No, definitely not. I would never be embarrassed or ashamed that I like Dragon Ball (or Pokemon or pro wrestling or obscure Japanese RPGs or hentai or Space Channel 5 (zomg, I <3 SC5) or making websites), but I would also never argue that it's "for" grown-ups either. It's just something I enjoy.Silver Sinspawn wrote:Whatever you call it, there isn't any shame.

Have you ever asked your mom why your sister can sing along but not you?Kiyza wrote:At home I don't generally get embarassed, but it was awkward when my mother yelled at me for singing along to Cha-La Head-Cha-La, despite the fact my sister was singing along to the theme to Hannah Montana mere moments earlier.
But in public it can be embarassing. Lately I've been carrying around a volume or two of the manga to use as artistic refrence during school, which is where I do most of my drawing, since I can't draw muscular people. I generally try to hide it underneath my other books.

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
No, I've never been embarrassed while watching Dragon Ball. I guess the thing is that I never actually watched DB when I was younger because I didn't have the channel it was on (and back then, I didn't even know about DB). By the time I got into DB fandom, DB was over anyway and I mainly watched DBZ on the internet. But if I had watched DBZ, I don't think I would've been embarrassed. Why the heck should I?
Embarrassed reading Dragon Ball, however...
One time I brought in my Dragon Ball Volume 1 manga in to school, and me and a couple of friends were reading it on the bus. We didn't start from the beginning, just, like, flipping through leisurely. So, expectedly, it was quite awkward when such nudity-related moments as Goku being naked and Bulma's full-on naked body shot came up, and so, because we didn't read it as a story, my friends thought that I was reading porn and, thus, my Dragon Ball manga was forever referred to as "porn books". Well, I'm not embarrassed about it anymore, and I set them straight, but they still joke about it now and then.
2. Why should you be embarrassed about watching a "kids" show? I like a bunch of kids' shows, and I'm not ashamed of it. If people take the piss out of you for watching a kids' show, then they're the kids for ripping someone just for something they like.

1. Yes, Dragon Ball was intended for kids (Japanese kids, albeit), but since then, it has attracted much wider global fanbase of all ages. It's pretty much accepted now as an anime for all ages, because, believe it or not, there are people over 12 who watch the show all over the world.Piccolo Daimaoh wrote:On Topic: Have I ever been embarrassed when someone sees me watching DBZ? I'm never embarrassed watching Dragonball.
The series doesn't start with the arrival of Raditz. Stop being lazy and watch Dragonball.

I'm not embarrassed to be a fan of Dragonball. I'm just embarrassed when associated with the stereotypical Dragonball fan when I'm obviously not. So, people generally know that I like Dragonball, but I don't go out of my way to talk about it openly with most people because most people I know have no interest in Dragonball.

Another thing, it's also for Shōnen (Japanese young men) as well. But those guys seen brief nudity in the manga and anime for God's Sake IMO. I'm not purely 40% sure of this.Piccolo Daimao wrote:1. It's too complicated among female characters (e.g. Videl, Pan, Bulma, Chi-Chi). But it's a nice one.UristtheGreat wrote:The only thing I'm embarassed about is the hentai but yeah, I don't care what other people think of me watching Dragonball.

Everyone I know refers to DBZ as a "kids show" because they watched it as kids and have since grown up and stopped watching it.Piccolo Daimao wrote:

I'm embarrassed because if the people at my school found out I watch a children's cartoon show, I would lose a lot of respect and be mocked for it.Piccolo Daimao wrote: 2. Oh, you think the Grand Tour is your ally, you merely stepped into the Grand Tour. I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn’t see the Super until I was already a man; by then, it was nothing to me but blinding!

I highly doubt people I know are ever going to go on a hardcore DBZ forum and even if one person I know went on these forums, he's not going to know who I really am.Silver Sinspawn wrote:...So what?

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
I am not embarrassed by liking Dragon Ball, in fact I take pride in liking it, because it represents me being myself, and not worrying about what a bunch of scum thinks about me (if they judge me based on what I like, then they mean absolutely nothing to me). I even watch it with my Dad, and we have made it through the first "season" of the original Dragon Ball, and we have watched up until the beginning of the Fusion-arc of Z, and he absolutely loves it. That should say something about the show, and its ability to reach out to people beyond the intended target age group.

I'm not embarrassed because my friends and family aren't giant dicks who would make fun of me for watching a television program every once in awhile out of nostalgia.

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
Only mild embarrassment, like when someone finds me watching Looney Tunes, because they're aimed at a certain demographic. In this case, children. But I watch them anyway, because they're great. Like, one of my male friends went to watch some generic romantic comedy on his own, and he's slightly embarrassed about that even though he liked it. And rightfully so too damn it, bloody awful romcoms.
Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
As far as the whole "children's cartoon" thing goes, I stand by the idea that how embarrassed you should be for watching them is directly related to how seriously you take them.
That's my way of letting otherwise normal people off the hook.

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
Seriously, one could say that being embarrassed and ashamed about it is just as "childish" as what said accusers say watching it is.

Well I have a tv in my room and my laptop on my desk to where I can look at it and the tv at the same time. It's within in reach to where I can type and be in bed.
So, in the chances I've been watching DBZ videos like crazy since summer that pause and mute button has come in handy. So yea, I am in a sense a bit embarrassed. But then again whenever the Saiyaman Saga came up I didn't even want to hear or watch it.

Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
Well, that's the point isn't it? It is quite childish to watch it, and to be embarrassed, so they go hand it hand.Big Momma wrote:Seriously, one could say that being embarrassed and ashamed about it is just as "childish" as what said accusers say watching it is.
Re: Embarrassed watching DBZ?
Well, I wouldn't say it's childish at all to watch it. I watch/read Dragon Ball for a few reasons:Amigo Ten wrote:Well, that's the point isn't it? 1) I love Toriyama's artwork. It is one of, if not the, biggest inspiration in my wanting to become a cartoonist and going to college for art now.
2) I love the story. It's set in a vast, imaginative world where it seems nearly anything can happen. The characters are also very unique.
3) Just a simple nostalgia factor. I grew up with this show, it holds a very special place to me.
From an artistic standpoint(at least mine), Dragon Ball is a masterpiece. Comedy, action, suspense, beautiful artwork, a creative and interesting story, romance, drama, it's got nearly everything. The only reason anyone would be embarrassed by liking this show is because it's a cartoon and it's from a foreign country. If this were the exact same story done in live action for America/UK/Canada/Australia/nearly anywhere but Japan, you wouldn't be embarrassed at all.
What I meant was, I'm assuming there are 2 possibilities with being embarassed.
A) You're worried about family/friends thinking less of you.
B) You're worried about strangers thinking less of you.
"B" should already be out, since, really....why should you care what strangers think? You don't know them. And when it comes to A...everyone has a different family, so I can't really vouch for that. But when it comes to friends...are they really friends worth having if they're gonna insult/think less of you for something like this?
What I'm saying is, sure, some people may think you're childish for watching it....but it's even more childish, and even proves their point, when you're insecure enough to be embarrassed and try to hide it. I'm not saying you have to shout it from the rooftops every time you go out, though.

I think you're taking this too far. What you're describing sounds more like shame than embarrassment.
