Dragonball Kai (FUNimation English) Dub: General Discussion
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
They used the term "Grand Elder" in the original dub, before eventually switching to "Guru" by the time they met the actual character. We'll have to see.
Also Dende's re-cast may not necassarily have anything to do with her moving, since they use out-of-towners for long-term characters all the time. Sabat expressed a lot of interest in using other actors for characters, even in the case of ones playing multiple characters (Bill Townsley doing Kui, but not both Kui AND Guldo this time, for instance). My guess is Laura will return for Kid Trunks and her other characters later on.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Interestingly, to me at least, the new dub Dende sounds very similar to Aya Hirano's Dende.

On the Grand Elder subject, I never heard it in the original dub..
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Not sure about the old Ocean dub, but when they re-dubbed the Saiyan and Namek episodes, they DID use Grand Elder a lot until they met Guru and then just started calling him that.
Side note, "Guru" KINDA works as a translation for Saichoro-sama, doesn't it? The problem is that so many of the characters have "title names" as opposed to actual regular names, but the dub uses them AS their actual names. Not sure if they'll make the switch to Guru when he's introduced like before, or if they'll stick with Grand Elder all the way.
Also if anyone's forgot, Sean's still doing Nail, but odds are Guru will be given a new actor.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
As I stated in another thread, in the original dub, they referred to him as "The Eldest Namek" in the episodes leading up to his actual appearance.

I hope he can differentiate it from his Goku voice much better this time. Before it sounded like his Super Saiyan 3/4 voice.Kirbopher wrote:Also if anyone's forgot, Sean's still doing Nail

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Well, I never heard his SSJ3/4 voices before, but wouldn't it be the other way around? That they sound like his Nail? I mean, Nail did come years before either of those.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Well, yeah, you do have a point there, but what I was trying to convey is that if you're familiar with the voice he used for SSJ3/4 which is just a deeper version of his Goku, much like what Nozawa does, then his Nail will sound too much like Goku. Since what he does for SSJ3 and 4 is what Nozawa does, then I think it's his Nail that needs to change somehow, as opposed to sounding like a deeper Goku.Gaffer Tape wrote:Well, I never heard his SSJ3/4 voices before, but wouldn't it be the other way around? Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
He mentioned a while back, his new Nail voice is a much deeper portrayerl than his original from way back.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Yet he still felt compelled to do Vegeta, Yamucha, and Piccolo, I can't deny his vastly improved acting, but still...Kirbopher wrote: Sabat expressed a lot of interest in using other actors for characters, even in the case of ones playing multiple characters.
Yay, variety in voices for the win.Kirbopher wrote: but odds are Guru will be given a new actor.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
If I recall, Nail is the only character in DBZ that Sean Schemmel does well.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Yeah I remember how his Nail sounded in the "season 1 and 2" re dub. If his Kai Nail voice is deeper and even better than that, I think the character will be just fine. I'm super stoked for the dubbed Kai version of Goku's and Freeza's fight. Sean's much improved Goku (with hopefully more slang and bad grammar) voice, combined with Chris's Godly Freeza?
It will be literally night and day from the horrid Z dub.

Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Wow, I forgot Brad Jackson played him, so they will need to recast. Maybe Bob Carter?Daimo-Rukiri wrote:We're 20 some episodes away from that but god..it's gonna be awesome!MR.Mark wrote:Yeah I remember how his Nail sounded in the "season 1 and 2" re dub. Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
I think that Cold's first English dub voice was decent actually. It gave off that very snobby, almost rich guy trait that Freeza's family tends to portray, though he did sound a little too much like a wimp I suppose.
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
It wasn't bad, if not a little over-the-top. Of course, the performance isn't being helped with some of the awful lines back then. Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Agreed, I think with the better script and more subtle acting, the old FUNI voice for Cold would work just fine. Wow though, I never realized Jackson was Cold, he did well. His mad voice for Cold was pretty cool , the wimpier snob quality could be downplayed.Cableguy15 wrote:I think that Cold's first English dub voice was decent actually. Since he's gonna be recast, I'm sure they'll get someone good. I still wouldn't mind a similar voice as Jackson's Cold, as above all else it sounded like royalty. I'm not to attached to his Z and Kai Japanese voice, witch was basically "booming Gouri deep guy voice # 103".
Re: Dragonball Kai Dub
Are we even going to get to the Goku vs Freeza fight, or is Nicktoons going to start reruns soon?
