Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
"I NEED SWEARZ IN MA DBZKAI SO IT CAN BE A COOL DUB ND PPL WILL TAEK IT SRSLY."
Also, there's no need to bring up the subtitled DBZ, seeing how most fansubbers - especially the ones for KAI - don't know how else to translate words like "Kuso" to things other than profanity. Anyone ever seen the official English subbed version of Eyeshield 21? Hiruma Yoichi says "Kuso" ALL THE TIME; he even names people with "Kuso" in the title. But what the subbers did was translate his foul-mouth into softer foul-mouthed insults(Viz translated this in the English manga with a bunch of symbols censoring the word "Fucking"), so "Kuso Chibi('Fuckin' shrimp')" became "Pee-Wee," "Kuso Dread('Fuckin' Dread-head')" became "Damn Rastafarian," etc. etc.
Okay, that's enough about swearing. It's not that much of a big deal but all we know is that it's gonna be in the uncut release. I just want more VA replacements.

Re: Dragonball Kai dub?
Swearing semantics shouldn't even be a problem in the Dragon Ball fan base. They're now going to be in both the subtitles and spoken by the dub actors, so those offended might as well not watch Dragon Ball media.
But anywho, concerning KAI, I can't believe nobody else was able to get any audio from the conventions. You would think we'd have almost 3 full episodes by now!

They probably won't go overboard with swearing and only have "shit" said only once every six episodes or so when it is a fitting time to say it.

Shit also means something. It means the same thing crap, crud, and poop have been used for, just with a more higher level of crudeness.KaiserNeko wrote:I really do want to say, I don't consider Bastard to be considerably up there on the list, considering it's an ACTUAL word for something. It's like Piss or Bitch to me. Shit and Fuck are the top two which I think have no real place in the Kai dub, but apparently Shit is going to be used for some reason. It had it's place in Yu Yu Hakusho, but I'm not so sure in Kai. Honestly, though, hearing Jeice say "The crazy bastard just killed Guldo!" and "Captain Ginyu's gonna be pissed." sounded just right for a couple of intergalactic mercenaries on a mission to KILL a bunch of people. Just saying, even if it is a kids show, there's no reason to be inconsistent.
And I'm sorry, but I have to agree that swear words do denote a certain amount of urgency, peril, and stress. You can't expect someone in a life or death situation to skimp on language. I'm one of the people on this forum who is accustomed to swearing in his daily life. I don't cuss a lot, but I am known to shoot off pretty coarse when I hurt myself or get angry.
Beck Mongolian Chop Squad used it a lot, but that's because it actually fit the setting the flow of the show.Metalwario64 wrote:Has FUNimation ever used that word in any of their dubs?ohaimynameiserik wrote:Doubt we'll get a "fuck" out of anybody.
It fits, dependent on the tone of the scene and the state the character is.
Situationally, it can be used properly, and I think they're showing enough care to get that level of proper use.

Wow didn't a mod tell us to cut this out about 5 posts ago?
Anyway, I'm curious if extras will be reprising their roles too. I really want Guy in Pink Hat's old voice actor to return. He was the best.

Oh, I didn't realize, lol.
Guy in Pink Hat?...*thinks back*
And yeah, some roles, I would love to see come back, while others could do with a fix up. But, most of the problems of the old dub will be fixed with better scripting and voice direction.

Did I make any critical grammatical errors? Or do you mean grammar has something to do with this?

RULE #1: GRAMMAR
You are typing on a message board. You want people to understand what you are saying. Be sure to use proper sentence structure when you write. Also, be sure you are adding in punctuation and spacing where appropriate. The first letter of every sentence is capitalized. Statements end with periods. Questions end with question marks. There is a space in between sentences. Please also put a paragraph break between thoughts. You don't want to look like a fool, and we do not want you to make us look like idiots for allowing you to post that way!
Outlandish disregard for typing properly is subject to being corrected in red by moderators. This is intended to give people a somewhat-snide little "heads-up" that they agreed to these rules and are expected to type properly. Not every little mistake will be corrected (especially those from our foreign, non-native-English-speaking visitors), but if you find yourself subject to these corrections, it may be time to re-evaluate your posting style (a.k.a. "Seriously... you're above the age of ten and live in suburban America; for goodness sake, use a period!").
We have even typed up a special, if you will, "Grammar Primer" that we encourage all present and new members to check out. Following this style-guide will certainly help you fit in around here... not to mention help your over-all writing! Also, we would greatly appreciate it if you would not post in any colors other than the default black. It just looks childish.
As an amusing addition, here is a special image we swiped from Penny Arcade; it should describe our feelings on the matter of Internet writing quite well...!

