Pass around some compliments (stop the hate!)
With all of the quarreling this site has over dubs vs subs, I've decided to do some positive reconstruction. Instead of being one of the hundreds of threads criticizing a certain version of the show, this thread is for posting compliments for versions you may not prefer.
Any version can be admitted from any language. And please, no sarcasm posts that are intended to derail the thread. Also, no backhanded compliments for one version that are actually intended to highlight the negative aspects of another. It's time for the DB community to come together.
I'll start. for the Japanese version, Dan Dan Kokoro is an amazing piece of music (especially the instrumental version). Something about it just brings a tone of epicness to the series.
For the ocean dub, I like Nappa and Krillin's voices. That slightly high pitched, wimpy voice fits Krillin pretty well, and something about Nappa's just makes you want to kick his ass but in a good way.
For the funi dub, who can't give props to the SSJ3 theme? Also, in my opinion it has my favorite Goku voice.

While accentuating the positive is a decent approach, nobody should shy away from controversy. If the moderators disagree, then they will shut the discussion down, but I think that more speech is preferable to less. If you're uncomfortable taking part in debate, then don't.

But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

I think it's more than clear what people don't like about various versions of DB, but the truth is that anyone with a close minded mentality that will only accept their own will miss out on any artistic value another might possess. Whether you like the scripts or not, music is music, and voice acting is voice acting. If you limit yourself to only appreciate something because of where it comes from, then you'll never experience anything new.

Hmmm, let's see.
(Funimation) Dub
-Has some good music(especially in the Cell era)
-"Rock the Dragon" is really catchy
-Sometimes I like to just relax and watch DBZ without reading subs, although I have no trouble reading them when I need to.
-I love a lot of the voices: Goku, Mr. Satan, Trunks, heck...I can't even imagine an English Freeza other than the one they have. (But TFS is still greatness )
Sub/Original
- Still great music. Dan Dan is my favorite song of the series and my first introduction to Japanese music.
- I also like a lot of the voices. Although Goku is voiced by a woman...it just seem right when I watch it.
-Closer to the way Toriyama wrote the series.

Where do I begin? Sean Schemmel is amazing as Goku. He just captures his personality perfectly and can switch between serious and light-hearted seamlessly. Also, Stephanie Nadolny go good as Gohan once she started getting used to it, around the Cell saga. Chris Sabat's Piccolo and Vegeta have been consistently good since 2002 or so. And don't get me started on the music.

These types of posts, I would argue, contribute more to any "problem" than the actual conversations taking place.ShadowDude112 wrote:I say before the day ends.johnboy1 wrote:Okay, I'm taking bets on how long this thread will last.
You are not adding anything constructive, you are antagonizing people, and it is absolutely not welcome at all. Please stop these kinds of posts immediately (you may notice, individually, how I tend to delete them if I see them crop up), or you will be subject to further moderation action.
I do agree with this for the most part. Please just remember, everyone, that the world does not revolve around you. You are taking part in a conversation, which means that someone else is on the other side. They are a human being just as much as you, which means they are probably just as stubborn as you are .penguintruth wrote:While accentuating the positive is a decent approach, nobody should shy away from controversy. To post on-topic for myself...
The one biggest compliment I would like to give is to Masako Nozawa for her comment a couple years back about today's seiyuu not actually being interested in genuine acting... or being particularly good at it. Old people represent, yo! Once you hit a certain age, that filter comes right off and you say whatever you want!

