Have I been pronouncing "Broli" wrong?

Eh....
I pronounce Broli's name "Bro-lee," but before I used to say either way. I just pronounce it how I think it sounds, and people who know how to pronounce things would get annoyed. For instance, I say "NaROOto," "saKOOra," and "aSUka." I don't know, it's just easier for me that way.

But that's the thing.

We're all watching the same damn thing, and presumably in the same language (and in the case of things like Naruto, absolutely watching it in the same language).

LISTEN to the dialogue. Do you HEAR "nuh - ROO - to" ? No. It's absolutely obvious what's being said.

That's not meant to be derogatory specifically towards you, but just a general forehead-slap towards fandom, in general

. It absolutely drives me nuts when people pronounce things wrong like that... if you're such a fan, can't you hear how the Hell they're saying the name(s) in the show you love so much?

Speaking of which, and since I've never seen the anime, how they pronounce Naruto's name? I've pronounced it the same "wrong" way because that's from first impression, but I don't stress the second syllable.

It's pronounced "Nah-roo-to". And the hardest for people to get since it gets clipped is Sasuke's name. It's actually pronounced almost like "Sas-kay", you take out the "u". And as others have already stated, it's "Sah-koo-ra". And it always annoyed me to no end whenever I had to hear Maggie Blue O 'Hara as Tomoyo(Madison), say "Sa-kerr-ra". It's got to be the worst pronunciation I've ever heard. And she's equally as bad as Buruma in the Blue Waters DBZ dub with pronunciations. Yes I managed to get this post back on topic.

Also, when Naruto gets dubbed, I bet it WILL become Nuh-roo-to, much to our dismay. I'm curious as to what they're going to do with names kids will have a harder time with, like Shikamaru, Jiraiya, Orochimaru, etc.

Well.... Steven and Sara aren't that bad. I'm not a nitpicky moron like a lot of people that insist everything has to be exactly the same as the original, I don't mind name changes unless they're retarded. Hence why "Professor Karate" had better be a joke....

Sounds like some of the crap a certain "OMG the sky is falling dubs are t3h eval!!!111" group would spout back in the day. Not to name names or anything, but I'm sure a fair number of you knows who I'm talking about.

But anyway, the far greater danger is that character names will be mispronounced. We've already seen fans mutilate the name of the series / main character (proper pronunciation: "NAH-loo-toh") into something else (incorrect: "nuh-ROO-doh"); I can't even imagine what other awful, awful perversions some of the other names might receive in the mouths of English-speakers.

I can't remember the exact source (Yeah I know, not very crediable) but it was from some website talking about a Naruto video game, and that the names were going to be "americanized". Hopefully it was only a joke; this late into the fandom I don't think it would make sense to so drastically change the names. (Yet then again, Zolo would say the same thing...dun dun DUN!)

Well...it's just easier for me to pronounce things the way I read them, but no one would get offended since I don't really talk about it. And I've never watched the Naruto anime so when I read the manga, I don't consiously think how names are pronounced.
But...if those dub names Deus suggested were true...I get chills just thinking about it.

But it doesn't even matter if it's written, as opposed to spoken. It's Japanese. It's entirely phonetic.

There's only one way to pronounce "Naruto," and it's sure as Hell not "nuh - ROO - do".

It's even *WORSE* if you're watching it (and therefore listening to it spoken every episode!), and STILL getting it wrong

I've been reading the Naruto manga and been calling him "Nah ROO Toe" since the beggining of it, same with One Peice (both in english Shonen Jump) and I've been calling him Luff ee....I know its loo fee phonetically with Japanese now (I've since taken a Japanese class), but its become very hard to break Luff ee pronounciation >.> sort of like how hard it was to stop calling Ryu of SF2 "Rye yuu" instead of the proper "Ree Yuu"

I know what that's like I still pronounce his name "Ry-Yoo" though that's more to me being stubborn for that character. Also everyone I know who plays Street Fighter games call him that and when I once said "Ree-Yoo" to a couple of friends, they were confused until I explained. Though Ryu from SF is the only character with that name that I pronounce it the "gaijin" way. When it comes to Wooden Sword Ryu or Ryu Hayabusa I pronounce their names correctly.

But don't forget too, people are used to the English pronunciations of letters, so just reading it won't always work even if Japanese is a phonetic language. Ya in Japanese the "a" is always pronounced "ah", but not in English. Same with all the other vowels. Watching it yes, then you can hear the correct way to say it, but just reading it, it's easier to mess up, despite phonetics.

Exactly what I was thinking. It's especially easy to mess up if there's an English word in the title with more than one way to pronounce it.