Though I think any errors that were in my original post were incredibly nit-picky.
The moderator probably just didn't like what I had to say.

A bastard is someone born out of wedlock, ie, most of the cast, in all likelyhood.Gaffer Tape wrote:Sorry, this is hardly important, but it did pique my interest, and I'm quite curious now. Why is "bastard" okay and "bitch" not, when they're basically the same thing? Just wondering.

Yes, I am aware of what a bastard is. I was just wondering why he objected to bitch and not bastard when they're usually treated as pretty much equivalent in the Mohs Scale of Swearing Hardness.

Not that it bothers me, and not that I'm at all concerned as to whether or not the dub of Dragon Ball Kai has any swearing. Like I said, it just roused my curiosity.

Bastard is much easier to not technically be a swear, though. I mean, other than the King of the World, nobody's a son of a bitch.Gaffer Tape wrote:Yes, I am aware of what a bastard is. Yes, and so, especially in that case, since "son of a bitch" is clearly too politically charged to be used.Rocketman wrote:Bastard is much easier to not technically be a swear, though. I mean, other than the King of the World, nobody's a son of a bitch.
You know who else is one, though? Bay. (Bee? However he's referred to around here?) See, two characters...kind of...that's...more than one character...
Aaanyway.

They're all actual words for something.KaiserNeko wrote:I really do want to say, I don't consider Bastard to be considerably up there on the list, considering it's an ACTUAL word for something.
What time it is on the west coast while the show is airing on the east coast doesn't matter. Only live shows ever air at the same time on both coasts. It might be slipping into a 7PM slot in a time zone or two, but that'd be the earliest, because it's only one time zone over that they ever bother dual airing of a show (again, unless live), and that doesn't even always happen.Big Momma wrote:Someone on another forum just brought this to my attention. Even though Kai is set to air at 8PM on Nicktoons, that's for the east coast. This will be airing at 4PM on the West coast. So that probably plays a roll in the censorship.

All of my friends, people I know on the internet and in the local community absolutely don't care about swearing. Different strokes I guess!
Herple-derp I'm kind of done talking about this subject now. It's apparent people who are morally offended by naughty words will be morally offended and people who won't be won't be. If you don't like listening to swearing don't listen to the dub or watch the sub. Start a petition to get all swear words removed from Kai. Reach for the stars.
WHOOPS CANT SHOW THAT IN A CHRISTIAN DRAGONBALL!
Ok, seriously.... What. The. Hell? I mean, are you seriously getting offended that there are people out there who don't think like you do?
Have I taken a survey? Um, no. Have I been alive for the last 25 years, watching TV, hanging around a lot of varied groups of people, being exposed to the internet, and just generally being immersed in American culture at large? Yep. Did I say that everyone everywhere in the country held the exact same opinion as everyone else? Nope. Did I even say that 'general population' even remotely meant the actual majority of the country? Yet again, no.
It's only in more recent years that more swear words are getting by on TV without being bleeped. That doesn't really mean they've moved down on the 'offensiveness' list, quite a few of the non-bleeped words would stir up a shitstorm used in the right places/with the right people. It just means that more people don't care than before. Just because it's not bleeped on TV doesn't mean there aren't plenty of people out there who don't use it, and never would, just as it being bleeped doesn't mean likewise.
And apparently you've never heard of the Cut Cussing Kid.
Also, again, where exactly did I ever say or imply anything about me being 'morally offended' over swearing? It seems to me the only one offended at all is you.
Yep. 'General population' refers to the 'norm' which is, you know, almost never the actual majority of any topic.Big Momma wrote:I'm pretty sure when he put "General Population" in quotes, he didn't literally mean the general population of the entire world.
Anyway, back to the topic now.
We already know about the early changes to the dub cast (and so far I do not like new Bulma at all, and Kid Gohan's still iffy to me) and a lot of people seem to be wondering about Namek-era changes, but what I'm interested in is who's coming back for the Android and Buu eras. If future Trunks, 17, 18, Satan, Videl, or Buu era-Gohan are changed, they just wont be the same anymore.
FUNi seems to have dropped the 'mechanical voice-ness' of 19 a long time ago, so I doubt that'll be coming back for Kai. Though I'm wondering if they'll keep the three distinctly different voices for Cell or go with the same voice like the Japanese version (and thus finally eliminate the 'voice change' issue in the various fighting games)? Also, I hope the keep Goten's voice, but I wouldn't mind Kid Trunks's voice being changed. >.>
And what's the chance we'll get Nadolny back for the Android Saga, or at least the Cell Games?