Glad you like it, but isn't this to post positive things about the version of the show you don't follow... and aren't you a dub fan?jjgp1112 wrote:Where do I begin? Sean Schemmel is amazing as Goku. Well, anyway, I can do this too. FUNimation usually shies away from silence, but I remember the scene where Trunks and Freeza's men run at each other when the screen cuts to black, and all you see are the sword swipes. I liked the original version's music, but for once FUNimation used silence for that scene, and it actually worked quite a bit better for me.
Schemmel's Goku has grown on me from what little I've heard it in recent years. I think he has a good grasp on the character and genuinely enjoys voicing him, even though he still sounds strained a lot of the time.
And, overall, I liked most of the voices from the Ocean Dub. Ted Cole was amazing as Yamucha. Brian Drummond, while quite a different take on the character of Vegeta, actually worked (although I can see how the really old school fans hated him when he first premiered). Even though Dave Ward's vocal qualities were totally off as Kaio-sama (and served as the inspiration for the absolutely terrible Schemmel version), I enjoyed that voice. Like I said, the voice was off, but at least he captured the humor and intelligence of the character.
That's about all I have right now. Great idea for a thread! I hope we can keep it civil. And, penguintruth, while I agree with you that we shouldn't shy away from the debates, I don't think this is the place for it. If we can bitch about what we don't like about a specific version, isn't it at least a fun challenge to try and do the opposite?

I'm almost inclined to agree with this but replace Freeza with North Kai and Recoome. It's really just the music, script and old acting that got me with the anime.B wrote:I am fond of and/or content with every single FUNimation voice with the exception of Freeza. I was originally a Funi dub fan before coming over to the subbed side of the fandom, so I have a few compliments for that version.
Justin Cook as Raditz- An excellent VA for the role. He doesn't come off as 'generic' to any extent, and in fact, I like him better than the japanese seiyuu. His screamy voice is among the only ones in the dub that doen't come off as particularly annoying.
Some episode titles- Funimation's episode titles are far less spoilerific than thier japanese counterparts. A few were even really good (Case in point: Ghosts of Tomorrow, The Darkest Day, Quicker Than Lightning). Sometimes japanese titles would give away major plot points, making the episode itself largely pointless (The Saiya-jin arc is terrible in this regard).

Interestingly, the dub voices of Freeza never really bothered me too much. Sure, they were no Nakao Ryusei, but they were serviceable. Ehhh, it wasn't really accurate to the character, but when I was 12, I used to bust a gut at, "Having these balls makes me feel something that resembles joy, I think. I want to caress them!"
But then again, I probably shouldn't enjoy that line so much, should I?

I could rain praise on the Pioneer released dub of the first 3 movies, but most of that goes without saying.
My positive remarks on the FUNImation in-house dub:
- Chris Sabat's Vegeta, while not quite what I would shoot for in Vegeta's voice, became one of the best performances of any character by the time the Boo arc was airing.
- Whomever voiced Cooler in Movie 5 and 6 was nearly perfect. I wouldn't even have minded him in the role of Freeza (then my sentiments would resemble what I said above about Chris Sabat, most likely).
- Many of the compositions written by Faulconer for the Boo arc were pretty good.
- Dameon Clark is great as Kanzentai Cell.
- Chuck Huber is perfect as #17.
- Chris Rager is perfect as Mr. Satan.
- While I can't stand Broli, Vic Mognogna did a damn good job playing him.
- Almost every character introduced in the 25th Tenka'ichi Budokai / Boo Arc were spot on, great choices. Videl, Kaioshin, Kibito, Dabura, Bobbidi, the Boo's...
- I like the little musical motif that is used in movies 6-8 every time Goku first transforms into a Super Saiyan.
Trying to think of more. Does it count if I think the actors were at their best and all around enjoyable for the Budokai 3 recording?

Even though I grew up with the FUNimation dub, I almost exclusively watch the anime subbed these days, and I like it much better, as the story and character's motivations make a lot more sense to me now. I also think the original score, as a whole, fits the show a lot better.
Still, I think FUNimation did a great job on some of the more intense scenes. Examples include:
- Android 20 piercing through Yamcha, the music fits the scene perfectly;
- Vegeta's Final Flash (including the buildup).
- Cell's first Kamehameha vs Gohan. Same music as the Yamcha scene, but combined with the awesome delivery of the "Kamehameha" yell... wow
