie 10. I thought Gohan was suppose to be at SSJ level 2 when he was fighting Brolly. And if he wasn't then that doesn't make any sense as to why he wouldn't turn to into that level. Oh well, half of the DBZ movies are bad anyways.

Gohan not turning into Super Saiyan 2 against Broly is the same thing as Gohan not turning into Super Saiyan 2 against Dabura & Majin Boo. Gohan strangely seems reluctant to fight in his strongest form against powerful threats, other than when he's faced with a guy much weaker than himself in a friendly, non-life-threatening tournament battle.
