Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
Hey guys I was wondering what the differences between the dubs were for the Dragon Boxes and the "Orange Boxes". I just recently started collecting the "Orange Boxes" because they are whats readily available to me (ie. in stores). It seems as, although they claim its the Ultimate Uncut Edition, its not entierly uncut. I only have the first two seasons so I could be wrong but it seems like FUNi edited the script a bit. The characters don't curse as much as they do in the subtitles and I was curious if the Dragon Boxes dub was closer to the subtitles than the "Orange Boxes" are. I don't really have the money to shell out on both sets. Thanks for the help.
Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
It's the exact same dub that was on the Season sets.

When they say "uncut" they're referring to the video.SnowBlindDiety wrote:It seems as, although they claim its the Ultimate Uncut Edition, its not entierly uncut. Judging by your username, it seems as though the Orange Brick's ridiculous brightness is already causing you to go blind! Think about your eyesight and get the Dragon Boxes!SnowBlindDiety wrote:Thanks guys thats really helpful. I guess I wont spend the cash on the Dragon Boxes afterall.

Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
The dubs are the same, however, with the Dragonboxes you are only getting the Japanese music. Personally I love the Japanese score, but this is a big factor if you are a fan of Bruce Falconer.
Though the scripts are the same, the video quality is a lot better on the Dragonboxes. You will notice as you collect more of the season sets that during some scenes the character outlines get choppy and in some cases vanish. Also the brightness is turned up. However, with the Dragonboxes the lines are crisp and the colors look as they were intended.
It all depends on how much of a dub fan you are but I personally would jump on board with the Dragonboxes. However, if you want an accurate script with top notch acting, I'd say get Kai.

Actually, as you buy more and more sets, this becomes less of a problem.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote: Though the scripts are the same, the video quality is a lot better on the Dragonboxes. I know but it's a problem the Dragonboxes don't have at all. Seeing as we are comparing the two it's best to bring it up even though it's brief...jjgp1112 wrote:Actually, as you buy more and more sets, this becomes less of a problem.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote: Though the scripts are the same, the video quality is a lot better on the Dragonboxes. Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
Even though I highly prefer the original Japanese, I can appreciate the dub from time to time on a purely nostalgic basis. However, hearing Faulconer's music is a huge part of that nostalgic experience, so needless to say Funimation's dub sounds a bit awkward and stilted when not carried by his soundtrack.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:The dubs are the same, however, with the Dragonboxes you are only getting the Japanese music. I feel the same way. Without the Faulconer track, the dub really doesn't do much for me.Corporate_Nothing wrote:Even though I highly prefer the original Japanese, I can appreciate the dub from time to time on a purely nostalgic basis. I really think it would've made more sense to have the Faulconer music on the Dragon Boxes instead of the Japanese dub score. Dub fans are attached to Faulconer's score and sub fans are going to stick to the Japanese anyway besides a curious glance.
Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
Except it's been pointed out since before its release that the US Dragon Boxes are NOT intended to cater to the dub crowd that grew up with the show on Toonami. Including the dub score and not the Japanese one on a set that's marketed towards the fanbase of the original would be silly, as would not including the Japanese score.Greenman wrote:I really think it would've made more sense to have the Faulconer music on the Dragon Boxes instead of the Japanese dub score. Plus it keeps things simplistic without cluttering up the discs.

Oh, I definitely realize who they're catering to with the Dragon Boxes. I also realize that there was never any chance of the Faulconer music being the sole dub score.Tsukento wrote:Except it's been pointed out since before its release that the US Dragon Boxes are NOT intended to cater to the dub crowd that grew up with the show on Toonami. I was just pointing out that if you think about it, it could only help them. Most fans of the original wouldn't watch an inaccurate dub anyway, even with the Japanese music. And they certainly wouldn't not buy the Dragon Boxes just because the dub track has Faulconer's music.
On the other hand, there are dub fans (including a couple on this board) who are hesitant to buy the Dragon Boxes because it doesn't have the broadcast music.

Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
I think I agree. While the dub on top of Kikuchi's score is a nice curiosity (one I actually do like), it really isn't winning many people over. While the full broadcast track would have appealed to the dub fans and the full Japanese track would appeal to the Japanese fans, who does the dub+Japanese score appeal to at this stage of the game? There's a lot of water under the bridge and the extra dialogue in the dub track sometimes clashes with Kikuchi's score so that ends up making it less attractive to the whole lot than it could have been. I think FUNi's logic was "Well, we can put an English track on here but we have two options so let's pick the one that's more Japanese" even though it didn't fully satisfy any part of the fanbase.
Perhaps it would have been more prudent to have just kept the Dragon Boxes to 6 episodes per disc instead of squeezing in a 7th. That might have left enough wiggle room to include all three audio tracks with no discernible quality loss. Everybody wins that way and the Orange Bricks would have officially been rendered 100% obsolete. Hm. Maybe that's why FUNi didn't do that.

Not really. The dub with Kikuchi's score will take some time getting used to if you usually watch it with Faulconer's score, but give it some time and you'll see that it actually works.Corporate_Nothing wrote:Even though I highly prefer the original Japanese, I can appreciate the dub from time to time on a purely nostalgic basis. Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
The problem isn't that the dub synonymous with the Faulconer score; it's the fact that the dub was written in such a way where the Kikuchi score has trouble matching with the scene at several points.
It's hard to take the horrifying scene of Kuririn being bucked around on Freeza's horn, on the verge to death, when you have music for said scene but have Freeza voiced by an elderly woman shouting "Yeehaw! Ride 'em cowboy!"

Well yeah, there are some problems here and there with the dub with Kikuchi's score but there's really not that many to actually deter you from watching the show this way.Tsukento wrote:The problem isn't that the dub synonymous with the Faulconer score; it's the fact that the dub was written in such a way where the Kikuchi score has trouble matching with the scene at several points.

But I'd rather go with the original.

Re: Dragon Box Dub Vs. Orange Box Dub
The Ocean dub is the very first English DBZ dub that aired on American T.V in 1996 and was heavily edited. There were DVDs released of the Ocean dub, but they were edited and dub-only.SnowBlindDiety wrote:Hey guys call me a newb but I just thought of something else...what is this Ocean dub I keep reading about on this forum and are there any DVDs with the Ocean dub on them?
